“Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo vs. Dhonveli”
Reviewed September 24, 2011

We went to Maldives with my wife on her recommendation. She visited last year Meeru island. Our primarily goal was snorkeling and diving. Our travel agent booked Dhoveli island. The island was relatively close to Male by speedboat. It took us about 20minutes to get on the island. We got a nice beach bungalow but the view was distorted by plastic bags on the beach. The bags were supposed to hold the sand on the beach. The lacuna had very shallow water so our legs got scratched very soon during initial snorkeling. We discovered very soon that the island is intended for surfers. The waves were big.
We went to reception. The manager of the resort was very cooperative and offered us one of three resorts to switch to without any additional cost. We decided for Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo. We made a good decision. Even though the transport back to Male and from Male to Ellaidhoo by sea boat took us about 3 hours the inconvenience was definitely worth it.
All reception stuff gave us a warm welcome right after we touched the island. We had our beach bungalow within 15 minutes. It was clean, air-conditioned, under palms and pretty distanced from neighbors but only 15meters from the sea. The beach was beautiful. The pictures with white sand are true and not modified :-)
The sea had the right temperature. The water was gradually deeper but after 10 meter we hit the reef. The water was about 20meters deep there. It was no problem for us because we are good swimmers. The most import we found the beauty under the sea surface. All kinds of fish, turtle, shark in all possible colors. We have not seen such beauty. My wife and son decided to see the world deeper so they went to diving school. The stuff in diving school was friendly and professional. Our son became a friend with one member. He took him to night snorkeling. He was impressed with night snorkeling.
We had tennis rackets with us and we used them every day. The hard court was in the middle of the island and it was in good shape. The best time to play is before sunset. You get sweat but the dinner tastes better. If you do not play tennis you burn the calories in very nicely equipped fitness center.
We had all inclusive package which covered all our needs except the espresso coffee. We love good coffee so it was worth for us pay extra for the Illy. The food was excellent and healthy with variety of choices. The good news for us: We did not gain any kilogram :-) However if you expect thousand different dishes you should opt for some 5 star all inclusive resort in Turkey.
The stuff in resort was friendly. We felt that they really cared about us. Their smile improved our mood daily. I celebrated birth date on the island. It was the most romantic birth date present from my wife. The dinner on the beach surrounded by candles, next to a big fire with excellent food stays in my memory till end of my life.
To summarize, we found exactly what we were looking for: privacy, a beatiful beach and underwater world and sport activities.

Room Tip: take single beach bungallow. The water bungalows are semidetached. So your neigbor might not be exca...

We had such a fantastic time at Ellaidhoo last year that we decided to return this year for 2 weeks. It is a testament to this place that we decided to do a repeat visit because we never visit the same place twice. We thought however, why try out somewhere else when Ellaidhoo had everything we wanted!

After taking the speed boat last year we upgraded to the sea plane. If the sea is calm the speed boat is fantastic, and sometimes, I have heard dolphins even follow you! Sadly last year we had a rough journey and one poor lady didn't have a great start to her holiday by throwing up right infront of us! The sea plane was a great option but didn't get you there any quicker as we had to wait 3 hours to board the plane so either choice is a good one.

Arriving on the island is fantastic because you are greated by lots of friendly faces, many of whom we recognised and instantly we were remembered and welcomed like royalty! Our great friends Prem and Donald can't do enough for you and ensured we were spoilt rotten throughout the entire trip - I hope we repayed our gratitude by the occasional sing song in the bar?!

It was our first visit to the spa this year and we purchased a package for 10 hours of treatments for $500 - just book yourself a balinese massage for an hour and you will understand why we booked more! If you enjoy the occasional game of tennis, the court there is pretty good and you can loan some racquets and a ball boy to stop you sweating too much. Seems the fruit bats like to hang out around there too so bring the camera!

The snorkelling around the reef on the island is outstanding. There are numerous sting rays (which are feed nighly at around 5.45pm at the main bar) and a resident turtle who we spotted 3 times outside of the main bar so keep your eyes open! You will see numerous reef sharks, moray eels, trigger fish and other wonderful fish. There are warning signs for the titan trigger fish but they were not a problem - just ensure you swim in a large circle around them and they will leave you alone. It's sometimes a shame to see people walking around in the lagoon and damaging the coral but we see this everywhere sadly - just something to bear in mind when you visit if you are not a diver/snorkeller.

The main bar is where it's happening in the evenings - crab racing and bingo night to mention a few - both worth having a go. You might need a few drinks to warm you up to dance the crab dance with Donald however if you win the race! lol! The pool bar is a quieter area to hang out and has a different atmosphere which offers a good mix. We loved all of the staff in the bars and it amazed us that they recognised us as return visitors - shows how personable they are. Look after Dillippe, Nallan, Chinta, Gamini, Hussain, Sidath when you visit they are very attentive and such good fun! They are already truly missed.

The food at Ellaidhoo is stunning! If you stay in the water bungalows you will eat in the pool restaurant but everyone else eats at the other restaurant by the main bar. The food and waiters in both areas are outstanding. You will be amazed by the quality of the food, the ability of the staff to smile and seem so happy working behind the heat of the cookers, and the range of food on offer! The curry's are awesome (particularly the Dhal curry) and the selection of food changes each day to ensure you don't get bored of the selection - outstanding! Special mention must go out to Harris and Ali who gave us something to look forward to each time we went to the restaurant.

The accommodation on the island is great and we have now stayed in the superior rooms, beach bunglows and water bungalows. The superior apartments are very spacious, beach bungalows enjoy the sea views and the privacy and the water bungalows take your breath away! All have bathrooms with a part open roof which is an experience to get used to but it soon becomes the norm and it feels quite exhilarating! The water bungalows have a great layout with a private balcony over the sea, a huge bath, separate shower and toilet, 2 sinks and excellent storage. You are welcomed each night to special detailing on your bed sheets to welcome you back from the bar. The attention to detail, not just in the rooms but also the special attention paid even to your napkin at the dinner table, is obvious.

To sum up this island, we would say it's personable, fun, paradise, relaxing and a second home. From the moment you arrive you are encouraged to kick of your shoes (btw forget them they are not needed for your entire stay!) and treat the island like your home and in no time the staff and the other guests become like your family. Wow you guys are missed already - we will be back! Thanks again for making our holiday so fantastic!

this is how you feel within a few days of arriving on this lovely island and all of it is down to the amazing staff and management, all the staff care and actually take the time to find out your opinions. My girlfriend and i stayed in the water bungalows and were treated to a picturesque view down the beach and out to sea. We had some fantastic reef sharks for company every morning and a host of other amazing looking fish that you could watch for hours. Everyone has opinions and i had read so many reviews before i left i could have recited them off by heart. This is our second holiday in the maldives and isnt cheap so i wanted to know that it was going to be money well spent, and it really was. Spotlessly clean bungalow every day, a pool area that was managed from 8 in the morning, your lounger/bed was made up for you with your towel and parasol while you had a breakfast in the poolside restaurant, lovely clean pool and surrounding area a great place to do absolutely nothing, sometimes it was difficult just to read as it was so relaxing. This is what i wanted and exactly what i got and a big thank you must go to the ever efficient pool guy. I must say the place that we loved and took advantage of was the spa, as soon as you enter the spa and meet the girls you instantly relax so it does exactly what it says on the tin. We had the 10hrs split between us and had joint treatments as well as on our own, we went for different treatments and im positive i had the best, for me it was 5 hrs of pure bliss. So like everyone has commented the place is brilliant, the food was good the staff were excellent and i loved every minute of my time.

Go to this island and empty your suitcase, empty your head of the rat race we live in, relax in your surroundings and enjoy. Dont moan for the sake of moaning as im sure that many of the people who have reviewed here have done.

Let Prem and his team take care of you, you wont be disappointed.

I was excited to go back to the Maldives and sad to leave.

Thanks to everyone on the island who made our holiday so fantastic and make sure you treat the staff as they treat you.

Room Tip: 4th bungalow on the left, low number 416 i think gives the best view morning, noon and night.

My wife and I visited the island last year and I added a review on TA. At that time I thought that holiday couldn't be bettered. I was wrong!

This island resort is quite literally paradise. The GM Prem has brought a culture of 'adding that little touch' to the service and this allows all the stafff to be as helpful as they obviously want to be; At every turn there is a smiling face ready to do whatever you ask.

As a repeat customer we were remenbered by one and all and I thought treated as royalty and chatting to others during our stay it is obvious that Prem had spoken to everybody and where possible offered an upgrade of accomodation or anything else to make the stay more enjoyable.

The stay we had started by being greeted by the senior management team on the jetty (and they were all there again to wave us off) and then being shown our room. We stayed in one of the water bungalows with an open view of the sea and distant islands but nothing else! Beautiful ever changing view where we saw turtles and dolphins swimming past at reasonably close range whilst beneath us were some of the most colourful fish and even baby sharks.

The rooms have everything you want plus a bit! On our last visit we stayed in a garden room and then a beach bungalow and all these had a good standard and were very comfortable and would be heard to fault.

Prem is a keen gardener and this shows as the grounds and gardens around the resort are beautifully kept and the paths etc are swept continually so it perfectly feasible to walk barefoot throughout your stay on the island.

We ate at the restaurant allocated to the water bungalow guests. Having been in the main restaurant last year I can say that there is no major diffrence in the food with good quality service at both. Indeed some guests changed their preference of restaurant with a few wb customers eating in the main restaurant and vice versa. Space is limited in the wb restaurant so this may not always be possible but if it can be done it will be done. That's how the resort works! Food is international and there is something for all tastes/nationalities

Now add to that one of the best house reefs I have seen where I have swum with a huge variety of sealife including small sharks, turtles, and large stingrays whilst simply snorkelling on the house reef. I don't dive but there is a well equpped and managed dive school on the island. I have only ever heard good things about the school.

But what made the holiday for me was the staff. Everyone of them made me feel that this was my home and they shared in our holiday with us. When we saw something new when we were snorkelling they were eager to hear about our day and what we had seen. Highly attentive without being obtrusive I couln't have been happier with them.

For me (and my wife) this is as close to paradise as I am likely to get and the star rating belies the truth here. Sevice here is at least 5 star and hopefully there is no intention to refurbish the island and take it beyond the means of 'ordinary' people like us.

Love it all and am looking forward to returning for more as soon as I can. I really can't do justice to the resort with just words but I hope I've given an indication.

We returned home from Chaya Reef on 5th September (a week ago) after spending the best 2 weeks holiday we’ve ever had. Our holiday was perfect in every way apart from the flight home, but that’s another story. This holiday was meant to be my ‘one off never to be repeated holiday of a lifetime’ but having experienced Chaya Reef I definitely have to go back there.

We absolutely loved this island and the people on it and I really can’t find enough good words to describe them. The staff were so warm and welcoming from the second we stepped on the island and they greeted us with cheerful smiles everywhere we went. Nothing was too much trouble for them. I felt that all the staff were very professional in the way that they dealt with us, they work as a team and they are an absolute credit to the manager (Prem). The staff are what make this island extra special in my opinion and we felt very much at home at Chaya Reef because of their efforts. Other holidaymakers that we met felt the same, for instance one lady I spoke to during our stay said that she had been to 7 islands, but the staff at Chaya Reef were the friendliest she had seen.

Everything people say on here is true. We took the sea plane to get to the island - a fantastic experience and worth the extra. We went all inclusive and there is plenty of choice for meals - we all loved the food, especially the fish. We stayed at the beach bungalows (lovely) and the water bungalows (fantastic). All accommodation is very clean, well equipped and the beds are comfortable. The bars, spa, gym & all amenities are top notch. We just couldn’t fault a thing. The beach and grounds are well kept and the ground staff work hard to maintain them that way. Snorkelling is fantastic and I just have to give a special mention to the fruit bats that fly round in the day – we loved them.

Yes there are mosquitoes but they sprayed every day when we were there and staff are working very hard to get rid of them. I get bitten a lot anyway (in my own garden) so I took lots of jungle formula and bite cream. It’s not a problem if you have the right stuff and the mosquitoes seem to leave you alone after a few days anyway.

Absolute respect goes to Prem and Donald for looking after us so well and also to the bar staff – Dilleep, Gaminee, Sidaf, Nishanta, Chinta, Sadam and the other guys. They are all genuine, lovely people and I’m very sorry that I can’t remember all of their names. I have no doubt spelt names wrong though – sorry about that. Our waiters were Ali, Shafil and Harris – again all top, friendly people and they looked after us so well. Thanks also to the pool man who is always calm, helpful and cheerful and to the room boys who kept us clean and tidy and made the most delightful patterns with the sheets in the evening, especially on my birthday. All the efforts that people made to make our stay memorable we very much appreciated and I have to say a special thank you to the lady who looked after me on the boat when we arrived on the sea plane. She was very sensitive and most understanding.

In case you haven’t guessed by now - I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Chaya Reef to anyone. It's a great place for a memorable holiday.

From the moment we stepped on to the island we were treated like royalty. We were handed cool face clothes and a cool watermelon drink, these were very welcoming after a very long and warm journey.

We were taken to our rooms and our cases were already there. The rooms were lovely, we received a plate of fruit and a message/banner on the bed saying "happy wedded life". It was very sweet, although we never got around to eating the fruit as we were all inclusive and didn't need anything else. The air conditioning is good, definatley needed through the night. Ours broke one night at 3am and was fixed within 30 minutes after a call to reception who sent out an engineer. Very efficient!

The island was always kept very clean and tidy, becasue we went during monsoon season, the ladies are out every morning sweeping the beaches and paths, and themaintenece staff are also looking after the grounds.

As it was our honeymoon, we decided to share 5 hours of treatments between the two of us. I had a facial and hair wrap, and we each had a 30 minute stress free back massage and a balinese body massage. All of which were lovely and very relaxing. I think I fell asleep through the hair wrap :) The ladies in the spa are very professional and brilliant. The spa is not cheap, but extremely pleasant.

No currency is required really. We went all inclusive, and it was brilliant. The trips and excursions are booked to your room, so minimal money is needed. Small denominations of dollars are good for giving tips to the barmen/waiters/pool guy/room cleaners.

The all inclusive option on this island was second to none. We were in the beach villas so we ate at the main restaurant. There were multiple chefs who cooked straight to order. Breakfast, has croissants/danishes/fruit/yogurts/curry(if you want!) but there is an egg Chef who makes fried eggs or omlettes to order, also a pancake/waffle chef too. Lunch and dinner always had loads of choices but there was usually something for everyone. Fish, battered something, curries, fruit/pudding, pasta chef - Simon, plus chicken/lamb/beef options. All food was incredible!!

Drinks were good as well, in fact this is the biggest daily decision we had to make whilst staying here. The barmen at both bars were very helpful and we loved the laid back uniforms, it was nice not to see a pair of black trousers or white shirt as this is seen at home. I liked the white shorts and different t-shirt depending on the job. Chintaga at the bottom bar has incredible english and a good sense of humour. The guys at the pool bar made our holiday, Sidath and Gamini were fantastic, they brought our drinks to our sunbeds and made fantastic drinks and cocktails. You could get drunk on a daily basis but the need just wasn't there. We enjoyed our 5-7 by the pool with cocktails/gin and Tonics. Really fun times!!

Haris the waiter was fantastic, he always knew what drinks we were going to want depending on the meal, plates were cleared efficiently and drinks were replenished when needed.

Dulah -the pool attendant was fantastic. If you leave your towel (blue from your room) on the sunbed, he will put out a mat and lay the towel out with a green one for your feet, very pleasant. He is funny though about umbrellas and if your knots are unsightly he will re-do them, it's all in good faith though. Brilliant guy, and a good sense of humour.

The serve breakfast 7:30-9:30. lumch 12:30-2:30 and dinner 7:30-9:30. Snacks were also available at 10:30 and were sandwiches and chips for those who missed breakfast or who were hungary. A further snack was availabe at 4pm - usually samosas/cake, mini burgers, loads of things, we never went hungary.

At the bottom bar near the main restaurant, is a bar which has a little pool which they light up in the evenings. This is brilliant to sit an look at, as little sharks, stringrays, and other fish are all seen here in the night. Brilliant.

The only bad thing about this island are the mosquitos. They are out all day and night, we took anthisan out with, I had it on me 24/7. Suncream and then jungle spray is prob best idea but we only used that in the evening. A good bite cream is essential. There aren't really any other bugs that we saw, and I saw no spiders!!! There were little geckos every where but they run away.

Shoes really are not necessary. We took flipflops, but rarely wore them. We walked most places in bare feet.

We went 3-17th August and the weather was perfect on most days. There were a couple when we had rain, but it usually went as quickly as it came!! It was lovely and warm. You can burn through the sun umbrellas if no suncream is worn.

At the bar at the bottom, hey do crab racing and bingo. I won't spoil it, but it is worth a go. We had a great time and did the crab racing twice. Very funny!!
meals on beach snacks,

We did only a few excursions as they weren't really necessary. We had a meal on the beach. This was a lot of money, but so tasty and a lovely experience as newly weds. The fillet steak was absolutely perfect, I think a seafood platter was the other option. We also had a meal done for us on the beach with 2 other couples as we were leaving the next day. They really looked after us and again as always the food was beautiful. We did the night excursion which goes out about 10pm on a boat about 30-50 meters from the shore and they throw in the fish scraps and so many sizeable sharks appear. Its on $15 (£10) but it's really good!!

We went on a guided tour on the first day with Amjay, one of the diving instructors around the house reef. We saw a turtle - absolutely incredible and so many fish. I was amazed!! We also did a night snorkel, this showed us many different things, the crustaceans come out at night and the coral is a brighter colour. All done by torchlight, an incredible experience. Alot do dive, bit I don't think you see anymore, having spoken to those who did both. The reef is located just outside the walls, which is safe and an amazing place to be!

Adapters are placed in the rooms, antihistamines are a must.

An absolute paradise, we had an amazing time and met some brilliant people. Thanks to everyone who made it great for us.

Room Tip: We were in room 307, which had great access to the beach and was quiet!!

From the minute you step onto the island you feel welcome here. A line of 12 or so staff were waiting to welcome us and they do the same on departure - a nice touch.
The island itself has everything most people will need for a relaxing holiday. Everything is well organised and clean. Most other resorts have one or two negatives but in Ellaidhoo everything seems good or excellent. They really have made an effort to overcome any issues that the guests find.

There are no shortage of staff to look after you and you rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for anything. What's more, the service is always delivered with a smile - nothing was too much trouble and we made genuine friendships with the staff. Special thanks go to the bar staff, who were all very attentive, especially Nishanka and Dileep, who were superb and made us feel very special.
Our waiter in the restaurant, Ali, has a great sense of humour and went out of his way to make sure we were looked after. The food was also excellent, with a wide variety at each meal, much of it cooked individually for you. Only die-hard "chips with everything" people would be disappointed. It is especially good if you like spicy food but there is also a great choice of pasta (individually cooked by Simon with a smile!) and salads. The restaurant staff were always friendly and helpful - especially Alam and Simon.

We were a group of 3 generations (23, mid 50s and late 70s) and we all enjoyed it tremendously and would recommend it to anyone in this age band.
We opted for the transfer by boat, which we were uncertain about as it is a 90 minute trip, but it went very smoothly and we were welcomed on board with cold towels and water. We saw dolphins, which was a treat. We've used the seaplane on previous trips to another island and, whilst they are fun and quicker, they seem more prone to delays at the airport.

The snorkelling is excellent and there is a good range for all swimmers. Stronger swimmers can reach the more exciting fish/coral. Many people went scuba diving and the Dive Centre seems very well equipped. There is a wide range of fish, including reef sharks, turtles, rays and many small to very large fish. The main beach is beautiful with easy access to the reef.

Don't be put off by the August weather - whilst it does rain, it rarely does for long and sometimes nice to have a break from the sun. As it is off-season, the resort was only about 40% occupancy, which was great as there was no problem finding space on the beach.
The resort is well managed and all staff seem to enjoy their work. Prem, the General Manager, spends a lot of his time with the guests so he is able to ensure that they all have a good time. We did have a minor issue with our room, which was resolved quickly with many thanks to Aileen. Prem offered to upgrade us to the Water Villas, which we turned down as we were very happy with the beach bungalows - we later came to regret this decision when we had a tour around the Water Villas - they are beautifully set out and furnished and don't come with all the valet service extras you get at other resorts, which we find "over the top". This must be the best resort in its class.

Many thanks to Prem and your wonderful staff for making it such an enjoyable holiday - we'll be back!
