I think we were lucky that the weather on the island was wet and windy all day, as it kept the numbers of tourists down. We got there early and claimed a great seat close to the front right next to one of the main paths.
Our patience paid off and we saw excellent numbers of adorable penguins make their way up the beach. Once done at the beach, we were able to slowly make our way up the boardwalks where we saw literally hundreds of penguins socialising, playing, feeding their chicks or just waddling up the numerous paths.
Our kids were delighted and it was an amazing experience.
I have to commend the friendly, informative, helpful and EXTREMELY patient rangers who had a huge job in keeping us informed whilst also dealing with some rude and ignorant tourists.
As I said, we were lucky, so was definitely a 5 star experience for us!!

The Penguin parade was a once in a lifetime experience. We booked in advance and glad we did. It fills up quickly. Especially for the VIP tour we did. It afforded us entry to the tower where they start the nightly count. As well as underground viewing. Escorted by a ranger who was very informative. The penguins are adorable. Tons of stuff to buy in the shops. Their new facilities are quite impressive.

This is the second time I've seen the penguins as an adult, and it was (again) magical.
We opted for 'Penguins Plus', which is the seating to the far right as you look at the beach and the area where most penguins arrive. On a night like ours (23 degrees C, low tide) there were over a 1000 penguins, and I'm sure the view was great even in the general admission, which is very reasonably priced.
As we arrived lots of chicks were already out of their burrows waiting for their parents to arrive and feed them, very cute, and we also saw wallabies.
The actual penguins arriving then waddling up the beach tracks was mesmerising - we watched them for well over an hour.
There is also a good espresso cart! Absolutely loved the whole evening.

It was a delight evening to witness so many tiny penguins arriving on the beach and parading up the dunes from the Skybox then in an up close underground room! Highly recommended!

Recently returned from the penguin parade and was an amazing experience. There are not many things in nature that reliably occur every night but this is one of them. Teenage kids thought that it was going to be boring but they truly enjoyed it and was well worth the trip from Melbourne. Definitely recommend the upgraded viewing platform as I doubt you would be able to see much from the general admission stands.
