Probably we were unlucky the evening we went, but there were fewer penguins than usual, according to the rangers. We sat in the cold, the view of the sunset was beautiful, but there were almost no penguins coming to the shore. We were able to spot some in the bush on the way back to the visitor centre, but the experience itself is not worth the price.

We went to the Penguin Parade on a Sunday evening during the Melbourne Cup long weekend. We rang up and were told we could book online (which we did) and that the ideal time to turn up was 7pm. We pulled up into carpark just before 7pm and found a spot quickly but it was filling up fast as they are currently doing a lot of building work and creating a new visitors centre. It was quick to get in and we made our way straight to the viewing area. By 7.30pm it is almost full. It was a high tide so it was quite hard to see the little penguins came in and we had more luck when we went to the board walks and saw many groups of penguins walking to their burrows.

Be aware if you go to the penguin parade you cannot take photos or videos of the penguins on a phone or camera regardless of whether you are using flash or not. Everyone was told this multiple times in different languages and yet as soon as the penguins came out people ignored the rangers requests. It was very disappointing to see people put their own wants above the safety of these beautiful creatures. So please if you are visiting don't take photos!

Other advice - wrap up warm. Even though the day had been warm the temperature dropped once the sun went down. Bring a warm coat, scarf, hat and gloves.

Ok. So you pay at the turist center in town. You go down to the penguin area. And this is a stadium. With buses and tons of people coming that for a second I thought we are going to see some sort of sports show. The entire place is filled with small penguin stores designed to make you spend money(it goes to the penguins. So fine)you walk to the terrace. And the lady tells everyone in English and in Chinese NOT TO TAKE PICTURES AND NOT STAND UP when the penguins arrive. And what do you know. Once the tiny creatures appear. The cameras start clicking and the people start to stand and try to get a better view.
The ideas behind this place is wonderful. To execution. Not so much. They should either decrease the amount of people going in. Or at least. Place some big screens that show the penguins on shore. Could also help the weak eyed people to see them come to shore in the darkness.

Pay the extra to get the best seats in the first seating area. We were only 30 cms from these beautiful creatures. Watching mother nature and her tiny penguins was a highlight of our holiday.

Its pretty windy in the evening there, we went there early to occupy a good seat expecting good view of penguins swim back from oceans. I have come here before 2 years ago, but this time i did not see as many penguins as last time.
Tips: you wont be able to see large group of penguins walking along the beach, just wait along the walkway you will be able to have close encounter with them while they slowly walk back to their "nest", mostly handmade boxes for them.
