A group of us stayed here while we toured the Hague. Our rooms were fresh, spotlessly clean and newly furnished. The beds were really comfortable. We had a good balcony with comfortable furniture on it. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and there was plenty of hot water whenever we wanted it. The service was friendly, kind and helpful. Breakfast was very good with a wide ranging choice of fresh hot and cold foods.

We would definitely stay at Hotel City again and we have recommended it to friends.

The horror stories we read on the internet bore no relation to the hotel and service we experienced. We think it is very good value for money.

After the horror stories on the Internet and friends who stayed here before my expectations were very low. However, it was not too bad at all. Check in was fine. Stairs a bit steep and rooms are ok. Shower could be bigger and get some modern tiles. Breakfast was ok, overall pleasant and if management keeps it up like this I would return.

Well i have to say something for them by reading all these old comments, this City Hotel is definitely recommended as they seem having a new management now. Its a new furnished hotel with a new name called "New City Hotel"..
I had two nights staying in a double bed room there with my boyfriend about a month ago. everything is new, fresh and clean with sufficient lights in the room. we both felt comfortable and peaceful ,and their staffs are absolutely friendly. Thanks to them for all the service and help. Absolutely going back when we are visiting the beach soon! :)

After reading the other reviews on this hotel, the hotel actually went up in my estimation, all I can say is that if you like bugs that is bed bugs, book in there and take them home with you and maybe just maybe after four months with them at your home and spending lots of money trying to get rid of them you may finally forget the place, I will never forget it

Room Tip: cardboard box with no lid with holes is better

I am travelling quite a bit but THAT place was actually the worst I have experienced. 75 € for a double room- the room was dirty, stains all over the carpet, curtains full of stains; room was under the roof- someone tried to paint water stains over- some kind of white whishy washy all over the ceiling and the walls. beds STILL stable even though wooden cover peels off, table full of stains, shower was NOT clean - i found hair in it from the guest before; carpet on the floors again full of stains; breakfast? what breakfast- ONE kind of sausage, ONE kind of cheese, table cloth -> dirty and not ironed; carpet- guess what- full of stains; the gentleman who did the service-> very unfriendly and not attentive at all. CONCLUSION-> definitely NOT worth the money; a hole

This weekend my family and i stayed at the City Hotel, Sheveningen, the stay at this hotel went from bad to worse, through out the course of the week-end.

Firstly we were greeted by a man in his pyjamas at check in, which i consider to be extremely unprofessional, this man then quoted us a different price to what had previously been arranged in the reservation and demanded we paid upfront, he then was unable to work the chip and pin machine and made us try 3 cards till finally we told him we would find and ATM and pay in cash.

Having reached the room we found that there were many faults with it, i.e. the bed side lamp did not work, the window would not close, the wardrobe would not close and of course the worse part, was the shower did not have anything but a torn shower curtain to stop the water from spilling out all over the bathroom (they also did not provide us with soap).

After a 10 hour coach trip you would have a expected the staff to show a little bit of common courtesy and at least leave it till after mid day before calling our room to remind us about paying the bill, but no, the staff at the hotel thought it would be acceptable to do this after 2 hours.

On the final day whilst packing our bag we found that there where two items missing from our room. Upon confronting the receptionist she informed me that one of the items had been removed from our room whilst they were changing the light bulb as it was said to be dangerous, this item just happened to be the case for our international adaptor, what could be dangerous about this. My handsfree kit for my mobile phone was also removed from the room but never recovered, which meant the local police had to informed.

Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a single traveller on a budget...

Back where I come from, in the land of hills and sensible footwear, we have these little things called "fire regulations". Now, either similar legal requirements haven't quite reached this part of Scheveningen yet, or else the Chinese owners of the City Hotel are running their business oblivious to the need to provide such things as evacuation plans in every room, an emergency number on the telephone and multiple, well-signed escape routes.

And it's not just fire safety that seems to be lacking here: the poorly lit steep staircases with no banisters up one side, the boiling hot unlagged radiator pipes running at convenient touching height through the cramped room, the keycard with the room number printed right next to the hotel's name and address, etc. You get the idea.

Now, the "basic single" room here really does take the concept of "bijou" to new limits. Measuring just 2.5m x 2m (9ft x 6ft), there's barely enough room for the bed, wardrobe, table and sink, let alone space left to stow a suitcase or - heaven forbid - walk around in. This is a room nothing like the spacious, comfortable single person's offering portrayed in the hotel's advertising.

Then there's the decor - it's like something out of the 1960s, except it hasn't really been touched at all since then. The uneven floorboards, broken wardrobe, Ikea table covered in cigarette burns, rusty radiator and paper-thin curtains all point towards the need for a thorough refurbishment and a lot of tender loving care. Talking of cigarette burns, it's clear from the stained wallpaper and browned ceilings that either the taped-on "No Smoking" sign is being ignored, or else those cans of paint haven't seen the light of day since 1960 too.

But, for one or two nights, this place will probably suffice you. There is one miniscule (but thankfully modern) bathroom between 2-4 bedrooms, clean linen/towels and a location within easy reach of the beach and transport links into Den Haag. There's free WiFi throughout the hotel, and breakfast in the morning - aside from the foul-tasting and ridiculously over-brewed coffee - was not totally inedible.

If the price really does compel you to stay here, here's some practical advice to finish:

• Firstly, people of a larger build should just book a double room with en-suite facilities. At least you won't struggle to walk around your shoe-box or to sit down with the lack of legroom on the shared toilet.

• Note that the breakfast room and reception are located 100m down the road in a separate building - useful to know when you run out of toilet paper. The hotel restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, but if the cooking is of as good a quality as the accommodation...

• Finally and most importantly, pack a bar of soap in your luggage - your hands won't regret it.
