“Great value for your money for a weekend getaway.”
Reviewed December 4, 2011

A very functional hotel with great location right in the middle of the city, nice interior "colonial" like design, spacious and clean room, good price. The staff are very nice and the rooms all have balconies. Breakfast buffet consists of mostly local dishes but they also have an eggs station where you can ask them to cook your egg. The pool is quite small but ok. Location wise is not close to the pretty beaches but it is very close to restaurants and shops. There are lots of new hotels under construction in Belitung with modern touch but Billiton has preserved the colonial style and a historic "toapekong" chinese pray hall dated from 1800. So it definitely has its unique charm.

Stayed at the hotel in May 2011 for 3 nights.
Took Batavia Air from Jakarta (3.5hr delay!) to Tanjung Pandan on a Boeing 737-300 (660k IDR return). Met by driver (350k IDR/day) at airport and transfer to Billiton Hotel.
The Hotel is a very clean, efficient & well run place in the small capital of the Island. Check-in was smooth & friendly, key card for the door, air-con, TV (no BBC but there is Channel News Asia in english from Singapore to catch up on), telephone, wi-fi, plenty of space for bags, nice powerful shower to wash off all the sand when you get back from the beach. Remember electrical plugs in Indonesia are 2 pin, so bring an adaptor if needed.
Buffet breakfast with good selection of western & local dishes. They don't put too much food out so as not to waste, but you can always ask for more if something has run out. Eggs cooked to order.
The hotel has a large ballroom for weddings/functions - on the right of the ballroom, behind the curtain, if the oldest Chinese shrine on the island.
Outside the hotel is the centre of town - a department store, supermarket, the only air-con restaurant we saw (KFC), plenty of warungs (small shops selling cooked food), banks (air-con). Local market by the port is 5 minute walk from the hotel - road opposite the hotel. Alternatively, turn right out of the hotel & follow the road and you come to another beach area with open air restaurants & small tourist type shops (though postcards don't exist). Remember to change money in Jakarta as i tried 4 different banks on the island and none took GBP - Bank Mandari took USD or SGD, but don't bank on it! ATM's at the bank branches.
Fantastic beach at Tanjung Tinggi (location of the Lor-in villas) in the north of the island - about 30 min drive from the Hotel Billiton, and Lengkeus Island with the lighthouse is definitely a great day out (take snacks and drinks/cool box). We hired a fisherman with a speedboat for 300k IDR for 6hrs at Kelayang beach. He also works for belitung adventures (www.belitungadventures.com).
We loved our visit to Belitung Island and Hotel Billiton is a great place to stay. Everywhere, there is road building/widening going on, new hotels being built (no big chains/resorts like Bali yet) - visit the Island before it's discovered. Can't wait to go back.

PS - take lot's of insect repellent and sun screen - sand flies will bite you and mosquito's love tourists, but don't be put off.

TA has this hotel listed as in Sumatra province however Belitung Island is about a 1 hr flight from Jakarta (NW of Java) and is in the Bangka-Belitung province of Indonesia (separated from Sth Sumatra in 2000).

With that slight correction made....this is a great hotel with friendly, efficient staff; smack bang in the middle of Tanjungpandan, the capital of Belitung Island. It is just near the main roundabout which gives you very easy access to the main department stores, supermarkets, warungs, sports shops and KFC takeaway should you need a western fix or blast of COLD air con. :)

We stayed for 6 days (wished we’d had a couple of days longer). We were the only 4 white people we saw in the whole time in the capital city. We only saw one other white couple (possibly European) on a beach on one day trip.

Anyway, I digress….

We booked this through Belitungisland.com. They are an EXCELLENT tour company and all our dealings with them were pleasant and spot on. We engaged them for a private van & guided photographic tour for 4d/3n and had them book the Billiton for an extra night either side for us.

Cost IDR520,000 per room inc tax/sc and full American style breakfast (omelettes cooked to order, western & Indo choices as well as toast, cereal, fruit, cakes, etc).

We had 2 x twin std (lead in) rooms; spotlessly clean, large & nicely appointed. Air Con (no fan) worked extremely well. 2 bottles water daily with housekeeping. Private balcony (we were on 1st floor). Writing desk, 2 comfy chairs, TV, a large robe/hangar space for luggage and a huge full length mirror in the room. Lots of walking space around beds with phone, clock radio and lamps by bedsides. Beds very comfy. Free wifi in rooms for iphone, laptop etc - password from front desk.

Bathrooms large; western toilet, full width mirror, all toiletries and a large, separate, tiled shower. Nicely set out and usable.

Can ask for hairdryers, clothes horse, towels for pool, etc at no charge.

The swimming pool is divided into two pools by a breezeway to the restaurant (choice of under cover pool side or fully enclosed room). One pool gets VERY deep very quickly. Nice, private area in the courtyard of the hotel.

There is also a praying room and a huge conference hall with a stage etc. Courtyard at front with security for parking vehicles.

Food was nice; more expensive than eating locally but still cheap compared to western hotel prices. Lovely, fresh strawberry juices. Beer available but not cocktails.

It is about 5 mins walk to the morning fish/vege market and a couple more to the port. It is about 30+ mins to the SPECTACULAR, WORLD CLASS beaches of Kelayang & Tangung Tinggi. You also get on small boats at Kelayang for a tour out to various small, GORGEOUS islands & to Lengkuas lighthouse island. The snorkeling at Lengkuas Island is some of the best we have experienced across the globe (better than the best of Tioman or Hawaii etc). This is a MUST DO and a definite highlight of our trip.

Our next visit to Belitung island will no doubt see more tourists and more infrastructure as a couple of beach hotels are under construction at present and the roads are being overhauled extensively by the Indo gov’t.

Can hire motorbike cheaply. The only downside is the lack of ‘taxi’s’ or hire cars (currently all with driver or via tour). In saying that, our guide, Erick, with Belitungisland.com tours was BRILLIANT and ensured we had a great time.

Inland scenery is okay but nothing to write home about. There is a lot of tin, clay and other mining inland. Kaolin Lake on city outskirts is awesome though for serious sunrise photographers. Colours and hues amazing.

We LOVED the Billiton Hotel and Belitung Island. We WILL BE BACK and next time will split our time; a few days at Billiton Hotel in the city and a few days close to the SUBLIME white sand, palm tree’d, granite rocked beaches of Kelayang & Tangung Tinggi.

Room Tip: Std rms good; next grade up even better. All good!
