I have been staying at this hotel, for short periods for the last 10 or 15 years on my business trips. And last four or five years during our salmon fishing period together with my son.
Last time while we were having a brake, from our intense fishing and having our drinks in their comfortable lounge we started talking about the service the hotel provides.
We suddenly realised that the staff never say "no" in this hotel. They always try to do their best to fullfil guests' wishes an expectations without any fuss.
This is a pleasent hotel in a pleasent environment with old traditions.Having a look at the oldest part of the hotel is a "must". And the director Mr.Arve Tokle is always at guests' service with interesting information about the hotels' past and the celebrities who stayed there through the years. The breakfast selection is rich and the food is good.
Try this hotel if you are around.I think you'll like it.

The Baardshaug Herregard is the only real choice if you want a hotel in Orkanger. It has a lot of character in the main lobby but the rooms are rather basic in size, furnishings, and fixtures, but this is not unusual for Norway so it is not really a valid complaint. The hotel has a new addition and the rooms are a bit better. I stay here for several weeks each year and most visitors are either port or energy industry people or travelers passing through. There are a limited number of restaurants in Orkanger (two Italian, one Chinese, one tapas bar) and the hotel restaurant serves typical regional fare: meat (often reindeer or moose), salmon, and chicken. Day fishing on the river for salmon can be arranged in season through the hotel. Everything is expensive in Norway, including the hotels. For most items they also add on 25 pct tax so don't judge the price by non Norwegian standards.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new wing.

On our trip to the south of Norway we stayed one night in this hotel. The hotel is a business hotel. The receptionstaff was very friendly, there is free coffee, but the room we got was small and dark (they were painting the walls in the hallways when we stayed in the hotel). The bathroom had a shower, but the showercurtain was too short so the whole floor went wet. There was not much choice on the menu in the restaurant, but the food was good. Breakfast was great.

We stayed here one night during a driving tour staying in historic hotels and guest houses in Norway. The hotel is a member of De Historiske group of historic hotels, and describes itself on the web site as a Manor House and Modern Hotel. All of the photographs and most of the text is about the manor house. It is actually a fairly anonymous modern hotel in a new administrative centre, with a manor house in its grounds. The manor house was't even open to view, let alone being able to stay in one of the historic rooms.
The rooms were modern, reasonably sized and clean - absolutely no problem, but not what we were led to believe from the web site and booking process.
We arrived around 1900 on Sunday evening, to find the restaurant was about to close! The Sunday menu was limited to say the least. The food was pretty ordinary, for the (quite high) price.

Stayed here for a month due to when travelling on Business, the hotel is very pleseant, very clean and has very firendly staff. Rates are high but it is in teh middle of nowhere in Norway where everything is expensive. Would stay here again.

I stayed in the hotel because nothing was available in Trondheim. It is about a 45 min taxi ride from Trondheim and about 1.5 hrs from the airport. The hotel was cute. The rooms were comfortable and the reception was warm. One word of warning, the rooms are not in the large green & white building shown on their website but a side, newer building. I walked around town. Not much to do, few restaurants, but a very beautiful river running through it. The restaurant at Bårdshaug Herregård is actually quite good. I would stay here again if I was in town but would rather be in Trondheim.
