This review only refers to the restaurant as we didn't try the hotel.

It is incredibly well presented, traditional-looking and elegant; almost like an old-school English pub/restaurant with tufted leather wall panels, dim lanterns and classic furnishings.

The service is also top quality - courteous, attentive and almost ceremonial. Bread rolls are dispensed with tongs. Waiters look immaculate with green waistcoats and total attention to detail. Which is why, as we sifted through the menu, we actually concluded that this restaurant could charge a lot more. Many of the starters are priced under €7, and the mains rarely venture in excess of €20 for giant portions. The range of display is excellent.

Our starters consisted of asparagus with two sauces and sizzled garlic mushrooms. Top quality and very generous portions, it almost spoiled our mains.

The mains were entrecôte with potatoes for me (it was so ginormous I left half of it, even though it tasted amazing) and the quintessentially Spanish "Bacalao Ajoarrero" for my partner, essentially a cod bake involving egg, potatoes, tomato sauce and pepper. Very hearty. As for the wine, we ordered the local Bierzo white. The waiter made sure we were satisfied with the temperature, which we appreciated.

We also ordered "leche frita" for dessert. That was probably the weakest, as it came stone cold and was quite clearly not the freshest.

In any case, a definitely positive experience. Would return.

We stayed in this hotel while on the Camino Frances.

It was very well located adjacent to the cathedral and a stones throw from the main plaza.

The room we had looked out on the Cathedral and the museum. Excellent. We also faced away from the setting sun. More excellent.

All the staff were hospitable and helpful.

The pilgrims meal we had, had an abundant choice and the food was to a first rate standard - not second best like you find with a lot of other places that serve a pilgrims menu.

We would definitely recommend this hotel

We stayed here overnight while walking the Camino and were given a fabulous suite with two bedrooms ! We had brilliant views of the Gaudi Palace, and a grandstand view of the early Pilgrims starting there next day.

Arriving in Astorga in the heat of the day from walking the Camino we threaded our way thru the crowds at the street market and were happy to find the Hotel Gaudi. We had read about it from Rick Steves and were ready for the overabudance of wood decor. The highlight was a window that looked out at the Palacio and cathedral. Spectacular. We chose not to eat there and there are many other options in the town. It was nice to be at that end of town when we left at 5:00 a.m. to start walking. Hard to wake the front desk person even tho they said there was someone available 24 hours. Very clean and a great tub.

We had a junior suite with a view of the Palacio and the cathedral. Decor was very kitschy, very Gaudi. We didn't have much choice as we got to Astorga late on a holiday weekend, but luckily the Gaudi had space and was reasonably priced. We parked on the street and just fed the meter. Conveniently located for exploring the nearby towns on the Camino del Santiago. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the palacio and cathedral.
