Enjoyed three nights in a very comfortable if a little basic cottage – Blue Crain.

The restaurant a short walk from the accommodation was excellent and good value; we had all our meals at the restaurant.

The cottage had an adequate kitchen for self catering; you would need to bring everything with you, the small “shop” at the reception has very little to offer. The kitchen fittings were of a very inferior quality which I felt let the house down a little. The cottage only has one toilet separate to a room with shower and bath. There were three bedrooms; 2 twins and one double; beds were very comfortable.

An early (6am) walk to observe birds which was included in our rental was very enjoyable; there is an amazing diversity of bird life. The guide was not very knowledgeable but this did not detract. We saw Zebra and walked close to herds of Eland and Bontebok which were not frightened by us and we also saw a large troop of baboons.

The beach is truly stunning; the white sand dunes are breathtaking. Beware of high UV reflecting off the sand we all got a little too much sun!

Access to the reserve is by gravel roads which are good enough for all cars but you might feel a lot more comfortable with a high set vehicle; a 4 x 4 thought is not required.

We had been looking forward to going to 'de Hoop' for a long time. When I phoned to book I was given only one price for accommodation which was, for the average South African pensioner, very, very expensive. The following day my husband phoned and the lady then said that they had nice vlei facing rondavels for almost a third of the price, but you had to share a kitchen with the next rondavel. That sounded fine, but when we arrived there, oh my goodness. We were put in an oval shaped 'rondavel' in the most gorgeous position on the edge of the vlei, but no view. At the end of the 'rondavel' facing the view there are built-in cupboards and no window. There is no little patio or verandah to sit outside. The rondavel was big, one king sized bed and two single beds and the bed linen was good, but not even a tap or washbasin there to wash hands, and the kitchen, which had to be shared with another family, was cramped, had one stove and one small fridge, and I cannot imagine what it would be like to have two families trying to cook in there at the same time. It was all very depressing. However, management very kindly upgraded us, as the resort was very quiet, and gave us what they call an 'Equipped Cottage' which was very nice even though it was not near the vlei. It was well equipped and nicely furnished and had a nice braai outside with table and benches, and peace and quiet in the extreme, as we were the only people staying in that row of cottages, and this we really enjoyed.
The resort on the whole is beautifully kept, very clean and neat, and the cottages are pretty, as is the restaurant, which we didn't try as we were self-catering. There are lovely walks along by the vlei and through the veld and well-marked cycle tracks which we enjoyed, having taken our bicycles with us, although you can hire bikes there. The beach is lovely, but is 14km away, which means getting into your car every time you want to go to the beach, or have a very bumpy cycle ride to get there. It is very pleasant to be able to wander through herds of Bontebok , Eland and Zebra and seeing them so unafraid and in such good condition.
We very much enjoyed our 3 days there, but if we'd had to stay in the first accommodation that we were given, it would have been a different story. There are also 4 proper rondavels overlooking the vlei in the camping area. They actually looked very nice from the outside, but they were not offered to us and we did not have to opportunity to look inside any of them.
It appears that 'de Hoop' does not cater for South African Pensioner couples and the good accommodation there is way beyond the pocket of the average South African pensioner.

Room Tip: Do not book for 'rondavels' Francolin or Guinea Fowl. The camping area looks nice of you wan...

We stayed in the newly refurbished stable overlooking the vlei. It was perfect. The food was extremely good and the staff friendly. The whole environment is very peaceful and restful with beautiful coastal scenery and plenty of wildlife. Our two day stay was over too quickly.

De Hoop Collection is a variety of accommodation, from camp site to houses. We stayed in the Opstal B suite, which was just fantastic - filled with beautiful antiques and gorgeous books. From there we could look out on to the vlei which absolutely teems with bird life. We spent hours watching. The beaches are 14 kms away from the accommodation and one must go there at low tide to get the full effect - this was not made clear to us, which was a shame, but luckily we had 3 days to work it out. The restaurant is lovely but the set 3 course dinner incredibly filling and the only meal available at night, unless you are in self catering.

Room Tip: Definitely go for Opstal B suite rather than no 1, as 1 has no area to sit. Cottages 7,8 and 9 looke...

Rented the Melkkamer vlei cottage. It is a 40 min drive from reception and you feel like you are alone on an island. The house does not have electricity but a gas fridge, freezer, stove (SMEG) and gas geyser is provided. We forgot a flashlight but there are more then enough lanterns to use. The beach is extremely beautiful and you can follow the trail and reach beach up on beach up on beach! A definite must! Remember to take all your food, water and wine.

I recently stayed at the De Hoop nature reserve in a group of more than 60, as part of a university field trip. It has to be one of the most tranquil, scenic and welcoming places I have ever stayed. The grounds have a wealth of history and the accommodation is superb, with equally superb service from the staff. The wildlife is free to roam both the site and the outlying scrub making it easy to encounter something new each day. We all had a brilliant experience exploring and identifying the local wildlife. You might have to look harder to find some of the rarer species, it is no private game reserve, but that makes it more of an adventure. This was one of the best experiences of my life and I truly hope to return in the coming years. It is very much missed but I have some deeply fond memories.

Room Tip: We were camping for the duration of our stay, so I cannot comment on the rooms. However, for those w...
