Enjoyed three nights in a very comfortable if a little basic cottage – Blue Crain.
The restaurant a short walk from the accommodation was excellent and good value; we had all our meals at the restaurant.
The cottage had an adequate kitchen for self catering; you would need to bring everything with you, the small “shop” at the reception has very little to offer. The kitchen fittings were of a very inferior quality which I felt let the house down a little. The cottage only has one toilet separate to a room with shower and bath. There were three bedrooms; 2 twins and one double; beds were very comfortable.
An early (6am) walk to observe birds which was included in our rental was very enjoyable; there is an amazing diversity of bird life. The guide was not very knowledgeable but this did not detract. We saw Zebra and walked close to herds of Eland and Bontebok which were not frightened by us and we also saw a large troop of baboons.
The beach is truly stunning; the white sand dunes are breathtaking. Beware of high UV reflecting off the sand we all got a little too much sun!
Access to the reserve is by gravel roads which are good enough for all cars but you might feel a lot more comfortable with a high set vehicle; a 4 x 4 thought is not required.
