“Just a wonderful place”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

This surpassed all expectations, in the middle of the fabulous fynbos with an incredible lake for bird-watching and great views.
The self-catering rooms are great, we made one meal, saving a bit of money and then ate in their restaurant one night. We had a good meal next to a log fire and lots of delicious wine and great prices.
One great treat was a bird-watching tour at 6am, difficult to get up that early but so worth it. We saw the otters on the lake and fish-eagles and our guide was so knowledgeable. We learnt loads and it was v cheap, free if you stayed for two nights.
The highlight was sitting on the glorious beach and watching whales swim by and leaping out of the water so close. Anyone into photography would have a field day.
People were very friendly and helpful too, but you need to bring your own food.

The de Hoop Collection is off the beaten track but a wonderful place to visit for land-based whale watching. We visited at a time when there were scores of whales and their babies swimming off shore. What a thrill! The immense sand dunes are breathtaking. There is also a good variety of birds in the reserve, including ostriches, pelicans and flamingos, as well as Cape zebras, elands, bonteboks, and scores of baboons. Make sure you take one of the morning nature walks.

We were originally booked into one of the vlei cottages which was spacious and well-appointed. However, there was a musty smell and it was also freezing! By the time we realized we could buy wood at the on-site store, the store had closed and so we had to sleep with layers of clothes on. It would have been helpful if staff had warned us to buy wood in time. In any case, we ended up being upgraded to the Manor House which was very luxurious and comfortable (and had a wood stove to keep us warm!). We loved watching the industrious weaver birds in the gigantic fig tree outside the Manor House. The males spend hours constructing nests but have to start over again if the females find them inadequate and then toss them to the ground!

Staff were very helpful and friendly. The food in the restaurant was also surprisingly delicious. We especially liked the morning croissants which equalled and maybe even surpassed the quality of ones we had in Paris!

We hired two cottages (three bedrooms each) for two nights for our overseas family visitors.
The cottages are well equipped and we had a braai each night, although we have eaten at the restaurant on previous visits.
De Hoop is our favourite nature reserve because it's safe to walk anywhere - no predators.
We had our own bicycles with us and did a couple of very interesting rides. I have hired a bicycle from the office before and I would recommend you take your own.
The whale watching was excellent and we really enjoyed our time in the reserve and on the beach. The overseas visitors were very happy.
My two grandsons, aged five and three, also enjoyed themselves.
At 4:00PM one day we reported a bad water leak coming out of the ceiling of one of the bathrooms, and the staff had it completely fixed within an hour.

Room Tip: Choose cottages 8 or 9 for the best situation, next best is cottage no. 7.

I was pleasantly suprised. The Opstal self catering cottages weres clean and fresh with nice decor.
The Manor House was an experience - National Monument acommodation - huge with four poster bed - a unique experience
The food in the restaurant was top class as well as the service from the staff.
Huge sandunes, whales in abundance, bike rides around the vlei. A place to lift your soul.

Room Tip: For self catering - the Opstal Houses are the best

We stayed in a rondavel. It was cozy and it was located next to the river. From there, we saw a beautiful sunset.
The showers are magic. You take a shower in the middle of the nature.
The only problem that I found was that there were many baboons. The toilets are outside (shared). I avoided going to the toilets at night for fear of finding a baboon on my way. You can see their footprints on one of the toilets' wall :-/

Room Tip: Stay in the room 5, "Heron", it is the closest to the toilets.

We went to De Hoop for the long weekend and while some of our group are avid campers...the others appreciate a little more comfort. When I called to book a chalet I was told there were only cottages available...and it would have cost approx. R2000 per night for 4 of us....R6000-for a long weekend...there are cheaper options but we were informed they were fully booked...We decided to rough it and camp for R300 per site per night...When we were on site we noticed that there were plenty of available "cheaper" cottages and rondavals...and to be honest I felt a little like they were trying to fill the more expensive accommodation rather than give value for money. Our friends who did bite the bullet and pay for the expensive cottage were very disgruntled- one bathroom for 3 bedrooms...No coffee plunger...Nescafe sachets... The staff are all helpful and pleasant BUT i am saddened that such a beautiful place is becoming out of the financial range of normal South African's... The campsite kitchen area is well appointed and kept clean and supplied with dishwashing liquid and sponges, bathrooms are clean but hot water in short supply...Friends ate in the restaurant and were definitely NOT impressed by the food or service!

Very cosy, comfortable and well-equipped self-catering cottage within the boundary of the nature reserve. Breath-taking views from huge back dunes across the ocean dotted with calving southern right whales and pods of dolphins, and herd of eland, bontebok and zebra behind the cottage made this one of the most unforgettable holidays ever. We didn't use the on-site restaurant but bought wine at the bar to enjoy with our home-cooked barbecues. Staff throughout utterly charming and exceedingly helpful. A very, very special place.
