Castello di Tocchi
Reviewed January 20, 2011

I have stayed at Castello di Tocchi numerous times over the last 10 years, on tours and individually with friends. The setting is a charming medieval hamlet overlooking amazing forestland. It has always been a tranquil experience for me. The apartments are a bit rustic, but they are comfortable, clean and cozy. It is wonderful to stay there as the rooms are lacking only in the often unnecessary fixtures of our hectic lives…phone, television, internet and other annoyances. The Food at Cucina delle Castello is fabulous, I gained five pounds:) the meals were all ancient Tuscan recipes and the cool thing was they served a lot of local produce. I took cooking classes that were to die for. I also spent time on many guided excursions, hiking, biking, or by car. The best of course are the horse guided tours! Vittorio, the owner was always happy to accommodate our ideas and plans. He has extensive knowledge of the history and culture of the area and his kee sense of humor had us laughing so hard we had stomach aches from laughing so hard!! Lots of fond memories of an exceptional vacation. I recently saw that he has been rated a top guide worldwide by reputable sources.
Another item that I would comment on is that If you are looking for a Ritz Carlton and big city bling experience, this is not the place for you. If you want a truly unique, cultural experience then you will love it!. A place that keeps it real!!! This place rocks if you want top-notch accommodations. Happy Travels:)

This castle is an authentic representation of what a typical country castle was in the late middle ages. Very charming accommodations with attention to being "green", great food, comfortable rooms and very knowledgible host. As a fairly large group, this location lends itself well to group activities. We experienced the horseback riding and had a very enjoyable time. Not the fancy "cater to your every whim" resort/spa one pays a fortune for, but the trully memorable visit to an authentic locale. For a more upscale fancy experience, stay at the sister site, "Villa Ferraia" - now that's pampering!

We hoped for Romance, and what we found were stray cats in a dirty little village. Castello is not a "castle" at all, but an Italian shanty town lacking in charm and clean towels. Our
"host" Vittorio was never seen, and did not respond to our desperate phone calls. If you want a holiday I do not recommend it. The promised swimming pool was the size of a bathtub, if only there were clean towels to dry off!

Looking for a relaxing holiday in Tuscany with a base near Sienna so
we could visit Sienna, Florence and surrounding villages, our travel
agent recommended and we booked Castello di Tacchi. The recommendation
and booking were both made based on the website description which proved
to be incorrect and misleading.

For example on the page describing the village, " you can spend your
days exploring the the numerous walks and pathways... or alternatively
you can take part in a variety of activities organized with the help of
our staff. Guests can participate in a series of guided tours .....take
part in a cooking course run in the municipal rooms in the centre of the
village or go horse back riding."

In actual fact, there is no village as such, no municipal rooms in the
centre, no activities, no store, not restaurant, no phone, no people at
all. There was no host and no staff, other than someone who came the
second day to see if another guest had given us our key and to give a
few sheets of paper with a list of sites and resources in the region,
all available in any travel book.

Essentially, it was a furnished apartment within the ruins of a medieval
castello in Tuscany, about 40 mnutes from Sienna.

There was no one on site to speak to about clean towels, no heat ( we
were told by a man in the village of Tocchi that it was against the law
to turn on the heat in the apartments until November ). At dinner in
Sienna, we spoke to people who were staying at another castello and they
said they had heat but had to pay extra, which we would have done also.

Indeed, we never saw anyone host or guest at the Castello, except
another Canadian guest one day equally disappointed, and a sculptor one
day who has a studio.

The bottom line is that we booked the apartment, at nearly $3000.00 for
2 weeks September 28 - October 12, based on the description on the
website of the charming host, attentive staff, small but vibrant
village, possible activities. We stayed one week in the cold and
isolation, and left very disappointed on October 6.

We feel that given the gross misrepresentation, we should be compensated
for the days that we missed.

My wife and I stayed at Vitorrio's other property, Villa Ferraia just down the road from Castello Di Tocchi. It was no less than fabulous. The food, accomodations, warmth of the hosts and facility were all terrific. We were there for a riding vacation and the quality of the horses were equal to every other aspect of our stay.

I'm a senior investment banker and typically stay in high quality hotels wherever I go. Ferraia did not disappoint in the slightest.

I'd go back in a heartbeat and am already telling my friends how much I enjoyed it.

Ciao

If you want to escape from the chaos of city traffic, crowds and noise, Castello di Tocchi is the escape for you. Nestled in a beautiful tuscan forest of chestnut trees, surrounded by the sounds of mother nature the Castello is a real find. The walled village which was contructed in the twelfth century has been restored to 21st century comfort whilst retaining the external appearance of the medieval fortified castle. Vittorio, the owner and his wife Patrizia treat their guests like family. You enjoy the fabulous tuscan cuisine and hospitality including local produce such as wild boar and pecorino cheeses always complemented by wonderful local wines. Vittorio will regale you with stories and jokes about life in this tuscan hamlet and will take you on trips to wineries, cheese makers, oil factories etc. If you are a keen horse rider Vittorio will lead you thorugh some of the beautiful forest trails. We felt like we were in another world for our week with Vittorio and Patrizia, we never gave our hectic city lives or jobs a second thought. Highly recommended

Wow does not even begin to describe the wonderful experience. His Villa is on a hill overlooking Tuscany, down a little dirt road outside of Tocchi. Fed us like Kings, Toured the countryside and treated us like family. Victorio the owner is one of most down to earth, funny, smart and entertaining persons we met in Italy. The Castello has expanded and contains property farther down the driveway. We did see the original accommodations for the Castello, The interior at both accommodations are very well appointed and comfortable. This is a rustic setting in stone building I think dating 500 plus years old. The interiors are renovated and furnished as a villa would be. If you want a marvelous adventure in a spacious authentic Italian/Tuscan accommodation with gracious hosts then this is the place.

I read the earlier revue and can only say it appears like somebody may have arrived at the Castello, turned their nose up at the rustic exterior, left and possibly had issues with Victorio canceling last minute. (1)Public phone location are everywhere, located within 5 to 7 miles are about 10 location like a gas station that had phones. Victorio always kept his phone handy, always answered it and speaks English fluently; 2) The dirt road was about one mile long to the Castello; 3) the village is quiet and small, I would not describe it as “no signs of life”.) So if you want an American style hotel that you can order bacon cheese burgers from room service at 1:00 am and watch HBO on cable this is the wrong place. Too bad he didn't stay he would have had a vacation of a lifetime.
