Tenuta di Mensanello
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 13, 2013

This was our second visit to Mensanello having stayed for a week in 2006. We booked again because we had a great time in 2006 and we were not disappointed. Carla was at the gate to greet us again (her sense of timing is uncanny) and she provided the same exceptional service. Mensanello has a unique charm and provides an exceptional Tuscan farm experience.
We shared a three bedroom apartment with another couple providing a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The staff were always welcoming and friendly and some great dinners were had in the restaurant with great friends. Mensanello coped very well with our group of 10. While the experience was great I suggest the owners pay more attention to detail such as providing electric kettles, toasters and fans. We had unseasonably hot weather and while the beautiful old stone buildings are usually very pleasant they did not cope with 40+ temperatures ... a ceiling or pedestal fan would have been great. If the little things mentioned had been provided I would have Mensanello as excellent. Again Carla is fantastic and her charm really enhances your stay.

This is an old farm village converted into accommodation, in various buildings on the sight, and in the middle of a working farm. A toaster and an electric jug would have made the review excellent. We finished up buying our own lighter for the gas stove too. Given those few annoyances the place is great. A very large pool, well kept, an onsite restaurant (fixed menu, but who cares, it was tuscan food), breakfast cafe if required, washing machine and free wifi. We were in a party of 10 and some complained that there was no aircon in some rooms, but its summer and summer is hot. We toured the local town and wineries over the 7 days and had no real complaints. The staff were very helpful in all respects.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms with aircon, but we all coped. Our rooms faced west and had a verandah, so th...

We recently stayed at Tenuta di Mensanello in a group of 7 which included parents, siblings and our nephew. On arrival the property was really stunning and the courtyard and main farmhouse was really impressive, set in a quiet street overlooking the countryside and small hamlet of Mensanello.

On arrival the host Carla was friendly and welcoming and her English is excellent – she was also very gracious in helping us with our basic Italian which we practised on her constantly!

Our room was in the Corti or Courtyard and was just above the small breakfast room (we never experienced any noise from this in our bedroom however). The room was beautifully furnished in a real rustic Italian style and we had a large bedroom overlooking the courtyard, a mezzanine level sitting area upstairs, a small but very new and clean bathroom and a kitchen/ sitting area. We shared a balcony with my parents . The room was lovely although it was let down but some basic lack of facilities when we first arrived, such as having no kettle or the all-important wine glasses. This was rectified immediately by Carla however. We would have really liked an induction to the property and also some more information in the room too such as details of the restaurant, farm shop and perhaps some recommendations on local restaurants (we did mention this to Carla during our stay so hopefully this will be included for future guests). Carla was able to help with all our requests including booking a restaurant for us but just some more information in the room would have been nice.

We had dinner in the restaurant on our first night which was really good value for money at 23 euros per person including a bottle of wine, however it was a set menu and food was just served to you. I would have preferred a menu so I knew what was being served, especially as I am not keen on many meats etc. However, the food was varied and delicious and I certainly didn’t go hungry.

The pool area was immaculately clean and well-kept including the lovely gardens although we certainly needed a few more sun loungers as there were only 4 available. Not enough for our party of 6 adults, let alone any other guest staying. Plenty of deck chairs were available however but this would have made the pool area even better in our opinion. Sometimes the toilet near the pool had no toilet paper too so we needed to bring our own, although this seemed to improve during our stay.

We were really keen to sample the farms’ wine and olive oil which you can buy from the shop but more needed to be made of this in our opinion. We would have loved to have had some shipped home but sadly this wasn’t an option and given the weight restrictions on flights we were really limited in what we could bring back.

On a negative note, we felt the room needed cleaning at least once during our stay and also the bed linen and towels should have been changed, as per the information on booking.com. Although we were only there for a week, it would have been preferable to have at least one linen change during the week. There was also a highly annoying guard dog opposite the property which did keep us awake sometimes at night or woke us in the morning, however we appreciate there is nothing the venue could do with a neighbours’ dog! The negatives are very minor and not something that hugely affected our holiday, it was just more to note for future guests.

Otherwise, we would highly recommend Tenuta di Mensanello and wish we could have stayed longer enjoying the excellent wine and stunning Tuscan countryside.

For a taste of the real Tuscany, a 360 view from hills top to the Chianti wineries and olive groves.
Located in a old rural hill top village, surrounded by the tenuta, and at just 10 minutes driving from both Casole d'Elsa and Colle val d'Elsa.
The Roncuccis, Carla, Viola, Filomena and the cook Nadia will give you a warm welcome in the family.

We booked this agro farm as a family and it was a perfect setting looking out over the Tuscan countryside. Carla was most helpful and showed us two room options. The meal at the farm was typical Tuscan and very nice. The pool was a delight (although we could have had a few more loungers) as we were often the only ones there. The Chianti wine they produce is extremely nice and I only wish we could have had some shipped back. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get away from it all! The wifi, if you do need it is also excellent.

A great place to stay for 7 days and explore the Tuscan hill towns. Right in the middle of it all without all the tourist stuff. We found the staff amazing and very engaging! Restaurant could be improved, but there are plenty of other places to eat.

We chose Tenuta di Mensanello because we wanted to holiday on a working vineyard/winery in Tuscany. Arriving late, we were pleased to find Carla waiting for us at the gate. After settling us into our two-bedroom villa, she called ahead to the on-site restaurant and arranged a family style meal of five hearty courses, complemented with Mensanello wine.
The villa, of rustic stone on the outside, was cozy on the inside, with beamed ceilings, fireplace, plastered walls and updated fixtures. Postcard views from every room made us wish we were permanent residents. The co-op in Poggibonsa is a ten-minute drive and provided all our necessities (including an array of spices we purchased to take home).
Over the next few days, we alternated day trips to Florence, Sienna and Volterra with walking trips around Mensanello's picturesque buildings. The church across the street is quite old, serving as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Rome during Medieval times. We found it hard to leave after such a delightful stay.
