Palazzo San Lorenzo Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 4, 2012

In all, the hotel is quite good, quite comfortable - but very impersonal. An old building (XVII-XVIII century) was transformed from the inside in a modern style and completely devoid of character and soul. I saw a lot of modern hotels in historic buildings, though preserved the style and character, or acquired new and unique. But not this one. The interior is too modern, minimalistic and cold for a cozy Tuscan village, this interior would approach more to a big city business hotel. Palazzo is a member of “Dimore d'Epoca” group, but has nothing antique in style and atmosphere or giving the chance to feel a sence of time when its walls were constructed .
We arrived at 5 pm, a spa pool (because of which we've chosen this hotel) worked up to six, we wanted to relax in it after a day's sightseeing, but could not - the lock in our room was broken and we lost time while waiting for its repair. Why not to make spa zone and pool available around the clock, or at least until 9 pm? The hotel restaurant was not working for dinner. At the reception we were advised restaurant nearby, but were not offered to book, and when we came there, the restaurant was completely full. Wandered in search of another restaurant, found nothing, so were to return to the hotel, and only than the reception employee booked us a table at the other restaurant, we did not reach 500 meters to it while searching. Interesting that nobody of locals pointed this restaurant, everybody sent us to first, crowded. But it was good enough. In short, it was a great exercise walking up and down a steep hill before a very late dinner :). Generally the hotel is located near the center of a small town, where almost nothing to do, a life in which freezes very early in the evening, and the main evening entertainment will be walking through the deserted streets.
The room was quite big and comfortable, good cosmetics. View does not represent anything outstanding - road and tiled roofs, it makes no sense to overpay for it, although it is a matter of taste. I liked our friend’s standard room with no view more than our superior room with view. Although cheaper, it was more cozy, had a jacuzzi tub and 2 sinks with very comfortable bathroom furniture. Our superior room was equipped with a shower and one standard sink – not very comfortable for a couple. Breakfast was okay, but again too soulless and uninteresting, in a crowded room and with synthetic disposable wipes on tables. The feeling that the hotel is economizing. Wi-fi was in the rooms and worked well, free parking was in a two steps from the hotel , it is also a great plus. And the main advantage is the price, but the quality is not 4 stars, for this price the comfort is quite good but quality of service must be improved.

Dear Mrs Natella,

I thank you for your stay in September.
I’m sorry that you did not like the Hotel, anyway after reading your review, I would like to suggest you for your next stay in Tuscany our Palace in Radda in Chianti, Palazzo Leopoldo.
It is a renovation of an ancient building that kept the same atmosphere of the past.
Best regards,

Renato Zordan

We stopped at Palazzo San Lorenzo for 4 nights in July of this year. The hotel came highly rated on Trip Advisor, and I have to say in virtually every respect deserves the praise. It is reasonably easy to find (better with gps which is essential in Italy!!) in the "old" part of the town at the top of the hill (old means historical...) and despite its position on a small narrow street has very convenient (free) parking just around the corner. Hotel has been refurbished to high standards, room was very nice and enormous by European standards (the bathroom alone was as big as some hotel rooms!!). Staff were friendly and helpful, European breakfast was good, and welcome drink was a nice touch. Location is good for exploring Tuscany by car.
Definitely can recommend this hotel.

The facility itself is nice, new. The staff throughout is inexperienced and rather cold. It just felt like no one cared, things like the front desk clerk being on the phone throughout the whole checkin process, no hello, no welcome. At breakfast having to chase down he waiter for a coffee, again no good morning. Being charged $20 per person to access the indoor pool for 35 minutes despite paying almost $200 for a room. The spa staff was also cold and wooden, not your usual expecation. The word hospitality has not been taught at this hotel . A shame

Dear Guest,
We are sorry that you did not like the service received during your stay in our Palace.
Actually we don’t agree with the words “inexperienced” and “rather cold” but of course we are sorry that you felt this.
Anyway, if you want to try once again our service we wait for you at San Lorenzo.
Best regards,
Renato Zordan

We stayed in this hotel for 6 days and use it as our base to explore Tuscany. It is a great place to stay. The rooms and bathrooms are large, clean, and very comfortable. It is a very quiet and private place. While it is in an old palace, the design inside is modern and simple. Beds are superbly comfortable. Although the air-conditioning was working, there were moments when we would have preferred a degree or two lower temperatures. The breakfast is excellent – great choice of fresh food in a very nice space. We also had a dinner in their restaurant and both food and service were outstanding. When booking, it is clearly stated that access to the pool, saunas, and spa is at extra cost. My regret is that we never had time to try it. The city is charming and quiet and ideally located for visiting Tuscany. Finding place may be initially a problem (maybe instructions on the web site would be helpful). You have to get to the upper/old part of the city on the top of the hill. For this, if coming from the Sienna Florence highway follow the signs for San Gimignano. Once you get to the top of the hill, and before you pass the city walls, you will see the sign for the hotel – turn left and then right into the first street. The hotel will be on your right. You can park for free either on the street in front of the hotel or in the large parking outside of the city walls (one minute walk – pass the hotel, go through the walled city gates and turn immediately left). There is a great restaurant right across the hotel (Oficina). I hope that I will have an opportunity to come back and highly recommend this place to anyone.

Will definitely stay there again. We love this town and this hotel made the experience even better. The service was everything you expect from a hotel of this quality and they were extremely helpful with helping us book our next hotel.

The apartment is fantastically located in a beautiful medieval walled town with fine views over the town and surrounding countryside. It is comfortable, clean and adequately equipped, although the air conditioning didn't cope well with the August heat. We found it spacious for four, and thought it a very pleasant place to stay.

We didn't use the hotel itself for much besides checking in and out, but the staff were pleasant and helpful.

The town is a real gem, especially as it doesn't seem to get overrun by tourists. Nevertheless it has a good selection of restaurants and bars. It's also a good base for visiting Florence and Siena, as well as some of the better known Tuscan hill towns.

Really liked this place. Large, clean, quiet, modern rooms, big comfortable beds; helpful staff; the included breakfast was very good. Highly recommended.

You have to park in the small street in front, or at a lot nearby. We found a spot on the street about a 45 second walk away.
