“A quiet gem”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

We stayed at the Palazzo San Lorenzo in the tiny Tuscan town of Colle di Val d'Elsa last week.
It was a charming walled medieval town, not overrun with tourists and sightseers. No tour buses here, the streets are too narrow for cars much less buses.
The hotel was very modern in decor and the marble bathrooms were great. Breakfast included in our rate and was excellent for a start to the day. The town itself was in a great location for day trips in the car to Siena, San Giamanino, and Voltara. A nice quiet charming place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front to see the town.

We stayed at this place from July 4th to July 8th. The staff were very nice and helpful. We appreciated the advice they gave us to make our trip easier to Toscany ! The hotel is located in the historic city center and is a big contrast with the comtemporary interior, in a good way. The room is large with free Internet access and is very clean. The bed was very comfortable. The free parking is near and large enough. The buffet offers American and European dishes for breakfast and it was good. The restaurant of the hotel ''Sopra Le Murra'' is just ok, but we found other good places to eat in the historical center. The ''City of Crystal'' is very charming, quiet and far away from the mass tourism. We recommend this hotel

A surprise to find such an elegant and well-presented hotel in such a small village. There is a spa, which I didn't use - usage free for guests unless you need to hire bathrobes - 15 Euros. The room was beautifully designed and furnished - lovely shades of grey and cream with dark brown detailing. Lighter wooden floors and a huge bathroom. Air con was excellent! Wonderful breakfast.

Room Tip: Our room looked over the main street but there was no noise issue.

Driving from Florence, the hotel was bit hard to find, as the GPS was encouraging us to enter a road that was note quite finished yet, and blocked by road equipment. But, we made a simple phone call to the hotel and we received a friendly voice at the other end. The front desk woman spoke English clearly and guided us easily to the Palazzo SL.

There is no valet but it is easy enough to find parking in the nearby area which we did once unloading our luggage.

We stayed for 2 nights. The little town of Colle has two parts...an upper and lower. The lower more modern, but worth a tour, if just to check out the elevator and passage that takes you down through the ground to get to the lower part of town. The upper part is more charming, and quaint.

Colle is known for crystal making and you can find displays in many of the shops, restaurants and hotels. But if you have time it is worth a visit to one of the crystal maker's studios.

Our favorite restaurant was Frantoio in the upper part with in walking distance from San Lorenzo. Order the simple dish of handmade pasta with fresh truffles, or the Bisteca Fiorentina with fresh truffles shaved on top. Our server, Pina, was polished, and very knowledgeable about both wine and the chef's Tuscan cuisine. Her English was also excellent! The restaurant itself is romantic and has an old world, wine cellar charm.

Another restaurant, almost directly across the street from the hotel, had a nice outdoor seating area and came highly recommended by our hotel front desk staff, but we found the food to be VERY SALTY and service aloof.

The breakfast at Palazzo San Lorenzo is very good with many items to choose from: eggs, fruits, cakes, pastries, meats and smoked salmon; all were fresh including the juices. Breakfast was included for us.

The room interiors are CLEAN, modern, bathrooms are brand new and beds, slightly firm but comfortable. The AC really keeps the room cool. It would have been nice if the mini bar was stocked the first night as we opened it to grab a water and it was empty. However, the next day there were two waters in it, sparkling and still.

The Spa is one of the best parts of the hotel. Located below the the hotel, you can enter through the store front next door or by taking the hotel elevator to -1. There you will find a beautiful relaxing oasis of showers, a steam and sauna, warm colors of various lighting, and a relatively large indoor (thermal I believe) pool. The massage rooms are candle lit, and relaxing; they also have a room for couples massage.

The massage was really good with firm pressure and at Euro 60 it was excellently priced! Check for monthly specials like the lavender and olive oil Massage they had for just 55 Euro during our stay.

Keep in mind there isn't a fitness center. You will have to get your exercise by walking the town.

The hotel is perfectly located for touring the Chianti Wine Region, or for taking a day trip to Siena and/or San Gimignano.

I would absolutely stay at Palazzo San Lorenzo again.

Room Tip: Book a Junior Spa suite which will give you access to the relaxing facilities in the spa including t...

This hotel is rated 4 stars but we didn't feel we got 4 star service. The hotel was clean, but it was so soul-less that it was like staying in a clinical business travel hotel. Also, don't be fooled by the picture of the pool. You have to pay extra 20euros to use it. This has never happened anywhere in our travels.

Dear Guest,

I’m sorry you did not appreciated our service and you did not enjoyed our “soul”.
Regarding the heated pool, being inside the wellness centre is not included in the bed & breakfast rate. The reason is that we prefer to give a good rate for guests that are not interested in using our wellness facilities. Anyway we care about giving a good idea of what we offer to our guests, that’s why we highlight that it is not included. For the Guest that are interested in it we give also different type of discounts for the use (in reason of the number of nights they stay).

Hope to see you once again in our Palace,

Renato Zordan

We stayed at the palazzo San Lorenzo for five nights as part of a two week holiday in italy. We had driven up from Rome and although the hotel is hard to find, once we did we could not have been happier. The hotel has two parking spaces at the front for unloading bags. We checked in and were helped up to the room by a member of staff. The lady on the reception desk was so friendly and helpful and provided us with a map of the town and recommendations for local restaurants.

When we got up to our room we were absolutely over the moon. We had a standard double but it was huge! Massive bed, flat screen tv, fridge, complimentary water bottles each day, great sized bathroom with his and hers sinks, fluffy towels, nice toiletries. It was just perfect and we felt like we were in complete luxury. We had a great view over the Tuscan countryside. The room and the whole hotel was immaculate. Modern but with an edge of tradition at the same time.

Breakfast was great and very fresh selection of cereals, fruit, pastries, cakes etc. plus chefs dish of the day each day. The staff were on hand to bring extras such as cappuccino etc that weren't on the buffet.

The hotel is located more or less midway between Siena and Florence which was great for us. There is free parking just round the corner for after you have dropped off your bags (see above).

The town itself is beautiful, the top half in particular, which is in the old medieval fort. The lower part was a little less picturesque so we did not spend much time there. We loved the central square in the top half of town, and there was a live band there on the Friday night. The locals were out in force but the atmosphere was so friendly and relaxed. We absolutely loved it and it summed up our whole experience of this hotel. Would not hesitate to recommend it!!

We stayed for 4nights and enjoyed the hotel and surroundings very much. The hotel has all the modern amenities with the charm and feel of old world..The rooms are VERY clean. Very spacious. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom is modern and quite large. Hotel offers a bar, restaurant, and spa...Rooms have A/C, ours had a safe and small re-fridge. Breakfast was good and served an array of cereals , fruits, pastries along with cheeses , breads meats and more. Our hotel view was lovely. There is parking just down the road if you cannot find street parking. It is just a short walk into the small town and a short driving distance to other towns in Tuscany. We had no issues, it was a very relaxing few days. I would recommend this hotel to a friend and I would stay there again. Actually, I wish I was still there! BTW, the restaurant directly across the street is very good as well. Worth stopping in for a meal. It was so good we ate dinner there twice.

Room Tip: We stayed in a deluxe room...
