One of a series of short reviews after a South Island road trip!

Holiday park style of place really. We (3 of us) had a self contained 1 bedroom motel type unit. Small but had the facilities we needed and fine for just a night. Need to take your own washcloth and shampoo, but towels and soap were provided for the motel unit.

Had trouble finding the property, the signage is bad, and buildings are not visible from roadside and we were quite confused for a while.

It has lake access rather than being genuinely lake front, a short walk through trees etc takes you to a rocky foreshore. A beach area is further away, 15-20 min walk.

Not modern or flash but delightful, clean, quiet, perfect location and friendly. We had 3 nights in our caravan on a powered site and loved it. We would book here again any day.

I was traveling with my spouse and we met up with a friend of ours to travel in New Zealand. We stayed one night at the Possum Lodge. We had prebooked a backpacker room through the visitor centre in Te Anau. It's definitely more of a holiday park than a hostel so as long as that's what you're expecting you'll enjoy it.

It's a short walk to a beautiful lake. We didn't walk to any shops or anything as we were driving so not sure how close it would be to shops.

The cabin had 4 beds and a little table and chairs. We had a lot of items to dry out from camping in the rain and there was space to hang and drape them around. The bathrooms and showers were across the property from us but we managed not to get too rained on when we walked back and forth. The bathrooms were clean and even had a home feeling to them.

The kitchen facility included pots and pans and dishes which was nice. It was quite small though with seating for maybe 6-8 people tops. More like 4 adults as we often cleaned up sooner when other people were about to be eating since there wasn't a lot of space.

The staff we encountered were friendly. The heater for our cabin wasn't working and they happily gave us a different one that did work.

The price was decent which is why we chose this place initially. If we were in the area another time we would likely return to this place.

Possum Lodge is a great little place, no-nonsense, with spacious cabins that ona may clutter with all the stuff associated to bush walking in a rainy area, such as dirty boots, rainproof gear, backpacks. Its old-fashioned furniture (60s or 70s?) gives it an aura of remembrance...of time stopped. Well, even the bed may be that old, and in fact I did not sleep very well, too soft! But the place is clean, people at the reception are helpful, and the location is gorgeous, albeit the lodge itself is immersed within a beech forest. What I loved s the eccentricity of this lodge, with respect to usual NZ accomodations. Well, it is called after a hated creature, the possum, and this already tells you something. And it was the only place where you could watch good TV, given that NZ TV is probably among the worst in the whole World. At Possum Lodge you can choose from CNN to Al Jazeera, and get in touch with the World at large. It is a great accommodation for trampers, a real quite, secluded, funny alternative to the Hotels and Motels in the Fjordland. From there you could easily access both Doubtful and Milford sound. At the reception they will book the excursions for you. Well, the restaurants and shops in the village are not exciting at all. You really have to like a touch of quirky to stay there. But it is excellent value for money.

If you're looking for ultra modern accomodation you won't like it here - but if you're looking for a bit of nostalgia and value for money you can't beat Possum Lodge. It's like stepping back in time to 1960, but the incredible thing is all the fixtures and furniture look brand new! (Except for a flat screen TV). We really loved it, and very different from everywhere else we stayed in New Zealand.

The unit has a separate bedroom, small shower room and was very clean and well equipped. We didn't wander round the site so can't comment on the other facilities, but our unit was quiet, we could park outside and the setting was very peaceful. Although next to the lake there was no view of it, but a 2 minute walk took you to the waters edge.

We did the overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound with Deep Cove Charters - highly recommended, and drove up to Milford Sound (well worth the drive, fantastic scenery, and some great stops for walking on the way).

We stayed at Possum Lodge for two nights in February 2007. There are campervan parks and a backpacker dorm, and also three 60s style cottages. We stayed in one of the cottages and loved it. I think it was the best sleep I had for years, so quiet and the setting is perfect, right on Lake Manapouri. The cottages are fully self contained with all the cooking facilities, and were very clean. They were like a holiday house out of the 60s but actually I loved it. I booked direct with the owners and was so happy as it was booked out when we were there, as were most places we had stayed at around the South Island, so definitely pre-book before you travel. We went on the Doubtful Sound cruise which I highly recommend, better than the Milford Sound cruise I felt. The lake is lovely and take a swim while you are there, the beach is nearby and like most lakes in the South Island, the water is so clear.
