We were told that Milford Sound may be rainy, windy and cloudy. It seems at though we were super lucky as the weather was perfect as we cruised along the Sound enjoying Mother Nature at her best.

A slow cruise from the ocean to the Milford Resort takes a couple of hours (depending on vessel speed) and unfolds to you all of the majesty of this incredible place.

If you enjoy natural, unspoiled scenery, with a regular sighting of seals thrown in, then you will adore Milford Sound.

There's not a lot to say about the Sound other than try and describe the awe inspiring vertical cliffs, snow capped mountains and multitude of islands which may, or may not, have been visited by fishermen.

Milford is by far the most magnificent of the three sounds at the bottom of New Zealand's South Island, Dusky, Doubtful and Milford, and is an absolute must as a place to visit.

Recommended either as part of an ocean cruise or as a daily excursion from Milford Lodge.

I went on the Milford Sound Overnight cruise, aboard the Milford Wanderer with Real Journeys. The sun was shining, and it was an enjoyable trip, but it's a long way to travel from Te Anau where I was based, and having been on the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise a couple of nights before, I have to say it was slightly disappointing. Milford Sound really isn't very big, and there was a certain amount of going to and fro, and the commentator saying "as I said earlier...". If you're going to go to Milford Sound, do it as a day trip rather than an overnight, and if you only have time to visit one Sound on your New Zealand travels, skip Milford and go to the much larger and more accessible Doubtful; you won't regret it!

Cruising up Milford Sound as the mist cleared, with the clear water and the cliffs and mountains raising out of the water the views are quite breathtaking. Got up at 0630 to get a good view from the ship we were able to see Mitre Rock and the settlement.
A must for all cruisers and sightseers. Would be costly to reach by charter flight hence why there were many Kiwis on the cruise.

Like Sue P. This is my second time to cruise through the sound on a Princess Cruise. The weather was cool and raining, but that meant that there was a lot more waterfalls to see. The scenery is beautiful and certainly seeing it from the ship makes it accessible for a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to walk the trails or afford the helicopter flights etc.
Highly recommend, but obviously you need to go prepared with the correct clothing.

This would have to be the most stunning landscape I have seen. This is the second time I have been there on a Princess Cruise. First time it was cold and rainy but no less spectacular with the waterfalls seeming to be within reach of the ship. Didn't even need to get wet on deck as there are many vantage points behind glass windows. Second time was 2 weeks ago. The sun was shining and the scenery was so different from the first. You could see the tops of snow covered mountains and the whole vista was magnificent and awe inspiring. The ship had a very knowledgeable fiordland ranger come on board and does a commentary of the area for the whole time you are in this pristine wilderness.
Put it on your bucket list!
