We decided to take an all-in tour from Te Anau and were pleased that it was the right decision. The road is not so difficult that we couldn't take the mobile home we were using but the information from the tour driver and the stops we made in our small bus (about 20 passengers) were extremely interesting. Also, the cruise was the longest one, going out to the mouth of the sound, just on the edge of the Tasman Sea. There were fewer waterfalls than normal because there had been no rain for 6 days but this meant we were able to get out on the upper deck to get better views of the seals, penguins and dolphins. And the cruise included a visit to the underwater viewing area. Bearing in mind the 5 hour bus trip and the 2h45m cruise and a full smorgasbord lunch (and no long drive back to Te Anau) it was very good value at NZ$175 each.
