We wanted to try somewhere different to celebrate a family birthday and reading the menu online we decided to give this restaurant a go.
There was no one to meet us on arrival in the reception, however on ringing the bell we were told to go through to the restaurant. For a Thursday night and having been recommended to book we found we were the only customers. There is a nice bar area where we sat and enjoyed an aperitif whilst looking through the menu, no wine list was offered however. Upon ordering beef two ways (including a fillet steak!) we weren't asked how we'd like it cooked and when we questioned this were told its braised beef so no we don't ask how you like it but the fillet comes rare!
When taken through to our table, it had been decorated with a happy birthday banner and confetti, a lovely touch based on a conversation the staff had overheard as we had not mentioned when we'd booked.
Although there was a bottle of water on the table it was not poured and we then had to ask to see a wine list. Lovely bread on the table and starters arrived quickly, the fish cake, soup and smoked salmon were fine but the baby back ribs proved a disappointment, looking unappetising and being very dry.
Main course time and again a mixed bag, the duck shepherds pie was tasty if a little dry, the trio of fish was bland and the beef two ways was a complete disappointment, the fillet wasn't even good enough to feed a dog and certainly not rare!!!
As mentioned we were the only customers so atmosphere was severely lacking, however this wouldn't have been so bad if the service had been better!!! All the time we were there the 3 owners/staff were sat around drinking, chatting and quite frequently canoodling (and that's being polite!!) to the extent that one of our party commented that they needed a room!
After waiting a good 10 mins for the main course to be cleared ( and to note not being asked if the food was ok!) we had to go into the bar area to ask for the bill. The bill came to £100 for the four of us (on the early bird!), at this point we mentioned a few of the issues that we'd experienced during the evening (or I should say 1 hour that we were there), to be told this is the way we do things as a family business!
All in all we left feeling extremely let down and will definitely not be returning!!!!

We wanted to be looked after on a mid week break and this was ideal. Our beautifully decorated room in the tower was wonderful, with some lovely personal touches, such as books and binoculars. The locally sourced food was superb, the service friendly and brisk. Loved it. A harmonious family establishment. Unable to get wi fi, but that may have been our problem.

Room Tip: The tower room was impressive.

As soon as I knew I had some business in Bingley I contacted the Five Rise Locks Hotel as I had been very happy with a previous stay. I was not disappointed: the service was excellent and it retains the friendly atmosphere of a family establishment. It was particularly valuable to have such an excellent restaurant available. I was not keen to venture out into the December evenings with slightly limited mobility after a foot injury, and it was very welcome to have a lovely menu to choose from when I finished work well into the evening. There are lots of thoughtful touches - binoculars provided to enjoy the view, and attractive books to read the bedroom. Last time I sat up late to finish the one I started: this time I shall have to buy a title which I started there and could not finish.

Stayed here in May 2012 during a weekend trip to the region. Excellent accommodations; a classic small inn. The staff were friendly and helpful. Near to five locks on the canal which is well worth the short walk down the hill to visit. Breakfast was great. As others have noted, the layout is slightly quirky with many stairs and some rooms uniquely laid out. This adds to the charm of the place and for us was a definite positive, but something to ask about when reserving a room if you have any concerns or children.

An excellent hotel, superb food, impeccable service, and a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. It is adjacent to the canal and is a perfect centre for walking on the tow path. The bar is also well stocked and comfortable

Room Tip: Room 8 is the one we occupied and it has a bath with shower and is the only one on the ground floor.

Very nice hotel, clean and efficient. Well sighted to allow easy access to visit breathtaking countryside all around. Room was clean and spacious, though there were a couple of low doors to bang heads upon (doh!), and quite a lot of staircases to negotiate (particularly with a two-year-old in tow). Breakfast was very good, though I was a little surprised at the lack of black pudding... I'd happily stay here again.

We stayed here for our wedding night, everything about the room was perfect, it was clean, fresh and the bed was soooo comfortable. The important part for us was the breakfast which was a proper English breakfast and is just what was needed after such a busy wedding day before. A+++
