Like one of your other reviewers we, too, stayed at the hotel whilst attending a wedding reception there.
The wedding arrangements went smoothly and the food was good and served by attentive staff.
However, there are two things that prompted the title of this review:
- The hotel is, how can I say, "tired" and in need of some investment by the owners eg Our room - room 15 - was up in the attic and consequently had a sloping ceiling which was, frankly, dangerous because of its low height, the window was far too small, had an antiquated method of opening (we couldn't shut it right up) and clearly wasn't very safe if toddlers were in the room (sharp edges and non-safety glass). The shower cubicle was old with plumbing to match (the water oscillated from too hot to too cold) and was grubby. The room's décor was not very good, the finish was amateurish whilst the furnishings were cheap and un-matched...and there was no lift to get you up the numerous flights of stairs.
- The hotel is, I suggest, resting on its past history / quirkiness but is not up to the standards that the majority of seasoned travellers expect from a hotel of their star rating.....and certainly nowhere near the price band we were expected to pay (we paid £90 for B&B).

The staff were diligent and "committed to the cause" - all credit to them for being so - but anyone considering booking this hotel should take all the reviews into account and NOT be drawn in by their publicity material.

One last thing - they had Marmite available for breakfast (plus point)...but it was out of date by many months...!!

Stayed here after attending a wedding. The wedding etc went well and the food was good.Waiting on staff were competent and attentive.

However what spoilt it for us was our bedroom. My daughters room and mine smelt of smoke on arrival but with the window open we were so busy we never gave it a thought.

We didn't get a good nights sleep though because it smelt so bad, even the clean bedding smelt.

The hotel is worth a stay but choose upstairs rooms only and make sure its non smoking.I think if we had been told it was a smoking room we would have gone else where.

On leaving I did mention that we were not happy with the room and expected a discount which wasn't forth coming.I think £100 for the night was too much.

So just make sure you have the right info on arrival

Room Tip: Choose upstairs bedroom

From the moment we walked in till the moment we left everthing in this lovely hotel was first class. Our room was not large but very comfortable,we enjoyed the leather sofa,s restfulness while watching T.V.,"We had arrived very early for the function we were attending" The meal at the GOAS function was superb. Breakfast was so good. What A choice! The eggs were particularly good.

My wife and I have just had an overnight stay at this hotel, we were very impressed with this lovely old building, including the creaky uneven floors! The staff were very friendly, just as you would expect in Yorkshire, and the room we had was very comfortable and spacious. We even had a fourposter bed, as did our son and his partner who we were meeting up with.
For us the bed was a bit too firm, but we are used to a memory foam mattress, and at least it wasn't old and sagging.
We had a meal in the restaurant which was nothing special but at £17.50 for 3 courses and coffee, was very good value and it was cooked perfectly ok. just a bit unimaginative.
The cooked breakfast was really good and lots of it, in fact when I commented (jokingly) that I was the only one to have eaten it all, I was asked if I would like some more!
On the whole a very enjoyable stay and excellent value booked through LateRooms.com.
Just one point I didn't notice a lift but may have missed it and at least the very wide old staircase had shallow treads. You may want to ask before you book if you have trouble with stairs.

A delightful family-owned hotel which offers warm hospitality, good service and excellent value for money. The hotel is full of character, and the fact that most staff members have long service there speaks for itself. The location is very peaceful and the garden quite charming. No doubt it will be a very popular wedding venue in view of the historic character of the building and the beauty of the gardens.

Room Tip: We think that all rooms will be equally good - in terms of comfort and quietness.

Me & my husband had our wedding reception here. The staff were friendly, professional & were extremely attentive! The restaurant was decorated beautifully & exactly how I had asked for it to be presented & also how I had imagined it in my head prior to the wedding! The gardens were gorgeous & made my photographs look stunning! The food was delightful from start to finish! The room we stayed in was very luxurious & we slept really well! All our guests had a brilliant time & we've had non stop compliments on our excellent choice of wedding venue! Thank you all at oakwood hall for a perfect wedding day!

We visited the hotel as a party of 20 family members for a celebratory meal and were more than satisfied with the food and service. We can only rate this hotel as highly recommended. We chose Oakwood Hall because we had visited Oakwood Hall several times previously and have not been dissatisfied with value, food or service.
