As part of a three day attempt to do all there is on Fogo Island we enjoyed another lovely dinner at Nicole's Cafe. We were lucky to get in on a Wed evening at 8 without reservations! The dining room was busy with large and small tables but we were quickly seated and enjoyed excellent service from Candice.
The salad featured local greens and a partridge berry vinegrette. The dressing changes according to the seasonal availability of ingredients! Salt fish fritters with a curried dip and mussels were also excellent.
We couldn't get past the Jigg's Dinner special. Traditional Jigg's dinner with salt beef, turnip, carrot, parsnip, cabbage, potato and pease pudding.....and pickled beets on the table, just like home! Dinner for 3, with 3 bar drinks came out around $110 and worth every cent!
Breakfast of 2 eggs each, homemade toast (homemade bread) and partridge berry or bakeapple jam with Fair trade coffee was less than $11 for two people.
Lunch (we did have three days, you know) gave me a chance to try their excellent seafood chowder. Never made it to desserts and only did half of what's to do on the Island so I guess we'll have to go back!
Reservations are recommended but they did a great job of fitting us in unexpected.

We stopped at the Newfoundland tourist office at St Johns airport when we arrived in June. We spoke with the attendant about visiting Fogo Island, and the receptionist recommended Nicole's.
She was right, the place was great, in a beautiful and remote setting.
The food was fresh, local, tasty and the atmosphere was great. A wonderful experience in a very remote location.
Lunch included bisque, crab sandwiches, pies for desert, and a great cup of coffee. They had a lot of local beer as well. Highly recommended if you ever get out to Fogo Island.

We had lunch at Nicole's while visiting Joe Batt's Arm. Totally unexpected to find a restaurant like this in such a location. The food/service/atmosphere were great. Price was more big city-ish.

Nicole's Cafe is an amazing gem in a beautiful, out-of-the-way spot on Fogo Island. Nicole's serves gourmet variations of local cuisine, using fresh, local ingredients such as crab and pot-caught cod. Their lunch paninis with snow crab or angus beef are spectacular. The ambiance is warm and full of local crafts and art. This is not a typical outport restaurant, in my experience it is the nicest place to eat between Corner Brook and St. John's. It is not cheap compared to other outport restaurants - lunch runs $20-25 per person - but the quality is amazing and the location in Joe Batt's Arm is lovely.

Nicole's is a jewel of a dining room. Local organic vegetables, fresh seafood and traditional recipes dressed up and presented with pride make this one of the best places to eat in Newfoundland.
Scallops topped with local crab, cod, Jiggs dinner and lamb are featured on the menu as well as Angus beef. Serving 3 meals a day with homemade perks like bakeapple crème brulée, you won't go away disappointed!
It's an hour's drive from Gander and a 40 minute ferry ride to Fogo Island but worth every bit for this dining experience. Staff are well trained in all areas and an overnight might keep you there for breakfast and lunch!
