“be the maraja guest”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

this hotel gives you really the semsatio of how it would be a guest of the maraja!
in fact the property of the palace is still of the maraja which lives in the near palace.
the room was incredibly big and with very high ceiling that helped us to have a good sleep even with a/c off despite the hot outside temperature (we hate the noise of a/c in the night!).
the whole building itself expresses the luxury of a real maraja's residence.
the only disappointing was the breakfast not at the expected level. the only drink available was a fruit juice tha was finish after few minutes and not refilled. the cold milk was rotten and when
we asked for fresh milk the staff response was so slow and after ten minutes they brought us something like 1cc of milk!
this palce deserves a better service!

What a fantastic place. We live in Delhi but had never heard of Gwalior before.
The hotel. I must admit was part of the attraction and a monsoon package brought it within budget.
The room was huge with 2 ante rooms and a brilliant mosaic bath.
Loved the pool and staff were. Kind fixing us up with alternative transport when the train fell through - the one downside was the over attentive staff.
The fort and jain carvings were out of this world.

When you enter into the hotel gate you get a feeling that you are in an old palace. Soothing surrounding, Excellent restuarant with varieties of food and beverage choices. Taste of food was so good. The chef asks your taste and make sure that the delivered foods really make you feel delicious. Not so expensive. Worth for the money paid. Make you to go again there.

Room Tip: Choose room on the first flloor facing the lawn. May be room no. 204 can be one of the choice

Gwalior does not have many hotels, but there must be places that are better value than this one! OK, you have a lot of staff following you around obsequiously whatever you do, checking your car for bombs (!) etc - but do you really need that? Meanwhile, this was the only place we stayed in India where they hadn't got the reservations right and where we found a dead cockroach in the room. The place is an ecological disaster - AC was on so high in the rooms, we nearly had a thermic shock. Lots of unnecessary trimmings but overall cold and souless. Restaurant totally exhorbitant (3 to 5 times the price you pay elswhere for the same dish) though we saved some money when they forgot to bring part of our order! Meanwhile, the drivers are not given a place to stay, they have to sleep in the cars - not very restful for them and not very reassuring for us, if they have a long drive next day. The palace is a pretty sight, sure, but not a pleasant place to stay. There are better things to spend your money on in India!

Not as opulent as the palaces of Rajasthan that are the jewels in the Taj crown, the Usha Kiran Palace with its oversized rooms is a serene and comfortable sanctuary from the din and hubbub of modern age Gwalior.

It is conveniently located near the Museum and is a short distance from other sites.

However, it is in need of some sprucing up. The furniture is outmoded; the restaurant transports one to the eighties and the menu is extremely limited. They serve Nescafe exclusively, hardly an attempt to cater to the well-heeled, globe trotter who's evolved palate accepts anything but instant coffee. All requests for filter coffee, cappuccino or espresso were responded with blank stares.

Some of their local guests are also lacking in hotel etiquette. On our first stay, family of 5 were swimming in the pool in their underwear while the women took a dip in their sweats and salwar kameezes. The attendant stood by mutely, unaware of his role until he was urged to call the manager who's appearance brought order.

The hotel is very helpful with procuring train tickets and other items from Gwalior. The manager, an amiable fellow, Mr. Tamal Chatterjee, is extremely resourceful, dynamic and more effective than his dormant colleagues.

Despite it's flaws, it is the only place to stay in Gwalior.

I have always been a big fan of Taj for their flawless (almost!) service. This property is no exception. We were there very recently in May '12 on a thee night's sojourn to Gwalior.. It was scorching hot outside (never travel to Gwalior in summers, it's like suicide!). The hotel is not centrally cooled, so you might experience trouble with the air-conditioning - for the first few hours we did, and then it was just fine.

We were staying in The Luxury Suite (bedroom + living) which had a private sit-out and the windows overlooked the lawns - couldn't have asked for more! The suite was incredibly spacious and fairly private. Though the major trouble was the bath tub! ;) coz of external metal pipes that carry water from the tank we had boiling water in the tub in our room when it was already 46 degrees hot outside! it was sorted out asap (took 45+ minutes, while I sat in my bathrobe waiting) thankfully it did not happen again!

That night when we got back from the Light & Sound from The Gwalior Fort a pleasant surprise awaited us: A private candle-lit dinner in our private courtyard + candle lit room + tub full of rose petals! (We were glad that we had trouble with the tub in the noon! ;) ... "It tastes awesome," my beloved said that at-least a dozen times on our trip. We had awesome awesome food! Almost everything we ordered from the menu was flawlessly delicious... If you're somehow there in summers, do request for the "Bael Ka Sharbat" .. They make it from the freshly plucked "Bael (stone apple) Tree" in the hotel premises! Yummy! - Mix it with Vodka: Yummier!! ;)

Check-in & Check-outs were from the room itself - hence very convenient. Do not miss the temple in the hotel premises; it has an interesting story to it! Do spare some time for the hotel tour, it is totally worth it (lots of trivia)! Every single fuss we made was said a very polite yes to! Loved the hospitality! If you're in Gwalior next, this is the place to stay!

Room Tip: Depending on the time of the year you are travelling in, make sure u spend a few minutes discussing...
