“Would love to come back in winter”
Reviewed June 27, 2011

We went in the middle of summer as we couldn't find a place in the hills. Having a one year old in the group, I think we really tested the patience of the staff but they were always helpful and friendly. I would recommend it to anyone. The food is fabulous and really outstanding. My only advice would be to have a few spare swimsuits which one could borrow. Piyush in the staff was especially helpful to us.

We (me, my wife and my one year old daughter) happened to visit this beautiful heritage property over last weekend. I must thank tripadvisor for all the reviews. When we visited this place, we realized how true the reviews were. We are all praise for the staff of this place & cannot stop talking about the wonderful time we had at the palace to all our collegues & friends back here in Mumbai.

Right from the time we arrived at the Usha Kiran palace we were made to feel completely at ease & every single need of ours was looked into very very meticulously & well topped up with a superb personal touch.

A special mention about Jasil, who went all out of the way to show us around the resort & also tell us about the history of the palace & also guide us regarding what to do in Gwalior. It was such a beautiful gesture with the Taj personal touch again:)

The staff in the resturant right from Rakesh, Rajendra, Shashi, Poojam Neha were fantastic. Apologies for forgetting the names of other people. First time I’m remembering names of the staff from any hotel and that speaks volumes about the hospitality of Taj.
They were all extremely efficient & went all out to make us comfortable

We had a wonderful interaction with chef (Rakesh) at dinner, & I'd like to mention that we were treated to a marvallous dinner on his recommendation.

The Spa too was definitely worth a mention which we thoroughly enjoyed.
All the reviews on the internet which mentioned it as memorable was experienced first hand by us.
Somi, Vitole & Narayan were great & ofcourse full marks to your spa manager.

Balbir as well as the other hotel staff were excellent.

The darbans at the entrance of the palace were out with the umbrellas in a jiffy every time we stepped out onto the palace lawns.

It was a pleasure interacting with Neha & Bhavna at the front desk.

My one year daughter was thrilled with all the friendly staff & was not willing to leave the restaurant. After having stayed at the luxious properties across the world, I Would highly recommend this place. Hiltons, Marriots & other international hotels –you can send your trainees here to learn about Indian hospitality.

We were here for a family wedding and had booked almost the entire hotel, so we got very good service oversall. It is a nice quiet hotel property...has good size rooms and bathrooms. They also have a basic fitness centre, their spa services are very good and popular and need to be booked in advance at most times.

Staff is friendly and courteous. If in Gwalior, this is the best hotel to stay in.

Gwalior is the city with rich heritage and history and at Usha Kiran Palace one gets to see this up close. The fact that this was built as a guest house for King of England can give you a glimpse of the grandeur of the place. This has now been converted into a heritage property and is rated amongst the Top 25 heritage hotels in India. The taj service is unquestionable and the hotel and its staff live up the Taj hospitability.
There are only about 40 rooms and suites and villas with a few of them attached with own pool. We had a comfortable room which was large with a separate change room and a large bathroom. The bath tub was not the usual but very royal with tiled bottom and sides. You feel royalty even here.
The courtyards and there are a number of them and each named according to the ambience around like Jasmine court etc offer a lovely, cozy and even romantic feel and can be nostalgic for some of us who grew up in such houses.
The beautifully landscaped garden area (we were told that it was over 9 acres) is a great place to spend the evenings sipping your tea served in the silverware. There is water body in the center (was empty though during our visit)
Once you have soaked yourself into the luxury and are able to get yourself to move out, the imposing Gwalior fort is waiting for one to explore its mysteries, folk tales and rich history. The fort here changed many hands and each period has left its own tale behind. Man Mandir Palace still stands and is a must visit. It takes you to an era goneby and shows the richness of the culture. The evening sound and light show is a must see event and it recreates the history unfolding right in front of you. You would need a day for this.
The tired leg and body after the gruelling fort visit can be relaxed at the Jiva Spa. The rates are most reasonable and the signature treatment with live musician is worth every penny. My wife took the signature massage and still talks about it.
For the kid the temperature controlled swimming pool was the place to be. The place also had badminton courts and TT table.
The Bada bar claims to have a billiard table thats almost 120 years old; almost as old as the palace.
Almost walking distance from the hotel is the Palace of the current Scindia family part of which has been converted into a museum. Go there for the huge Chandeliers and the silver train that was used at the dining table.
Travelling to Gwalior is comfortable and is well connected to Delhi with a host of trains. We took Shatabdi which took about 3 hours of travel time. One can link this to the Delhi-Agra belt and travel onwards to Orchcha, Panna and Khajuraho.

In the unforgiving July heat, we went to Gwalior, of all places, just to stay at Usha Kiran, the regal mansion built by the Scindias exclusively for the king of England in the 19th century. The Taj pampering began the moment we checked in: we were upgraded to a suite that had the stamp of royalty all over. The food is excellent; we chatted up the executive chef and the sous chef and they served us a superlative Nepalese spread. Be sure to take a dip in the pool that has a heritage hangover and trawl the estate's gardens where birds and squirrels and peacocks give you company. The tariff sharply shoots up in winters and the place loses its calm demeanor to a picnic ambiance.
