We've just had ten nights in the Sunrise Pearl and we wished we could have stayed longer. This hotel is an oasis of calm in a busy resort and that is why we picked it. By staying at the Pearl we had peace and quiet but with access to all the activities going on at the Sunrise Beach.
There were a few areas that could be improved -the swimming pools looked beautiful but were too cold for us to swim in, the basins in our bathroom had no plugs to keep the water in and we would have preferred walk-in showers but the hotel is in excellent condition, in a superb location on the sandy beach and the staff are so good we would award them all six stars if we could.
Special praise goes to Stavroula, Suzana and Michael in the restaurant who were absolutely professional but so welcoming that they made us feel like we were with friends. As other reviewers have stated, the drinks are expensive - a bottle of water costs 4 Euros 40 and most wines were over 20 Euros per bottle - but the service is excellent and our glasses were always being topped up by the attentive staff.
The whole hotel, inside and out, is absolutely spotless. Even at this time of year, there are no fallen leaves in the grounds and the lawns and flower beds are well tended. The staff are busy cleaning the outside areas at dawn to ensure the hotel looks its best, and the many glass doors and windows are constantly being polished.
We paid extra for a full seaview room, and the view over the pool and the beach was well worth it. The first few days were very windy so we watched the waves breaking onto the shore, and during the following week when the sea was flat calm we were able to watch people swimming, para-sailing, and lots of boats passing by.
Our room was on the first floor but it was not a suite, it was a double bedroom with a seating area. There was no room divider as in the suites, so we could see the sea from our very large and comfortable bed. We had a small sofa and a very handy fridge and rather than pay the mini-bar prices we bought soft drinks and beer from the nearby Happy Days supermarket. Six 1.5 litre bottles of water were only 1.95 Euros in the supermarket and six small cans of Keo lager were 4 Euros 50.
There is an expanding rail on the balcony to hang wet swimwear on plus two chairs and a small table but the sun left our balcony about 10.30 in the morning. This might be a good thing in summer when you want the room to stay cool but was a shame on these cooler days of autumn. However, the glass panels shielded us from the wind and the view over the pool to the sea was so stunning we just loved sitting there.
For guests like us, who read a lot, there is a cupboard in the part of the Reception area used by Tour Operators where you can swap your books for ones left by other guests. Most of the books are in German, but when we were there last week, there were about 20 English books, mainly for women readers though. At night time there was an outdoors second-hand book stall about five minutes walk away on the main strip, towards the Fig Tree Bay end of the resort. You can also buy new English books in the local shops but they range from 8-12 Euros per book.
The bus stop is about 100 metres away from the Sunrise Pearl and buses go past every 20 minutes or so. We took the 101 towards Paralimni but got off after about 10 minutes at the Golden Coast hotel in Pernera and walked back via the coastal path, and we also took the 102 in the other direction towards Ayia Napa and got off by the Cavo Maris Hotel to walk back along the coastal path from the opposite side. Each of those walks took about 45 minutes and went past gorgeous little sandy bays and rocky headlands and there were plenty of cafes en route.
We also did a longer walk from the Sunrise Pearl all round the coast to Konnos Bay where there is a lovely sandy beach with a taverna. This walk took about an hour and three-quarters but there is a bus stop at the top of the hill above the bay, close to the Grecian Park hotel, so we were able to get a bus back home. Be warned, the buses get very full and sometimes don’t stop as there is no more room aboard. Each bus journey costs 1 Euro 50 when you buy the ticket on the bus.
Do try the icecream from the Patisserie Amelie. It must serve some of the best ice-cream we have ever tasted. The chocolate brownie icecream, the strawberry icecream and the fruits of the forest frozen yoghurt are especially delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant (Marcello’s), but my pizza was a bit disappointing. It looked lovely at first glance, but there were insufficient toppings. We also ate at the Reef restaurant which is situated at the Sunrise Beach hotel, and my husband said his steak was superb. You do have to pay 8 Euros supplement for the steak, but otherwise if you are on Half Board you can swap your evening (buffet) meal at the Pearl for a three course meal at the Reef if you want a change of style. There is a touch-screen machine in the hotel reception to make reservations at the various restaurants and the staff will come over and help you with this if necessary.
We were given a couple of vouchers on check-in, maybe because it was the end of the season or maybe they give out the vouchers throughout the summer, I don’t know. We had vouchers for free drinks at the Verano bar which was interesting with its unusual tent-style roof, but unfortunately there were no other customers. We also had a voucher for 20 Euros towards a spa treatment and I had a lovely facial treatment which was very relaxing. Normal price for that was 80 euros but with the voucher it brought the price down to 60 euros which was still not cheap but it was a very enjoyable end of holiday treat.
Would we recommend this hotel? Absolutely. It was an excellent hotel with superb staff. Not too many children staying there, as families are better catered for at the Sunrise Beach, so perfect for couples seeking relaxation in quality surroundings. We certainly hope to come back here. Thanks to all the staff at the Sunrise Pearl for giving us a very enjoyable holiday. You deserve your ranking on Trip Advisor as the No. 1 hotel in Protaras.
