Lapland Hotel Riekonlinna
Ranked #5 of 6 Hotels in Saariselka
Reviewed January 29, 2014

I stayed at the Hotel Riekonlinna on 1st January for 4 nights with my mother. The location is at the far end of the village (or near-end, depending which way you look it at) but is well placed for access to the shops and tour companies and is the closest hotel for the toboggan run. About 20mins walk from the Supermarket which is fine, but could feel a long way if its -30! Lapland Safaris is on site which is quite use, along with small gift shop, bar and restaurant.
I had read many comments about this being a business hotel. Having travelled significantly for business I have to say I did not feel this at all, it felt very much like a tourist hotel to me. The reception staffs were friendly and very helpful to us as Finnair lost our luggage. They contacted the airline directly for us and gave is regular updates until finally we were reunited with our bags on day two.
The breakfast was included in our rate and we found we were able to eat a decent portion to last us through to mid afternoon, there were hot and cold cereals, waffles, sausages, eggs and bacon as well as cold meats and cheese – all buffet style.
We liked our small room with a sauna which we utilised daily after all the winter activities but I have to say one area of disappointment was the cleaning. Housekeeping didn’t make our beds up and it just seemed that they came in, swept the floor and changed the towels. We should have mentioned this to reception prior to checking out on the last day but didn’t. Other than that we had a nice time at the hotel and I would stay here again, I thought it was good value for money.

Room Tip: I would receommend a superior room with a sauna, they are modern and although on the small side the...

We had booked this hotel as part of a trip to see Santa in Lapland, so were slightly worried by some of the reviews. We needn't have been: the room was gorgeous. More like a small apartment, it had 2 separate bedrooms, a longe/diner/kitchen. We even had our own sauna! It was very clean & cosy. The room was in a block separate to the hotel but the short walk to breakfast etc was great, the kids enjoyed traipsing through the snow. The staff were professional and the food was pretty good, in fact the breakfast was awesome. We booked through Esprit, their reps were great & there whenever you needed them. We had an amazing holiday & would definitely return to this hotel.

We traveled here in dec 13, 4 adults 2 children . The hotel is beautiful from the outside, covered in snow and twinkly lights, really Christmassy. The hotel is a little dated and the rooms a little small as there was the 4 of us in one room but well appointed.. Tea, coffee , big tv with a few English channels, hair dryer and a really handy drying cupboard for your outdoor gear.
The breakfast was good and had a fairly good selection. Dinner was not so good , not very much choice at all . But all very edible. Kids could choose from their own buffet( chicken nuggets and chips)
We sat in the bar area on a few occasions around the log fire which was pleasant.
We traveled with Thompson, who were brilliant. The Thompson elves are brilliant, full of energy and are in character at all times.
We were sooo busy while we were here and came home with brilliant memory's .

We stayed at this hotel over Christmas. Our trip was with Thompsons. Two adults and two children 9yrs and 5yrs. We walked into our room and yes decoration in basic, but it's very clean, comfortable and warm. The food is mostly Finnish and delicious. Drinks are exspensive but in this part of the world they are. Santa Resort was a fab day. We also went taboganning great fun! On Christmas Day we skied we hired our ski equipment at the local resort. We brought a 3hr ski pass which was enough as our children have not skied before. We took the ski bus to the ski resort. At the sky resort is a cafe that serve pizza, ribs etc
We also took a snowmobile excursion to look for the northern lights. My husband and I went on the snowmobile while the kids went in the sleigh. We really enjoyed ourselves. My advice would be to take hand and feet warmers, plenty of layers. Take snacks for the kids high energy ones chocolate etc. please go a amazing experience.

If you want to discover Lapland, Saariselkä is a good point to start and the Riekonlinna a good place to stay. We enjoyed our private sauna and the views from our balcony. The staff was also very friendly and the food in the restaurant is very good, although not cheap. Since we spent new years' eve at that place, we could also enjoy the savory dinner buffet! It was excellent.

We went on the thomson trip 22nd dec-26th dec and had the best holiday ever. Me my partner and our two children aged 9 and 6. The all in one suits are fantastic that they give you to wear and we hardly felt the cold. The food in the hotel was ok, we always found something to eat. My eldest boy is a very fussy eater and he always ate something. The holiday was such a experience from the thomson reps picking us up and the elves on the coach. They get u to sing and have loads of fun. Cranberry the elf was a absolute star. My kids loved her. She was so happy all the time and loved singing 'when santa got stuck up the chimney'. She deserves a medal bless her.

The santa trip is fantastic, you try reindeer and husky rides. Mini skidoos for kids, ice hockey, artic circle, and visit father christmas on sleighs which is absolutely fantastic. My son started giving santa a big list of what he wanted haha.

We booked on the elf adventure which was quite expensive at £250 but was wprth every penny because like I said before the elves are amazing. We did tobagganning, ice fishing, snow walking, skiing and toasted marshmallows round a fire and had warm berry juice which is really nice. We also cut a christmas tree down and decorated it which my boys loved.

A big shout out goes out to the entertainment team they were absolutely amazing day and night! Koko and jingle bell bazz. They always had time to come and sit with us and have a chat and was just fantastic with the kids. We've been loads of places and this was definately the best place for the kids and beat entertainment we have known thanks to koko and bazz.

An amazing holiday we will never ever forget :)

We went with Thomson for the Christmas trip (22nd - 26th Dec). The hotel we ok for us 2 adults and a 8 year old. We had a twin room with a put up bed for the 8 year old. The room had a balcony, sauna and drying cupboard. Yes the room and hotel could have been posher but we don't go on holiday for the hotel. We paid extra for full board and as someone who is very fussy I always found something to eat. There was a great variety. I do not know why we had to have the Gala dinner the idea was nice but not practical, normal night were better. We did a couple of the excursions but did not book these through Thomson, before we left the UK we contacted Husky & Co, who we found on the Saariselka websiteand can recommend the 4-5 hour Husky trip and 2 hour snowmobile ride. Lovely memories made for our 8 year old.
