“Warm place in a frozen land”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

I've been there twice - once before I left to the north sea, and once again on my way back. In both times the hotel was great - the rooms are big and clean, the food is really great (the salads were surprisingly fantastic!) and the place itself is warm, in contrary to the freezing outside. Needless to say, the service is top level.

Wish to be there again!

Room Tip: chooses a room with a window to the north, so you can see at night time if the northern lights are o...

We were in Saariselka for one week, and had a terrific experience.
The hotel was in a great location for us. It was only a few minutes walk to the XC ski trails, the downhill ski hill, the tobogganing hill, restaurants, and the local grocery store.

I saw in some previous reviews that the breakfast buffet was "not a gourmet experience", but we found it was fine. there was alway an array of choices to fit many palates (scrambled eggs/bacon/ beans, cold meats/cheeses/good freshly baked breads, cold cereals/oatmeal/yogurt/fruit, smoked fish/pickled vegetables, even miso soup & rice for the Japanese guests).
Dinner menu was small, but the choices were all well prepared and quite enjoyable.

You have to keep in perspective the fact that you are hundreds of Kilometers above the arctic circle in a small village, not in the middle of a major European city.

The Hotel Riekonlinna staff were very helpful in getting all the necessary details arranged for our "safari" outings [dogsledding and a night time reindeer-sleigh tour] and coordinated our rental ski equipment with a local provider.
They also took care of arranging all of our local transportation (including airport shuttles) and helped make some wonderful evening dinner recommendations & reservations (all of which were very positive experiences). The staff proved itself to be both knowledgeable and capable throughout, giving good advice about the best times and places to enjoy our activities (avoiding crowds and having the best experiences).

The rooms were clean and were straightened up daily. Beds were a bit soft for my taste, but not uncomfortable. The buildings were quiet - completely full, yet unless you actually saw people, you were unaware there was anyone else on the floor.

Overall I would be quite happy to stay there again.

Room Tip: their chalets/apartments were great with a simple but well equipped kitchen to help keep the little...

Stayed here whilst driving with Porsche on the fabulous Ice Force Training, Everything was great, very nice hotel with plenty of variety in the food and drink. The staff were very helpful at all times and the room was well equipped with all essentials and a lovely TV and mini bar. The only thing that could really improve that I saw was the Northern Lights viewing room, this was very average bordering on being a waste of time. As the viewing windows had a roof in front of them and the hotel lights outside the windows reflected back and made it too light in the room. Otherwise everything was good.

The hotel is old, and if you get a triple sharing room, means your essentially sleeping on a folded out couch. I had a room on the first level (159), and then one on the second level (200). Room on the first level was smaller, and the bed thin and tired. Shower stall was tiny, and water would leak out the stall and soak the floor. Room on the second level was more generous, but didn't have a shower stall. When you showered, the entire place would get drenched. There's a skinny balcony outside the rooms, and once you get tired of the snow piling up outside, there's also a handy shovel for you to clear it off.

Buffet wise, the food was ok. They neither starve nor pamper you, but the breakfasts (scrambled eggs, bacon, baked beans, cocktail sausages) get tiresome after the third day.

Room Tip: The aurora borealis viewing room is on level 2.

This made a perfectly serviceable base in Saariselka. The rooms were clean and of a good size. All the rooms seemed to have balconies, there was a viewing room to see the Northen lights and the excursion centre is inside the hotel which is very convenient. On the downside the hotel feels slightly shabby, in need of a lick of paint and few new showers - more motel than hotel . However one saving grace were the Reception staff , who I found extremely helpful.

I stayed at this hotel on two separate occasions. First I had just the standard room and then I spent 2 days (incl. the night between) in the wilderness. Then I came back and had a room with en suite sauna. I knew I would be freezing after having spent the whole day in -25'C temperatures so booking room with your own sauna is a good choice. The tourists at the hotel seemed to come mostly from England, Japan, France and Russia. I didn't use the restaurant nor the public areas so I cannot assess them. Breakfast was good though.

The room and hotel was clean, nicely kept, with great breakfast. The bed mattress, however, was not that comfortable. The best part of the room was that we had our own Sauna, especially after spending the day in the freezing weather outside!

The hotel is quite long, and our room was towards the end of the hotel, so we had to walk far on the corridors. But the location is great. Saariselka is a small place and this hotel is located in the middle of the 'center' and the ski slopes.

Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a room with a Sauna!
