We visited Irvins for the first time tonight. The food is quite expensive but worth it as it was delicious, we both had fish dishes and couldn't fault them. The service didn't match the food though. We waited over an hour for our food to arrive. We ordered a bottle of water and weren't given any glasses, then we ordered a beer and a glass of wine which were forgotten about. The service wasn't dreadful but we did feel we were forgotten about and when you're paying a lot of money and the restaurant isn't too busy, you do expect better service.

Irvins is the type of place that you go to because you know the food will be good. The menu varies regularly enough for it to be different if you go every couple of months; the seafood selection is always great - which is wonderful when you're on the Fish Quay and you fancy something very fresh! - and the service is excellent.
I would recommend this restaurant if you're looking for somewhere for a special occasion, but it's also just superb at any time. We've been for a Sunday lunch, in the evening with friends, and during the day for a coffee and snack. It's always been good whenever we've visited and the service has always been excellent whatever the time of day. Highly recommended!

A quick trip last week to treat ourselves at Irvins, surely the best restaurant east of Newcastle [and probably as good as any west as well]

This time just the breadboard to start - but what a breadboard it is with 4 different types of home backed bread.

Then main-course pig's cheeks for Celia - yes I know it sounds yucky but it is a classic Belgian dish which is simply delicious and Irvins chefs produced it exactly as it should be - simply delicious. It may have been improved with a pile of silverskin onions [as they do it in Ypres] but I'm not sure.

For me the other masterpiece of the day was the slow-cooked belly pork - now forget that horrible greasy chewy stuff your mum used to cook at the end of the month when the pay cheque ran out - this is a sensational flavour filled experience. It's strange. we hardly ever have pork at home yet both of us chose it here and what a great choice it was.

Too full for desert - not that you get loads but the tastes are so great you don't need huge mounds.

The service at Irvins used to be poor but they have really turned it around now and I couldn't fault anything about the night except the weather

I must have been to Irvins over 10 times now and every time has been a winner. From the 2 courses for £10, to the full menu, there is something there for everyone. This is a relaxed, laid back restaurant and the food is probably the nicest that i have had. I do agree that it is a little gem hidden in North Shileds. Love it!!!

Do not be put off by the very few extreme reviews and take note of the true customers' advocacy. I have been there on different nights for different purposes and the food is always great. The atmosphere is professional but relaxed and the manager first class. Interesting building in an area that is unique
