“Fantastic location”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

We stayed for two nights at Sossus Dune Lodge, and could not have been happier with the location. The accommodation was attractive, with private thatched lodges along a wooden pathway, each with 180 degree windows, and the view from the lodge over the desert was extraordinary, particularly when lit by the full moon. However, we were in one of the far end lodges and it feels a real hike in the heat of the day. You certainly didn't want to do the walk any more often than necessary. Food was ok, service was slow but we didn't mind too much at dinner as we were just looking at the views.

We spent two nights at Sossus Dune Lodge.

We had been warned by our travel company in the UK that although this lodge has the best location, we might be a bit let down by food and service (due to the lodge being run by NWR and not privately). Unfortunately, this did turn out to be the case.

The good:
The best location: being inside the park gates means that you get a head start and can be the first to the dunes in the morning, and even in time for sunrise. When we went there, we were the first to climb Big Daddy at Dead Vlei...making for some pretty special photos.
The room: very generously sized and with a great view across the plains...great at sunset. Each room feels very private with its own verandah.
The friendliness of the waiting staff.

The bad & ugly:
Lack of air conditioning in the room is a real problem. With the temperature nearing 40 degrees during our stay, most guests return to the lodge to escape the heat in the middle of the day. Not possible when your room is like a sauna, with very little air movement. The fan in the room just pushed hot air around.
The food: generally tasty but not high quality, and main courses often came out all but cold. The breakfast selection was the smallest of any place we stayed in Namibia, despite this being the largest lodge we stayed at. Also issues with capability in the kitchen, perhaps: having ordered two boiled eggs for breakfast and asking for them to be cooked for five minutes each, one was hardboiled while the other was raw.
The timeliness of service: service was absolutely terrible. So slow. We don't place the responsibility for this with the waiters who tried their best. There were simply too few of them, and food was so slow to come out of the kitchen. On both nights, the second round of drinks we ordered with our dinner failed to turn up. Similarly at checkout, it took nearly half an hour for someone to bring our cases from our room up to reception. A young lady called Sonia, who we think was a management trainee and was friendly and helpful, was run off her feet: she seemed to be the only person able to check out rooms, take payments etc.

Our summary of Sossus Dune Lodge is that the location couldn't be better- the foundations are there for an amazing Sossusvlei experience, but the whole place is let down by a lack of leadership and management resulting in awful customer service.

Our stay here, overall, was very good but it was a rollercoaster ride - at times horrible, at times excellent. We had been having trouble with NWR throughout our whole trip to Namibia. They just botched the whole thing from beginning to end so we weren't terribly surprised to be greeted at Sossus with a "you didn't pay your Dolomite bill" even though we had paid in full 4 months previously and the issue had been sorted. The staff were nice about it but GEEEZZZZ... The lodge itself is lovely and the staff did their best to make it a good stay. The rooms are very spacious - big enough that they could add 2 more single beds for our kids and we could still all move around comfortably. The view from the balcony was great. The boys enjoyed the swimming pool and we all really did enjoy our stay. The food was good, but not great though plentiful. The prices, however, are brutally expensive. We paid the equivalent of 7 days accommodation for 1 night's stay for the 4 of us for one reason only: to see sunrise on the dunes. So we drove out to the 2x parking lot the day we arrived, checked with a few people to see when the first shuttle was (6:45 am) and checked in at Sossus. That night at dinner we again confirmed that a shuttle would be there at 6:45 and got up the next morning at 5 am to make the drive out. So you can imagine that we were pretty angry when the shuttle didn't arrive until 7:15 and we had to watch the sunrise from the parking lot. We were, in fact, furious. So when we returned to the lodge we demanded the manager and explained the issue. We were told that, because it was Sunday, there was nothing she could do. We said that it wasn't our fault and that we either wanted a full refund or another night's stay for free so that we could see the sunrise on the dunes, which is what we paid for. Lucky for us there was a regional manager on site that was showing around a group of special guests. When he heard what happened, he said that he would make it happen and gave us another night's accommodation. Then he also arranged for us to have an evening trip to Elim to watch the sunset and a guided tour the next morning at Sossusvlei to see the sunrise. We had the same guide, Paul, for both trips and he was fabulous. So, in the end, we got the experience we paid for. But not until we had to be temperamental and nasty tourists. NWR - sigh - it has been quite a trial!

If you planning to see some magnificent Dunes, this lodge is a must. It is simply a magical place, with perfect sunrises-a picture perfect setting.
The food was OK and the bedrooms spacious and comfortable.

The lodge is magic, we had chalets nr 24 and honey-moon nr 25; great location far from everybody and amazing sunset from the veranda.
Make sure that you don't get the chalets in front of the little mountain.
Clean rooms. Efficient room-service. Good food.
Unsatisfactory staff, especially Mr Armstrong: very very very friendly at the arrival, when he tries to sell you any kind of activity; literally disappeared when he understood that we weren't interested in buying anything. We knew where to go, but they didn't give us anything, no map of the dunes area, no indications, but above all, they knew that when it's windy at the lodge, it is almost impossible to climb the Bid Daddy dune.....is was very windy, but no one gave us this hint (just when we came back to the lodge we were informed about that).
However it is absolutely easy to self-drive from the lodge to the dunes and then decide wether to park at the 2x4 parking and take a shuttle or keep on driving (only with a 4x4) until Dead Vlei and/or Sossusvlei. We did it on our own and were happy with that, since we have been free to stay the time we wanted in the different areas.
As I said the lodge is a little treasure, but I don't know if I would go back again; the personnel attitude destroyed that kind of magic and the price is very high.

Ive always wanted to see the dunes in Namibia at sunrise. The location of the dune lodge makes it first choice. perhaps not the flshest of hotels, it was clean comfortable and superbly located Plenty of room, comfortable beds, and food was ok most of the time. Early morning trip to see the dunes at sunrise was great. well managed and fantastic to be in such a small party before the rush. We had a 4x4 vehicle, and I had to persuade my husband not to drive us to the dunes at sunrise. He was delighted to have agreed when we saw the state of the sand roads, and the abandoned cars on the way back. Perhaps if you are used to it then have a go, but the pleasure of someone else taking the lead, and getting you to the right spot at the right time was immense. Also.... one of those surreal moments..... We had breakfast provided and were offered a choice of chilled or sparkling water... in a desert, at sunrise.. along with yogurt, cereal, muffin, coffee, etc Wow! Our guide Paul was knowledgeable and very informative, helping us to spot wildlife and flora. If you are only there for a short time, the sunrise trip is worth it
.The hotel organisation is less impressive. Trying to check out for a long drive back to the airport was not short of crazy. We were packed and ready at seven am, but trying to pay the bill from the previous day [because of a power cut] took far too long, and we eventually left at 7.45 am They need to get their act together.
The only other comment is that they need to put more comfortable chairs on the verandahs to the rooms. Those there become painful after a short spell. Rooms are hot, but hey its the desert. Shower and water supply good. Bring a hand torch it helps a lot. All the rooms have good views, but dont go for 2 or 3. there is a small rock hill in front which obscures you horizon. Otherwise the further out, the longer the walk. Would I go again.... Ummm difficult. Ideal location, and reasonable standard, so yes, but not five star if thats what your looking for.The views are worth it. Magical..... Oh and very hot during the day and cold at night. Take a puffa and socks!

Room Tip: Dont go for chalets 2 or 3, any others are great. All hot in the day!
