Hoodia Desert Lodge

We were welcomed with damp cool flannels to remove the dust & a cool fruit drink which was very pleasant after a long hot dusty drive. I'm not sure I can fault anything about our stay at Hoodie. The staff were lovely, the owner dashed across to welcome us ,fabulous location, bird life amazing, the odd warthog, Kudu not to mention the small herd of springbok always in view. The guided tour ( Angula, exceptionally knowledgeable & really nice guy ) into Soussesvlei was incredible, dining under a large acacia on white linen with a fabulous spread and not another human in sight a very rare treat. Rooms lovely, outside shower & bath, brilliant. Food, not easy so far from anywhere, very acceptable but would have liked some much lighter options.

We used this as a base to visit the sand dunes at Sossusvlei and while the dunes were a bit of a drive it was perfectly doable. The accommodation in the form of rondavels was very comfortable and cool even though the morning we arrived was incredibly windy and very hot. This lodge was exceptionally well run and the attention to detail impressive. The food was excellent and a nice touch was provided by a very creative lady in the restaurant who folded napkins into a variety of animals! Highly recommended.

Hoodia Desert Lodge had the most welcoming staff of anywhere we stayed on our 24 day Namibian adventure! Truly first class. The lodge is lovely, the food good and the sundowner trip was perfect, a beautiful spot and drinks and snacks were perfectly presented--not to be missed! Highly recommended!

This is a really lovely lodge run under the personal and attentive care of the owners. Beautifully situated in the desert, about 7km from the road. Very convenient for Sossusvlei and the dunes. The accommodation is in individual chalets which are excellent, with indoor and outdoor bathrooms. Towels, which let down so many otherwise good places, are first-class. Public rooms are very stylish and, along with everything else at Hoodia, beautifully kept. Food is good without being outstanding and nicely presented. Dinner begins according to 'African time' where the rule of thumb is that it is 7pm whenever it is served, even if that is 7.30! We stayed at 13 places during our month-long trip and this was one of the very best. An excellent choice and recommended.

Room Tip: The chalets furthest from the central public area are quite a long walk on the sandy paths.

The friendliest of welcomes await at Hoodia, this is really what makes the stay here. The lodge is only a 30 minute drive to the park gates. Food is good. The excursion to Sossusvlei is highly recommended but alternatively very easy to do by oneself with a picnic from the lodge.

This place is a gem. Stunning setting, incredibly friendly owners ( present ) and staff.
Private comfortable chalet style rooms with amazing semi-outdoor bath/shower.
We are sorry we couldn't stay longer and hike in the Naucluft Moutains as others have mentioned. There is really no need to try and stay closer to Sossusvlei, we did and it paled in comparison ( Sossus Dune Lodge).
Angoola took us on a tour of the dunes and he was fantastic, he has so much knowledge and his skill at seeking out wildlife was unbeaten by any other guide we had in Namibia or South Africa.
The owners, as well as being friendly went out of their way to help us with a hire car issue and managed a car exchange for us while we were out for the day.
We also had the sun-downer atop one of the nearby hills - this was absolutely spectacular. The changing colours of the scenery while sipping a cold Windhoek and nibbling delicious snacks.
We were so sorry to leave.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at Hoodia and the excursions that we organised through the Lodge. We arrived after a hard 6 hour drive to a wonderfully friendly welcome and informative tour around the lodge. Lots of other reviews mention how attentive the owners are however they were not on site during our stay but that didn’t matter because the service we received from Angoola and his team was warm, efficient and professional throughout.

The rooms are comfortable with an amazingly comfortable bed with Egyptian cotton bed linen and duck down duvet and pillows. The isolation of the individual lodges gives you a sense of peace and a great way to enjoy the setting sun on the small porch area at the front of the lodge. Unfortunately it can get very windy in the desert at night and we were kept awake two nights by the howling wind which made the lodge creak and vibrate to the point that we thought the roof was going to come off! Everyone was talking about the wind at breakfast including the staff!

The main lodge itself has a comfortable and stylish lounge with plenty of books on Namibia to look at in the evening. There is a very small swimming pool for guests and a terrace out the back overlooking the hills where we sat in the late afternoon enjoying the peace and quiet and a cold beer. You can get good Wi-Fi reception in the lounge/bar but the minute you walk out to the terrace it is gone!

The food was very good. You had a couple of choices for starter and main, although on our third night we were offered the same choices of main as the first night so my guess is that as most guests only stay for 2 nights the menu is simply repeated every two days. Not that it mattered. The food was piping hot, tasty and with plenty of vegetables and rice. The choice of wine was good and the service throughout dinner impeccable.

We did the dunes tour and a hike in the Namib Naukluft Mountains with Angoola. He is very knowledgeable and the perfect host. For coffee break and lunch you are treated to a posh picnic- a table with table cloth and runner is laid out, with crockery and cutlery and a delicious lunch of salad, pasta, and meat is served, along with drinks. You are even offered the opportunity to wash and moisturise your hands in a make shift basin. The lunch experience on the tours was totally unexpected and a wonderful experience. Both tours were informative and thoroughly enjoyable.

I’d like to thank the team at Hoodia for their hospitality and in making this our best lodging experience in Namibia.
