Hoodia Desert Lodge

This place is a gem. Stunning setting, incredibly friendly owners ( present ) and staff.
Private comfortable chalet style rooms with amazing semi-outdoor bath/shower.
We are sorry we couldn't stay longer and hike in the Naucluft Moutains as others have mentioned. There is really no need to try and stay closer to Sossusvlei, we did and it paled in comparison ( Sossus Dune Lodge).
Angoola took us on a tour of the dunes and he was fantastic, he has so much knowledge and his skill at seeking out wildlife was unbeaten by any other guide we had in Namibia or South Africa.
The owners, as well as being friendly went out of their way to help us with a hire car issue and managed a car exchange for us while we were out for the day.
We also had the sun-downer atop one of the nearby hills - this was absolutely spectacular. The changing colours of the scenery while sipping a cold Windhoek and nibbling delicious snacks.
We were so sorry to leave.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at Hoodia and the excursions that we organised through the Lodge. We arrived after a hard 6 hour drive to a wonderfully friendly welcome and informative tour around the lodge. Lots of other reviews mention how attentive the owners are however they were not on site during our stay but that didn’t matter because the service we received from Angoola and his team was warm, efficient and professional throughout.

The rooms are comfortable with an amazingly comfortable bed with Egyptian cotton bed linen and duck down duvet and pillows. The isolation of the individual lodges gives you a sense of peace and a great way to enjoy the setting sun on the small porch area at the front of the lodge. Unfortunately it can get very windy in the desert at night and we were kept awake two nights by the howling wind which made the lodge creak and vibrate to the point that we thought the roof was going to come off! Everyone was talking about the wind at breakfast including the staff!

The main lodge itself has a comfortable and stylish lounge with plenty of books on Namibia to look at in the evening. There is a very small swimming pool for guests and a terrace out the back overlooking the hills where we sat in the late afternoon enjoying the peace and quiet and a cold beer. You can get good Wi-Fi reception in the lounge/bar but the minute you walk out to the terrace it is gone!

The food was very good. You had a couple of choices for starter and main, although on our third night we were offered the same choices of main as the first night so my guess is that as most guests only stay for 2 nights the menu is simply repeated every two days. Not that it mattered. The food was piping hot, tasty and with plenty of vegetables and rice. The choice of wine was good and the service throughout dinner impeccable.

We did the dunes tour and a hike in the Namib Naukluft Mountains with Angoola. He is very knowledgeable and the perfect host. For coffee break and lunch you are treated to a posh picnic- a table with table cloth and runner is laid out, with crockery and cutlery and a delicious lunch of salad, pasta, and meat is served, along with drinks. You are even offered the opportunity to wash and moisturise your hands in a make shift basin. The lunch experience on the tours was totally unexpected and a wonderful experience. Both tours were informative and thoroughly enjoyable.

I’d like to thank the team at Hoodia for their hospitality and in making this our best lodging experience in Namibia.

The warmest of welcomes - it really shows when the owners live on site. Hats off to you both. We were booked here because the travel agent could not get us into the first choice. Am I glad for that. It may be a little further from the entrance to Sossusvlei but I would happily drive the extra kilometres for the pleasure of staying here.

Chalets were super comfortable, spotless, well serviced and in a stunningly quiet location in the middle of nowhere. Lounge and bar area super comfortable with a nice fire and plenty of reference books. Laundry service was efficient and reasonably priced which is most welcome if you have been away for some time.

Food was superb, easily the best of our trip and I want the recipe for that home made bread! Vegetarians (advise in advance) will be very pleasantly surprised.

One of the highlights was a walk in the Naukluft park with Petrus. An excellent day out with a knowledgeable guide and a new way to see wildlife without sitting in the back of a truck - and the picnic lunch was excellent!

Our group of 4 (2 couples) thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay at this incredible Oasis. Hoodia Desert Lodge serves as an ideal introduction to this amazing part of Namibia (Sossus Vlei and Sesrium Canyon). When it comes to hospitality, tranquility, comfort, amenities, and attention to detail, Thomas and his staff maintain an exceptionally high standard from start to finish. We were greeted warmly by staff upon arrival, given delicious ice cold tea and cool towels to wipe off the desert grime. Our bungalows were excellent; very spacious, beautifully designed and impeccably maintained. Incredible bath, with indoor/outdoor shower. We loved our large veranda, so perfectly situated to take maximum advantage of the breathtaking panoramic desert and mountain views. The lodge itself is an architectural masterpiece; exquisitely furnished and filled with amazing African art and décor. The cuisine and service uniformly exceptional; we particularly enjoyed the variety of very fresh homemade breads and pastries, cooked-to-order omelets, and choice of dinner entrees. Thomas proved to be is an excellent manager and an incredibly gracious and engaging host. He went way out of his way to ensure the highest level of comfort and enjoyment for each and every guest. He truly knows and loves Namibia, and provided us many invaluable insights and recommendations. When he found out we were heading next to Swakopmund, he personally called to secure us a last-minute dinner reservation at a wonderful restaurant. When one of our party left their jacket behind in the bungalow, Thomas thoughtfully arranged for it to be delivered to us at our lodging in Swakopmund the very next night. Hoodia Lodge has more than earned all the rave reviews it has received. We give it our very highest recommendation and look forward to our return.

I can only repeat what all the other reviews say. Excellent attentive service, magnificent location, lovely rooms. Thomas is a very enthusiastic manager/owner. Our trip to the dunes was well organized, we were lucky in that it was only us, another couple might have spoilt the experience. My only surprise was that there was no choice of food, for us it worked out for others I can see this might be a problem. I would certainly recommend Hoodia to others.

Hoolia Lodge was the perfect place to stay for my visit to Sossusvlei. As other reviewers have mentioned, Thomas is a wonderful host and clearly passionate about what he does - from greeting me on my arrival to providing wonderful recommendations on my travels around Namibia. The villas are nicely appointed and the scenery breathtaking. Thank you Thomas for a wonderful visit.
