“If you like history, culture and heritage, Mahasthangarh is the place for you”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

I've been there couple of times and always I discovered something different. There are many attractions in one place altogether and they all have their interesting myths and stories. For example, Shila Devi's Ghat is a place where Shila Devi, daughter (some sources said sister) of the then ruling king, committed suicide when the city was attacked by the Muslim leaders who eventually conquered it. This is just an example, you'll find many such stories associated with each place in Mahasthangarh. I'd recommend you to search the web first and gather relevant information before visiting this amazing historical location in Bangladesh.

“Ruins steeped in history”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

Mahasthangarh is about 200 km from Dhaka City - via Bogora town(apx 25km from Bogora, just off the Bogora-Rangpur highway). "Garh" means fort - and the ruins are supposed to be the remains of the oldest known fortified city in Bengal - dating back to 3rd century BC and in use upto the 18th century. Unfortunately, the ruins are scattered over a vast area - with no proper map or guides to help you locate them. We wandered around and finally got some direction from an ancient map in the Museum located there plus help from the staff there(who are not allowed to move out and act as guides). You need some conveyance to be able to visit the places. We found remnants of the fort, a mosque/mazar and Govinda Vita near the museum, two excavated Vihars about 20km away and the biggest structure - Behular basor ghar - in another direction about 7/8 km away. Its worthwhile to visit all the sites, but be ready for walk/climbs and un-metalled roads. Took us almost 3 hrs to cover this much and we were told there are many such ruins in the area.

“A place having historical importance”
Reviewed April 19, 2014 via mobile

I found this place having a lot of histories. An ancient city, the famous mosque and well of life, the meusium and govindavita contains a great value to express itself a place to visit. Still can see some sign of well decorated ancient city.

“Birthplace of Bangladesh”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

Anybody who is interested to see the birthplace of Bangladesh, I would encourage to visit the place. Although its mostly ruins here now but its fascinating to see and visualize the fact that once there was buildings and people now there is only ruins. There is a museum right across the road which I would recommend to visit. Museum has some nice artifacts. Overall highly recommended to visit.
