We have just returned from a stay in the West Country - Chard - good location to access the coast and as we were antique hunting and visiting friends was a great place to base ourselves, we stayed in this charming guest house located at the top of the town , no problem parking!, Jerry and Liney who own it were most welcoming and warm hosts very knowledable about the area pointing us in the right direction during the day and where to take a meal in the evening, our room (4) was spacious and well appointed , breakfast was excellent with local good qulaity sausages and bacon, we look forwrad to returning in the autum

We just returned from a 4-night stay at the Ammonite and have had a really enjoyable stay. I can't praise Caroline and Jeremy (the owners) enough for making us feel so welcome, and for all their help and advice in recommending places to eat and visit. The room we had wasn't ensuite but it did have it's own private bathroom across the hall so that was ok, although I think next time we probably would try and get an ensuite as our room was a little on the cosy side. However the breakfast was fantastic, cooked to order by Jeremy every morning, with yummy homemade jam also available for your toast!

The only slight drawbacks were a) the parking at the back of the lodge was quite tight (you have to navigate a pretty narrow passageway to get to it - mind your wing mirrors!) and 2) chard itself as a town isn't very much to write home about, it seemed pretty deserted of an evening and although it has some nice architecture didn't seem to offer great going-out possibilities. We dud try a couple if the pubs but found them pretty empty and with not much atmosphere sadly.

However having said that Chard made a great base for touring Somerset and Dorset, and we managed to pack a lot into our four days' stay. And as I said, Caroline and Jeremy were absolutely wonderful hosts so we would certainly consider staying there again!

We took 3 rooms in this guest house to overnight whilst attending a wedding in the area.
We were very pleased with the quality and comfort of the facilities and our stay here. The hosts, Jeremy & Caroline, were extremely welcoming and obliging and could not have been more helpful. The bedrooms were all excellent, clean and well equipped, comfortable and quiet. Guest areas and garden likewise. Breakfast was very good.
We'd have no hesitation in recommending the Ammonite to anyone looking to stay in the area and hope that their hard work and high standards are rewarded by good business.

Stayed here while attending a friend's wedding and was very impressed. Caroline & Jeremy, the proprietors, went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, while being friendly and warm throughout - even managing to cater for me and my partner when circumstances forced us to extend our stay at the very last minute. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the English breakfast was excellent. We had a lovely time staying here and would definitely book this place again if we're ever staying in the area again.

We found this B & B on the Internet and what a find! We had a lovely friendly welcome from Jeremy and Caroline, the room and en-suite facilities were spotless, and the room overlooked a beautiful and tranquil garden, which was a delight to sit in. We were able to park our car off the main street which was a real bonus. There was a delightful sitting room with television, books and lovely comfortable chairs. Breakfast was fantastic with plenty to eat, and lovely bright and cheerful dining room. Jeremy was very helpful in suggesting somewhere to eat, and Chan's Chinese restaurant does great food, one of the best we have tasted. We were only staying the one night, as we were visiting the nearby Wildlife Park for a zoo experience for my birthday, but value for money was also excellent, and we would certainly recommend Ammonite Lodge for either a short or long stay.

If you come across this hotel on the late rooms’ website and think that at those rates it can’t be any good then think again!!

A friend and I had a very enjoyable overnight stay here on the way down to Cornwall. David and Allison are wonderful hosts – very friendly and knowledgeable.

We stayed in the two single rooms which are at the end of the hall (don't worry there is a fire exit!!). One room is on the first floor and there are a few steps down to the other so we had that part of the house to ourselves. The rooms were very clean and had a TV, clock radio, hairdryer, tea & coffee, etc. And a nice cosy duvet (=comforter?)... The downstairs room is slightly larger and has an en-suite shower room and the upstairs room has its own private bathroom almost next door – there are a couple of steps but it is well lit at night. Both rooms overlook the delightful enclosed garden.

At £35 per room for bed and a delicious breakfast it is excellent value.

The guest house is right on Chard High Street opposite the museum but the bedrooms are at the back and so no traffic noise. There is private parking down a VERY narrow driveway beside the hotel – we were in a Ford Focus and it was extremely tight! Once you get there the parking spaces were a reasonable size.

There are a few places to eat in the High Street within easy walking distance including a W-----spoons - a chain which UK visitors will already have their own view about! Despite being pre-packaged, the food was actually pretty tasty and if you are on a budget you could do a lot worse.

Although it was July it wasn’t warm enough to be out in Ammonite’s garden so we sat in the very cosy guest lounge which has a TV, books and magazines. As suggested on their website we bought a bottle of wine at a supermarket down the road. We had to disturb David and Allison to ask them to uncork it and provide us with glasses which they did with very good grace and humour.

Chard is a convenient place to stay if you are touring the area as it is just off the A303 - the more scenic route down to the West Country from London. (Stonehenge is on the A303, about 60 miles to the east). Within a few miles is the “Jurassic Coast”, including the world-famous resort of Lyme Regis. Forde Abbey – well worth a visit if you like gardens – is about 10 minutes’ drive away.

Downsides? Well, not much! The pipes clonked a bit when you turned on the taps or flushed the loo, the hot water took a few minutes to reach the downstairs room and the water pressure in the shower won’t knock you over! But that’s about all I can think of…

Anyway, thanks for reading this far and - wherever you decide to go - have a great trip!
