“not what was advertised”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

Should be still there but do not believe what they advertised so say soul and motown weekend,Friday night line dancing then in house entertainment no soul no motown.then a very poor comedian bad .that night partner ill through something she ate.So next morning asked for room service got charged for breakfast again ?do not mind paying for service but food i had already paid for that.sat night same again except no comedian avery poor tribute band.If you want a 2 stroke 3 star hotel full of retired people then fine if you want what you pay for a lively themed weekend go else where.I have not stayed for the last night food will be the same average entertainment very poor.As i have left a day early they might charge me for that

Our fourth stay at this Warner hotel. We had a Signature room which was warm and comfortable with flat screen TV and DVD player. Not that these were needed much as there were so many activities available by day and in the evenings, that there was not much time left to just sit in our room. The food was both self service and waiter served and there was plenty of choice. The standard of cooking was excellent with no overcooked vegetables which is quite common in hotel food. The entertainment team were very professional and the comedy act was hilarious. This was a Turkey and Tinsel Christmas type of break and not for those wanting sedate entertainment. All in all a great 5 days (4 nights) and good value for money.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a Signature room

Stayed at Cricket for a weekend in a signature room.
The hotel and grounds are truly stunning.
The main building is very impressive but the newer bit where we were staying is also of a very good standard.
Check in was fast and hassle free.
Our room opened onto a lovely courtyard / gardens and we had the added luxury of a table and chairs. Even in winter ( Oct ) it was nice to sit out for a few moments with a coffee.
The room we had was a twin, beds were VERY comfy and the room was a nice generous size.
The bathroom was shower only, again the bathroom was a good size and was spotlessly clean.
Amenities in the room included, TV and DVD player, hair dryer, kettle with Tea, coffee and hot chocolate, toiletries were provided in the bathroom and a small fridge / mini bar was great for keeping our drinks chilled.
Evening meal and breakfast were both good, the salmon was cooked to perfection and another highlight for me was the cheese selection with numerous, pickles and relish. Service in the restaurant and right through the hotel was great. We did also enjoy Lunch in the main house, soup and sandwich which were both lovely.
The hotel has 2 gift type shops which also sell newspapers, soft drinks etc also around the hotel are vending machines for drinks and confectionary.
We enjoyed a great look around the lakes and grounds which were stunning !
Entertainment was the highlight for us, the entertainment team worked non stop and the " shows " each evening were fantastic. There were activities throughout the day to suit everyone, Nordic walking, wine tasting, Pilates just to name a few. The hotel also has a fantastic leisure club with swimming pool and cardio equipment.
This was my 1st time at a Warner hotel but it will not be my last !

Mywife and I decided to take an autumn break and choise a Signature room in the Walled Garden for 7 days.We arrived in pouring rain, which obviosly was not the fault of Warners.
The surroundings of the room would have been very pleasant if the weather was better. but the location was terrible. We are both in our late 80s and my wife has had three knee replacements and there were only two rooms next to ous that were further away from activity and the restaurant., a distance of possibly 300yards. Almost another 200 yards further to the large house and comfortable chairs..We decided that after four nights we had had enough and left returning to our home..Reading other Trip Advisor remarks we would agree that at the time of booking or even in the brochure we should have been advised of this problem of distance. No doubt a young healthy couple may have enjoyed it
.Unfortunately a waste of money.

Room Tip: Obtain,if possible, information of the site, not just the pleasant remarks

Booked a 2 night break Monday-Wednesday taking my elderly Mum to visit relatives in Devon, to break up the travel journey. This is a lovely hotel if you are fit and walking is not a problem. However, if you have walking difficulties I would advise that it might be beneficial to 'phone and speak to a Warners advisor to discuss your specific needs as some rooms are quite a long walk from the main building area where meals and entertainment take place. We had a Standard room in the Courtyard building (Room 232) which had a small patio area outside and it was very comfortable and peaceful - right next to the historic house - not a problem for me walking, but Mum still struggled a bit. However a large number of rooms seem to be in the new building which involves walking outside and this wouldn't have suited my Mum so I'm glad I 'phoned and explained my Mum's specific needs with an Advisor first before booking. The swimming pool/leisure centre is also in this new area which was a shame, as it meant Mum couldn't use it as it was too far to walk. It was late October and for the few days we were there, the weather was murky and misty, I couldn't see much of the gardens so can't comment on the outside areas of the hotel. The historic section was quiet and peaceful and there was a nice bar for a pre-dinner drink which was much better than the small reception area by the main dining room where there are too few seats. The food was up to usual Warner standards and the two nights we were there, the entertainment team put on shows. There was also a lot of ballroom and sequence dancing. The car park is large with plenty of space and situated mid-way between the two areas. I hope these tips help you to book a good room for your requirements and you enjoy your time here.
On a separate matter, if you have a SatNav and like mine it likes to take you up country lanes, then stay on the main road to Chard until you reach the brown signs. My SatNav tried to take us up a dirt track which was a true shortcut, but I prefer to stick to main A or B roads!

Room Tip: If you have limited mobility, speak with a Warners advisor before booking.

.......is it really four star?

Most rooms are a long way away from the dining room, with an outside walk between two covered ways - it's about 40 yards in the open (not the 20 advised by staff) in front of the church, which is presumably why there's a break in the covered walkway. It is just enough to get uncomfortably wet in the rain, plus one walkway (connected to the new builidng) was unheated - not so good on the one night there was a frost.

One evening the automatic doors to the new building walkway jammed shut and we (and several others) had to wait at least half an hour while the night manager found keys and released the door. For the rest of the stay it was wedged open so was impossible to heat the walkway.

Porter service was available on arrival, but we could not find one for the return, so had to lug our cases some distance to the leisure area entrance and then get the car as close as possible. All a bit of drag that somewhat soured the weekend experience.

On the plus side the dining staff were brilliant - nothing was too much trouble for them. However, the evening buffet showed a lack of imagination (carrots every day as one of the vegetables), but the cavery was superb and if this was not your thing you could order various dishes which were waiter served. These were nicely presented.

The grounds are superb and worth a visit in their own right - a photographers heaven. Try taking pictures of the floodlit church at night with a clear sky.

As with all Warners there is a program of evening entertainment - the staff team were particularly good on the Sunday night. There was entertainment in the lounge with a chap who had a great sense of humour. The only problem was that due to the age of most of the guests, the dance hall emptied fairly early leaving a couple of dozen couples which meant that the staff had to work hard to create a late night atmosphere.

The hotel is ideally placed for visits to Lyme Regis, Seaton, Weymouth etc and other local attractions such as Forde Abbey Gardens and Abbotsbury Sub-tropical gardens, so if shooting and archery or learning line dancing are not your thing then there is plenty of other things to do in what is a beautiful part of the country.

When in the hotel, like other reviewers we also felt a bit isolated.

I would mention that we have stayed at other Warner hotels and found them to be a more satisfying experience so perhaps we were just unlucky.

Room Tip: A Historic room or other room in the main building is a must

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. All feedback both positive and negative is appreciated and passed to relevant team managers.

I apologise that some of the aspects of your holiday did not match your expectations. I have fed your comments on the restaurant back to the team, it is important that we act upon guest feedback.

I was pleased you found some good points during your stay and hope it will not deter you from using us for a break in the future.

The original building for this hotel is the facade that was used for the TV series To theManor Born and the setting is fabulous! But don't be sucked in - unless you have booked a historic room you will not be staying in the main house - and probably will only go up there for a look! The rest of the hotel is a new build a couple of hundred yards away! It is a big site and going from the main area of hotel rooms to the dining room requires about a 200yd walk - some of which is outside!

We had a 3* room (I'm grading them 1* - 4* depending on price) which was spacious, well equipped, comfortable and clean. I asked for a garden view - ours was of a small paved area, and the outside of the buliding that housed the swimming pool! Not sure what you have to do to get a view of the beautiful grounds!

The dining room was a bit of a scrum for breakfast - so I was glad we had opted to dine in the onsite Italian restuarant. The food was delicious, imaginative and the service was good. In the main dining room there was a varied choice of food at breakfast - but it didn't feel like a leisurely experience. Bar prices are expensive.

This felt like a hotel that was catering for groups of family or friends, as a couple we felt a bit isolated.
