Secret Bay is an amazing destination. It is a beautiful romantic destination that we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The Tifey bungalow was wonderful and the service excellent. The only complaint is that the bed and bedding were not to the same standard of luxury as the rest of the bungalow.
Consider going without the pre-stock option. There is a grocery store rather close which is an experience and a way to get just what you want.
Take advantage of the kayaking to the local beaches. We had them to ourselves. Also know that rainy season extends through December. It rained every day while we were there but it was a warm rain.

Room tip: The villas have better views but the bungalows are still amazing for a much better price and they all have the so so bed and bedding. Tifey had a walk way light that shines into the bedroom, the other bungalow should be darker if you like less light to sleep.

Hi Kelly H,

Thanks for your wonderful comments. It was great having you here and we hope to welcome you back soon.

We are sorry your sleep experience was not as expected. Guests generally love the bedding but we understand everyone has varied sleep preferences. This is why we recently introduced our SleptAway program. Guests now have the option to choose their mattress & pillow softness and firmness. So next time just let us know and we’ll change it to accommodate your preference!
We provide a highly personalized service which includes pre-stocking - to have food items readily available upon arrival and during your stay. Items are not always available at the nearby supermarket so we do our best to have everything you request waiting for you when you arrive to your home away from home.

We really appreciate your review!

Regards,

Merlinda

My wife wanted to return for her birthday, and it seemed a perfect idea. There have been small changes since last year, Anna has left and we missed her, however this gave us the opportunity to become acquainted with Merlinda, the new Sales Manager. She made us very welcome, arranged our outings and was very patient with our last minute schedule changes, and went above and beyond with a minor medical issue that was resolved within hours. We saw Saralee again, who is now mentoring and training the other attendees, and got to know Sharmei, Dora and Tasha. The Sous Shack is still in the capable hands of Gemma and Josie, and Eric (also chef at Du Champs on Fridays, you must go!) and Vanessa have joined them. Gilbert picked us up at the airport, shuttled us around a few days, and pointed us in the direction of the best burger in the area.
It will become apparent when you visit that Secret Bay hires the very best people, they are skilled at what they do (which can be taught) but they are excellent with people and really devoted to making you feel comfortable. The location is perfect, and the villas are well-built and designed to be relaxing and blend with the landscape, but the real secret to their success (IMHO) is the people. They really do such a great job at making you comfortable, relaxed and welcome.
They also work with some terrific people, like Kelvin, who drove us to Portsmouth for some shopping and to the Macoucherie Rum Distillery for a tour, Rowy who drove us to the airport and gave us a tour on the way, Dr Birdy, who we toured the Syndicate park with last year, Patrick, our driver to Roseau, all terrific people in whose care Secret Bay placed us, knowing we would be safe.
My only concern is the word is out, and it will be more difficult to get a reservation next year.

We traveled to Secret Bay in mid-October (a perfect time for the trip -- we had all of the most popular attractions to ourselves because the busy season had not started, and our weather was perfect all week). We had read the glowing TripAdvisor reviews, and our expectations for this vacation were high. We were not disappointed—it was even better than we hoped.

First of all, the food is as good as everyone says it is. We told them that we eat primarily seafood and vegetarian fare, and every day we told them to surprise us for lunch and dinner -- and every single meal was fantastic. The dishes were creative, flavorful, and beautiful. Deserts were amazing too.

We stayed in the Ti-Fey bungalow, and we loved it. We did get a tour of one of the honeymoon villas, and it was certainly stunning (worthy of all the "Sexiest Bedroom in the World" accolades from travel magazines), but we thought Ti-Fey and Mapou bungalows provided excellent bang for our buck. We spent a lot of time on our balcony (where we ate all of our meals) and never even saw our neighbors at Mapou, so it felt very private. Every morning, the birds and lizards outside our bungalow provided entertaining breakfast theater, chasing each other around and vying for the scraps of fresh fruit my wife gave them. At lunch, bright green iguanas crawled up the trees outside our bungalow to sun themselves. It was a jungle paradise, with a beautiful view through the trees of the beach, lagoon and Fort Shirley across the bay. The bungalow was comfortable and very pretty -- they think of all the small details.

The staff was awesome too. Our personal attendant, Saralee, was attentive to all of our needs and whims (mid-afternoon pina coladas delivered to our bungalow? No problem!), and she was always just a phone call away if we picked up the iPhone left for us by Secret Bay. The concierge, Merlinda, organized wonderful excursions for us -- both of them made everything easy. (We highly recommend Trafalgar Falls, especially in the offseason when it is not crowded. One of the highlights of our trip was soaking in the cold pool under the waterfall, then going to the natural hot pool. We also loved the Indian River boat trip with our guide, Fire, and the snorkeling excursion to Champagne Beach). But if you don't feel like leaving the property, you don't have to -- you could spend your whole vacation just relaxing at your bungalow, or down at one of the three beaches at Secret Bay (two of them accessible by kayak). Dominica is such a beautiful island, with so much to explore, that we found a balance of adventure and relaxation to be the right mix. Massages on the sunset deck and reading on the balcony was enough activity for one day, and hiking through the jungle was perfect the next.

Tips:

- The wine list wasn't great, and it was overpriced. We actually took a cab to a local grocery store one day and bought several decent bottles of wine for a better price; consider bringing your own.

- Don't bring kids; this is really a couples' resort, and it is very quiet. There was a family with two kids staying at one of the larger villas during part of our stay, and it was mostly fine, but the kids did get a little noisy at times, and we found it annoying. If you're looking for a family getaway, this really isn't the place.

- Make sure to save a little cash for the "departure tax" at the airport. Our experience at the airport caused us to leave with a sour taste in our mouths after an otherwise perfect vacation, which was too bad.

But we're really nit-picking here -- this was an amazing romantic getaway. Book it now -- you won't regret it.

Room tip: You can't go wrong with any of the rooms. The honeymoon villas looked incredible, but Ti-Fey (where we stayed) and Mapou provide great value, and we loved them.

Hi Aaron F, thank you for taking the time to submit such a wonderful and detailed review of your experience at Secret Bay and Dominica by extension.

Regarding the wines, they have been specifically selected by our Sommelier to match Secret Bay’s fresh, local and organic cuisine and these wines are generally not available at the supermarket.

We do apologize for the noise that the Children made. Our Zing Zing villa is popular with small families and is quite isolated from the other villas and it is extremely rare that one guest would hear another. And in such an event, just let us know and we will speak to the other guest.

We do try to inform our guests of the departure tax which is USD$23 (cash only) per person. We apologize if this was not done.

We know and appreciate that you consider these very minor issues but we do take your feedback seriously and will aim give you an even better experience next time! We do hope to welcome you again soon.

Thanks again for your review.

Kind regards,

Merlinda

We've been all over the (typical) Caribbean, and after doing due diligence and research, I decided to take my wife for a well deserved childless trip to a romantic getaway in Dominica. This place is everything the reviews say and better- its a beautiful, secluded (yet conveniently close to a small city, Portsmouth) tropical paradise - nestled on top of a small cliff overlooking Ti and Secret Bays. First of all, service was outstanding: from the moment I booked the hotel, to when we lost our flight at MIA and they rearranged everything (including two unscheduled nights), to when we arrived, helping us get acquainted and programming activities, to our departure, the staff was nothing but 5 star. The accommodations are beautiful, architectural jewels designed by architect Fruto Vivas, Bungalows and Villas done in impeccable taste and using the finest materials and appliances. The food, cooked locally with local ingredients, refreshingly different, cooked to perfection. A quiet, reserved atmosphere, with few guests that you may not see during the entire day... beautiful scenery, amazing sunsets. We visited the rainforest, the falls, we scuba dived... all went smooth, the entire Island is geared for eco tourism, people are laid back and friendly, the roads are well kept and clean. I will definitely go back to it. Finally, the owner came to visit us on the last day, to make sure our stay had been satisfactory, it was just a pleasure to speak to him and it felt natural to let him know what a good job he had made in creating the Secret Bay experience. We will come back for sure...

Room tip: The honeymoon villas are simply amazing...

I am speechless with this jewel tucked away in the Caribbean. Even the pirates of the Caribbean could not have discovered a priceless gem -such as Secret Bay. Amazing view, fantastic staff, luxurious rooms, scrumptious meals, superb hospitality. Sitting on the spacious balcony sipping on a "Dominican special cocoa tea, I was truly mesmerized by the wondrous sunset, the sonnet of birds, the dancing of the waves. The personalized staff were very courteous and helpful. Highly recommended destination for a restful and heavenly stay.

Room tip: It is hard to recommend one special room, all the rooms/suites looked like it had its own charm
