We stayed here for three nights during a trip to Dominica and we really enjoyed our time here. The owners recommended to rent a four wheel drive car and this was really necessary since the road is steep. But it was also really fun to drive :)
The tree house we stayed in was spacious, beautifully furnished - everything was made of wood - and we really felt comfortable there. Keep in mind that there are no windows so it would be wise to bring some moskito spray. But they also have moskito coils in the room and a great soap that works as a natural moskito repellent. The view from the tree house is magnificent. You just wake up and the first thing you see is the rainforest and the ocean. I think it's hard to find something that is even more gorgeous than this.
The owners are friendly and helpful, they gave us great advice on what to do and see in Dominica. It is a wonderful, natural island.

However, if you have a problem with the sounds the animals around you make and if you need the luxury of an air condition, this is maybe not right for you.

This place is wonderful if you...
...want to have a true "natural" experience
...want to fall asleep to the sound of the rainforest
...have a magnificent view when you wake up

Manicou was recommended by my cousin and its as such a great recommendation. We loved our time here. We are a family of four and we spent a couple of nights here. Great cottages, love the design, little touches that make it special. A gorgeous view from our cottage. Kate and Patrick are really open, friendly and helpful. Our son loved looking for lizards and insects, both children enjoyed the birds that would visit our balcony. Plenty of room for us all, and beautifully laid out. I recommend that you come with your food to cook as you may not want to leave your cottage!! And the local restaurant was ok but not that great. Kate and Patrick are planning to have a place onsite soon where you can buy a meal which will be a great addition. We will definitely come back when we return to Dominica in the future.

We loved our experience at Manicou River. I couldn't imagine a more tastefully finished treehouse, with a more perfect view. Our young children loved the lizards & hermit crabs, as well as the novelty of living in a treehouse. Paul & I loved the relaxation of gazing endlessly at Dominca's bays & rainforest. Drinking fresh coffee whilst watching hummingbirds diving between flowers is a perfect start to any day.

Kate was an extremely helpful & organised hostess. She answered endless questions from me in the lead up to our stay & ensured that travelling around the island was made as easy as possible for us. We enjoyed meeting her and wish Patrick and her every success with the restaurant that they are building in the resort.

Maybe it's also helpful for other travellers to know that travel to and from the island has become much more reliable, since LIAT upgraded their planes a few months ago. As we were doing a side trip from St Lucia and were tight for time, I had been slightly put off visiting Dominica by the negative reviews that I had read about LIAT. However, we found the service excellent (new plane, on time, friendly staff) so this upgrade should improve any vistor's overall experience.

Dominca is a very beautiful & friendly island to visit & our stay at Manicou River was a real highlight of our Caribbean holiday.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our honeymoon in Dominica and it was definitely worth the quick visit. The views are some of the most stunning on the island and the cabins provide everything you need to get away from it all for a few days. The road up to the cabins as people have mentioned is very steep and I would not have felt comfortable at all without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The only downside is no fault to Kate and Patrick's work as we happened to be staying after quite a bit of rain and the mosquito's were out in pretty good numbers. We had to spray and keep the mosquito coil going the whole time we were in the cabins to stave them off. Overall it was a good stay and added a special element to our honeymoon.

Thanks so much for the review. We are sorry about the mosquitos. Unfortunately the problem is island-wide at this time of year. Usually, up here on the mountain, we have plenty of breeze to keep them away. It's unfortunate that the nights you were here were fairly still. Glad you found the coils useful though.

Kind regards and thanks again for taking the time.

We selected this property after combing through all the available options on Dominica, and wow, what a pick it was! Keep in mind that this is a very remote location, and you'll need a 4x4 car to make the most out of your stay, we've seen guests without their own transport, but you'd want to be in good physical shape to hike up and down the steep paths.

First of all, when Kate & Patrick say you need a 4x4 to get up to their pad, they're not joking, there is no way a regular car gets you up there. Luckily we took their advice to heart, and even when we mentioned Manicou River to the car rental company, they nodded knowingly and made sure we had the right car for the track, these guys all seem to know what you're up to.

The cabins are all set against the mountain side, and are completely open on one side, giving you a fantastic view over the vegetation below, all the way over to the Cabrits. And that view is just mesmerising, i could sit there any time of the day, just looking out over the bay and taking in everything that happens within your view. Because the cabins are so open, you will get visited regularly by the local wildlife, we had plenty of birds during the day, and bats and geckos at night, but none of them ever bothered us. As long as you make sure your food is well covered, you won't have any problems. (as Kate will most likely tell you, the birds *love* candle wax, so keep the candles out of reach as well when you're not there). I think i should mention that we didn't get any mosquito bites while we were there.

Every week day, our room got a proper clean, and the whole place would smell of Kate's locally sourced bay oil/soap. It's fantastic stuff, don't forget to buy a few bars from Kate to bring home!

The cabins have everything you need, there are plenty pots and pans to cook your own dinner, which is what we did most nights. You'll also find salt/pepper/oil/coffee/tea/sugar in your kitchenette, we were impressed! Local dinner options are limited, so it really makes sense to cook up your own dinner, fresh fish is sold along Michael Douglas Blvd, and anything else you'll find at the IGA in Picard. Dinner options worth mentioning are Poonkies (down the road at the junction), and we can highly recommend Monty's Fish and Grill (on the beach at the T junction where the entrance to Cabrits National park meets Bay street. There are a few more options in Portsmouth, but don't expect too much.

Since the whole property is off grid, running on solar power, there are not that many lights in the cabins, so you will mostly depending on candle light (except for bathroom and kitchen area). There is a solar powered reading light in each cabin, but since we both read quite a lot, we found we could have done with some extra reading lights, and Kate mentioned they'll be supplying more of these soon.

Oh, and the bed + linens are super comfortable!

So if you're looking for a self catered cabin tucked away in lush vegetation with an amazing view, it doesn't get much better than Manicou River. Apparently there are plans for an on-site restaurant at some point, which would make this property even more attractive, we'd love to come back and check out what Kate and Patrick made of that.

HI Marika and Tomo,

Thanks so much for such a detailed review. It will be really helpful for future guests to get a feel for the place.

Thanks to you feedback, we have now made sure all the cottages have two solar reading lamps. And, yes, plans for the restaurant are underway. We are hoping to have it open by the end of the year.

We hope to welcome you back soon.

Kind regards,

Kate and Patrick

It's almost like words cannot describe such a gem. Yes, the views are amazing all day, every day. It's like a happy dream. We woke up to the most lovely morning bird songs and spent relaxing evenings next to the Manicou River. The cabins, so well appointed and designed are comfortable and inspire relaxation. It felt like every detail was planned with thoughtfulness and good intention. We wanted for nothing except to stay longer and we were there for 12 days! The best part of it all is the staff. Kate and Patrick are lovely, open and helpful. They know the area and offer information if you need it. They have chosen a small staff of wonderful, warm people who always have a welcoming smile and nice words. Conrad, who among many other things, delivers fresh spring water to each cabin daily, and it's the best water! I wouldn't normally call water delicious but this water really is. Claudia, is thorough, and mindful with a sweet, disposition and a beautiful smile. My husband and I travel a lot and spend many nights in various lodgings. This is a very special place! Icing on the cake...it's totally Eco, solar, with hot showers when ever you want, rain water,(our skin is much softer than it was when we arrived) off the grid if you wish, or you can wifi yourself into a happy puddle. So, rent yourself a 4x4, get there and stay for a while. You'll be glad you did. We can't wait to return.

Thanks so much for writing this beautiful and detailed review.

Living at Manicou River is a joy and a privilege but it is also very hard work. Getting the accommodation to the standard that met our vision over the past year has been a real trial.

It is so heart-warming for us to hear that all this hard work has paid off by giving nice people the holidays they deserve.

With kind regards,

Kate and Patrick.

When we arrived we didn’t estimate the road to be as crazy as it was. We thought that our taxi would be able to make the trip up the mountain. So when we got to the bottom, the owner of Poonkies bar located at the bottom of the hill, laughed and “Said you’re not making it up the hill in that”. He told us to take our stuff out and come have a beer and would drive us up the hill in a few minutes. This was great because we got to know Trevor really good and we spent a lot of time at his place every night. We made it up to our retreat and we were blown away. Kate was very friendly and showed us around our room. The cottage has everything you would need to make all your own dinners. We loved the openness of the room, being able to feel the trade winds blow in each night while sleeping is to die for. The birds are merciless little thieves though. If you don’t put your food away, they will help themselves to your dinner. We put a little bread on the ledges each day to watch them come feed, and kept the rest hidden. The cottage has some power, but really only used for a few lights and a fridge. We loved this, you get a great atmosphere with a bunch on candles lit and we had a full moon that lit up the ocean sky. We didn't find the bugs to be bad here. I don't think we even got bit once. :)

You can hike down to the bottom of the hill, taking the short cut way back through a trail that they have on their property. It follows the Manicour River all the way down past the BBQ area to Poonkies restaurant/bar. Ask Trevor about his specially rums, they are great. Great selection of booze here and great food.

When we booked Manicou, we found it very easy and Kate was quick to respond to all my questions before we arrived. We had an amazing time here and hope to return someday real soon.
Your search is over for a place to stay. Book here, you won’t regret it.
