“Fab Food!”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

My boyfirend and I have just returned from a weekend, Fri - Sun, 2 nights, at The Bay Horse purchased via KGB. We'd read the previous reviews to weren't expecting GREAT things, but we just wanted a break and the KGB deal seemed like great value.

When we arrived, Rachel welcomed us and gave us our key to 'Chalet' 10. We were able to pull up right outside the door and went in to find a very spacious room with a lovely 4 poster bed, dressing table, wardrobe and couple of leather chairs - FAR better than we thought it was going to be. The bathroom was clean with a bath and overhead shower and plenty of hot water. Okay, the decor was a bit dated maybe and the mattress perhaps a bit lumpy, but overall we were very pleased.

Our deal included 2 main meals so that night we ate in the pub. We ordered starters and for mains had fish and chips and steak pie. OMG - they were gorgeous. So much so, we went back and had the mains again for lunch the next day! Really good food, good portion sizes and great value.

We stayed in the pub that first night and got talking to the very entertaining locals; a very lively, down to earth bunch that were great craic. We also got talking to the chef, John, who is as lovely as his food! He was stil serving up bar snacks towards the end of the night and we somehow got talking about the scotch eggs he was serving. They were hardboiled and my boyfriend said he would prefer softboiled, so John promised to make some specially for us the next evening.

True to his word, we had soft-boiled poached eggs as a pre-starter on the second night! (Needless to say, we were'n't going to eat anywhere else for the rest of our stay so enjoyed meals in the pub again!).

Overall, we were happy with our room; it wasn't the most modern or plush, but we weren't expecting it to be, and it did exceed our expectations. The food FAR surpssed our expectations and if I was ever ANYWHERE near this area again I'd be calling in to eat! And on a par with the fabulous food are the locals and staff; they are the friendliest, most welcoming and entertaining bunch you could ever hope to meet. We will definitely be back.

One last thing - we had a lovely day out in Durham on the Saturday, only 3 miles away and lovely to visit; we did a boat ride, walked up to the castle and cathedral and went round the shops etc. On the way home to Leeds we went via the Angel of the North and Whitby. We went to the famous Magpie for fish and chips and both my boyfriend and I agreed that whilst they were lovely, they weren't a patch on Chef Johns.

Have recently stayed at the bay horse on a kgb deal. We received a warm welcome from melanie who was very friendly and helpful as were the rest of the staff. Our chalet was fine bedding and bathroom clean, but we felt the room let them down. Several things in the room were not as they should be.lighting and shelving a bit hit and miss not secure. We ate at the pub food fine but could have been hotter plates were warm but food not so. Overall for what we paid it was fine the staff definately make this place, its handy for visits to durham and hartlepool.

My partner and I booked a meal through Living Social Website (2 courses each plus a glass of wine for £14 total. The meals we received were outstanding and far beyond our expectation . First of all, the service from Craig from entering the restaurant , to leaving was brilliant .He carried his work out very professionally, even though he was very busy, and is a credit to The Bay Horse . Compliments to the chef on a fabulous meal and very good portions provided. We will definitely be going again and will recommend to all of our friends , and highly recommend The Bay horse.

We stayed last week for 2 nights & were extremely happy with the service, the food and the room. Extra heaters were provided so we were not cold (and it was freezing outside), the beer was greatly enjoyed by my husband and the house wine was excellent - normally I have to wince!
Very close to Durham. We walked along the W2W - an excellent cycle track/walk at the bottom of the road along a disused railway line- it would be great to bring the bikes here in the summer.

Stayed at this place begining of April 2013 when snow was all around!
Arrived not really knowing what to expect , met in the bar by very friendly staff who showed us to our accomodation which was just to the rear of the pub in challets. Challets were very clean, warm, homeley and contained everything you could wish for: tv,freeview, kettle, tea coffee etc, hairdryer and ample space. If I wasn,t impressed enough by the accomodation we ate at the Inn each night of our stay the food was fabulous our only regret is that we could not stay longer as we would of liked to of sampled more of the menu, however I'm sure we will return as the staff all made our stay enjoyable.

We stayed at the Bay Horse Inn between Christmas and New Year. It was on a voucher deal so very, very good value. We had a motel style room that was clean and warm and very convenient as we had our dog with us. Brandon is a pretty, quiet spot, just outside Durham but not to far to travel in. Staff were very friendly and obliging. I had packed our cool box with milk and other supplies but forgot to add ice packs and the kitchen staff were always willing to supply ice from their freezer! We had breakfast in the hotel (it was included) and it was nicely cooked and served.

We stayed at the Bay Horse Inn to attend a wedding at Durham Castle last Saturday. As soon as we arrived we were made extremely welcome, everyone we spoke to was incredibly friendly and helpful, even arranging a taxi for us while we freshened up in the room. They sure know how to do customer service at its best up North! It was just £10 in a taxi to the Castle.

The room itself was basic (as we expected at the price) but extremely spacious and clean, with shower, hairdryer, full length mirror - everything we needed to get ready. It even had a tv and tea/ coffee set.

We had breakfast in the Inn, which was great value £4.95 for a cooked breakfast. Our only minor disappointment was that it didn't come with any bacon - one of my favourite parts of a full English!

All in all we would stay here again if we were in the area and would happily recommend it as a super friendly and excellent value place to stay in Durham.
