Have just returned from another visit to this, popular village inn. We enjoyed our first stay and found this time it was even better. We had a lovely room (8) Spacious and very clean. Found that there is new and I must say improved management. Last time we went the food was really good, this time it is outstanding, well cooked and presented just like a first class restaurant. The staff are very good and so helpful. Extremely good value. It is really friendly in the public bar and we didn't feel out of place, in fact the regulars remembered us from last year, it just made us feel like we belonged there. We are planning another trip to the North East and will stay there again with or without our trusty KGB voucher. It is a really good base for the North East, the surrounding countryside is stunning, a short trip to Beamish which is well worth a visit. I look forward to seeing all of our new friends again soon.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are surrounding a courtyard, we liked our room - 8 which is a double with a bath wi...

Just returned home having spent two nights at the Bay Horse with friends.

What a find this is a fantastic country inn. It is placed just outside of Durham in a lovely little village named Brandon. £8 in a taxi takes you to Durham city centre which has regular trains to Newcastle that takes only 13 mins.

On arrival we were met by Phil the manager, checking in was easy and from the first minuate we were made to feel at home. We stayed in room 5 which is great. Large double room with a bath/shower. The room was tastefully decorated.

We had two meals in the restaurant and breakfast each morning. The food was quality home cooked food which we very much enjoyed. The fish and chips was probably the best I have ever tasted and the mixed grill is not for the faint hearted.

Each evening we had a few drinks in the bar and chatted with the staff and locals. We were made to feel very welcome by all but i am now left disappointed that this is not my local.

The staff are an absolute credit to the pub, in particular Phil, Keith the bar man and the guys who cooked us breakfast. Nothing was to much trouble.

The prices at the pub for food and drinks are more than reasonable and dare I say it I think they are selling themselves short.

If you are looking for a country pub inn break that is easily accessible for major cities then this is the place. I will be returning as will my friends.

Thanks Mr and Mrs Grounds

I really didnt know what to expect after reading previous tripadvisors and I have to say it was difficult to keep an open mind . I arrived here on a busy Saturday night and was greeted by Phil the manager. I immediately felt at ease ,he was welcoming and friendly .After explaining the hotel facilities he showed us to our room, again I was pleasently surprised. What I feel people seem to forget is this is a 250 year old coach house not a newly built Raddison Hotel. The old coach house is brimming with character with old photographs on the walls, locals who have stories of times gone by and welcome strangers with open arms.It was like going back in time and I fell in love with the romance of this old building. The menu is packed with british classics My friends meal was a steak and ale pie ...so tasty I had some. I opted for the pork belly ...Delicious A great stay and we will definitely be returning . Well done to Phil and his team !!!

Arrived valentines weekend to warm welcome from friendly staff. Our room was large and clean but very dated. The bed was advertised as a double but was more a 3/4. Spent the first night chatting to locals - roaring fire and lovely company. My partner had hearty breakfast and we caught the bus from the village into Durham. Here we explored the cathedral and walked the wonderful cobbled streets for hours - enchanting. We then caught the train for a quick glimpse of Newcastle ... Vibrant. We returned to The Bay Horse and had our meal included on the KGB deal, plentiful and beautifully presented, although the waiting on staff dress code could have been presentable. The manager was leaving on our departure day, and as I was lead to believe there has been no stability of management for sometime. The Inn has amazing potential and holds the whole heart of the village and surrounding area, it just needs some tender loving care and a whole new attention to detail. After speaking to lots of locals, come on you owners give The Bay Horse a real chance, otherwise you will end up like the boarded up pub opposite.....Tom and BJ wiling to assist!

This was a KGB deal for three nights so that I could see Shildon Railway Museum, etc. The hotel is situated in a quiet area convenient for Durham and several attractions. The staff were delightfully friendly and helpful, the breakfasts were first class and the evening meal large and excellent. The manager is very new and willing to help. The rooms are at the back of the hotel and are clean and adequately furnished. The dividing walls are rather thin so one needs quiet neighbours! Room had twin beds which, although comfortable, had rather small duvets which for big people were barely adequate. Would stay again!

Room Tip: Only saw room 3 which was pleasant.
