I spent 5 days in Lyons-la-Foret, 3 nights at Hotel La Licorne with my spouse and 2 nights solo at Le Grand Cerf after my spouse returned early to the USA. I stayed in the rustic room called Le Cormier (90 E weekdays; 100 E weekends). This was a very comfortable room with a nice little table and two pink upholstered chairs. The lovely bathroom had a large shower with a wonderful rain showerhead. My spouse & I happened to be staying at the sister hotel a few doors down (Hotel La Licorne) during the same weekend as the grand opening of Le Grand Cerf back in September 2009, and we were able to visit some of the rooms; hence, my desire to stay here. These were all beautiful, rustic, yet elegant, hunting-lodge style with hardwood floors and a stag and forest theme throughout. The color scheme in the rooms was gray, beige and burgundy. The suite (“Le Peuplier Neige”) was stunning with a curtain and timbers to separate the sitting area (with a fold-out sofa) from the bedroom area for privacy when 3 or 4 people stay in the room. We were in awe of the décor that combines elements of contemporary, rustic, and natural style. What a wonderful retreat from the big city! The theme throughout, as its name indicates, is the deer hunt. Shades of gray, beige & white dominate in the restaurant, bar and the gorgeous reception areas. The reception and the bar area are timbered and decorated with white birch trees, both birch tree designed wallpaper and real birch tree trunks. The Hotel du Grand Cerf is managed by the same person (Mme Bonfils) and run by the same staff as at the Hotel la Licorne, so they are not always present at Le Grand Cerf. The hotel restaurant, Le Bistro du Grand Cerf, has an open kitchen and the décor is contemporary, yet rustic with 3-course menus at 19 and 25 Euros. Executive chef, Christophe Poirier, who is the remarkable chef at La Licorne, oversees the kitchen. I entertained my local French friends here on Saturday, May 22, and we all found the food was excellent, although not as refined as at the more-expensive La Licorne. It is, of course, meant to be bistro food. The dishes we sampled were a Camembert salad, which was a plate of salad greens with a few wedges of crisp-fried camembert, a Norman cheese-lover’s delight; a smooth and luscious cream of asparagus soup; a light Dorade filet with fennel; veal kidneys; and beef cheeks. Dessert was a bowl of fresh strawberries with a dollop of cream, drizzled with honey. This was no ordinary bowl of strawberries and cream, for the dish was so flavorful and exquisite that the chef surely added some magic touch that we ourselves could not discern. (I am submitting a separate restaurant review to Trip Advisor). There is a lovely garden in the back where meals are served when the weather is nice. In short, the Hotel du Grand Cerf is a great place to stay if you want a weekend away from the country in a rustic setting at a lower price than at La Licorne. The bistro is very good and affordable, and the guests can always dine at La Licorne Royale, a few steps away, if they wish to have a more refined, upscale meal. The Grand Cerf is new and clean and very nice. Highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The hotel from the 17th century has re-opened its doors in September 2009. This house, belongs to the history of Lyons la Foret. We wanted to give it new life in the purest tradition of the forest of Lyons, one of the most beautiful beech forests in Europe. It is in this spirit that designed the decoration of this former coaching inn, now a hotel charm. LE GRAND CERF, fully renovated, thus based on the theme of the Forest:the charm and warmth of the wood ... Thirteen rooms are available at the Hotel LE GRAND CERF all tell the story of a hamlet in the forest. Chef Christophe Poirier offers a traditionnal cuisine at Le Bistrot du Grand Cerf. ... more   less
