Careful with this place, I had a very bad experience with them. They took my money after I made a cancellation by phone, and they never admitted that I did, they said that I did not cancel so I had to pay the full stay.

Careful with the staff and people working in reception, they will take your money if they can.

Let's face it, Sicily can be scruffy. Litter lines just about every road even close to the extraordinary archaeological gems that the island possesses. Arrival at this campsite, on the edge of mazarro and sandwiched between a lazy river and a rail track (twice hourly so no big deal) its not exactly inspiring. However it is well run by pleasant and helpful staff who do their best to provide a good service.

The mobile homes are what you would expect, all have optional air con though we did not need it and are otherwise adequately equipped.

The mini market on site is awful and sells almost nothing, on the odd occassion that it is open, so make sure you stock up elsewhere! The on site restaurant is ok and inexpensive.

In the height of season the pool is bursting at the seams with the almost exclusively Italian guests. A nearby beach just 5 mins walk is a nice escape. There are lots of good beaches a short drive away, and this part of Sicily provides options for many day trips to magnificent Greek ruins and pretty Sicilian towns.

Don't bother with the water park nearby and driving anywhere always takes longer than expected.

All in the title really.
In agreement with other reviews.
It's not a bit run down which isn't shown in the pics - but doesn't mean you shouldn't go.
Don't go on 14th of August - bank holiday on the 15th so ALL shops are shut from 2pm on the 14th and dont open until the 16th. The Italians then party all night - which is ok for some - but not if you've been up early that day.
Just buy the bread in the campsite shop and put only small amounts on the campsite credit card in case you need to leave before anyone is at reception.
Try to contact the campsite to get a caravan away from the kids play area as teenies turn up there to natter throughout the night.
Kids loved the dancing - so if you have daughters who like wii dance type thing with an instructor this is the place.
Staff all very very nice. Restaurant good aswell but you need to get there for 8 to avoid very slow service due to it's popularity.

Room Tip: Try to contact the campsite to get a caravan away from the kids play area as teenies turn up there t...

Family of 3 with our own tent plus a hire-car for 12 nights. We arrived 23 Jul and the camping field was only about 10% full so we found a quiet spot and had room to spread out. At weekends, the site was more like 25% full, mostly with camper-vans.

Mazara del Vallo is not a tourist town. Most of the guests at SportingClub are Italian with a few Belgian and Dutch. We were the only Brits there which suited us fine! The nearest supermarket is about 1Km and nearest off-site restaurant about 800m. Mazara is a working fishing port and city which is largely scruffy except for the sea-front and main shopping streets. There's a beautiful old town just beside the port though.

Within walking distance there's a beach with a private part and a public part. The public part is fine but it's quite a thin strip of sand and isn't too scenic. Using a car, you can get to Selinunte which has a beautiful beach.

The good points:
1. Plenty of space for camping and no need to have very close neighbours
2. Brand new shower block with funky blue lighting
3. Sicilians are generally very well-behaved so we had no worries with security, safety etc.
4. Pool is big and well-maintained. Gets a bit busy at times.
5. Lots of things going on - probably more animation that is really neccessary
6. The staff and everybody were really friendly. An excellent atmosphere

and the bad:
1. Just one shower block (2 men's loos, 2 ladies' loos) for over 100 camping pitches. That's fine when it's only 10% full but there was queuing and the plumbing was unable to cope when the site was 25% full.
2. There aren't very many restaurants to choose from. There are about 7 along the sea front and another 4 or 5 that we found in other parts of the town. They don't serve pizza at lunchtime. If you want a pizza, you have to wait until evening.
3. The campsite is sandwiched between a river (rather stagnant in summer) and a road and railway line. It's not noisy but it is a rather urban setting.

Chalets have been replaced with brand new mobile homes with verandas. Staff were very helpful when we had problems with our hire car. Did not use the restaurant but the ones in town were cheap as were the supermarkets nearby. We stayed in May at £300 a week. Kids loved the play areas. Will be recommending here to all our family and friends. Some great beaches to the East round Selinute, so transport is a must.

Lets get the bad things out of the way first. We went in October, and although they took our booking and that of other people they started to close facilities whilst we were there. We were fortunate we left the morning they closed the pool but the restaurant closed mid way through our stay as did the pool bar. The terrace and animation was closed throughout but most annoying was the fact that the walkway to our caravan remained unlit for most of the holiday which was quite dangerous given that it is crazy paving.

The owner is one of the most unpleasant men I have met though he generally stays in the background so doesn't impinge on your enjoyment too much. The restaurant, whilst ok, is not somewhere I would recommend to anyone with an understanding of Italian food.

The site is also nothing like the pictures on the website. Thats not to say its terrible, just that things aren't as well maintained as the site would lead you to believe.

Having said that, the gardener/handyman is a genuine character and a lovely man to have a chat with, Fulvio in reception is professional and Valeria the cleaning lady is wonderful. My wife suffered terribly from mosquito bites and despite repeated trips to chemists etc it was Valeria who gave her the ointment which really worked.

The pool is reasonably clean and our son enjoyed the playground in the centre of the campsite.

Its quite a walk from the town, about half an hour, but there is a supermarket closer by up Viale Africa on the right hand side of the campsite exit. With the 30 minutes trip in mind make sure you make it worthwhile with a trip to Il Gambero restaurant, really beautiful food and have dessert at Mucho Gusto ice cream shop on the Lungomare.

The beach isn't that well maintained, and unfortunately we couldn't really let our 22 month old play on it as there are many syringes around but the town itself is quite attractive, if quiet, and the people are very friendly. The amount of times I was offered lifts to save me walking miles I can't count. I know this review seems quite negative but that would be unfair to the holiday we had. We really enjoyed it, and I'd be confident others would, but I think travelers thinking of going there should be prepared that they won't be getting luxury.
