“Hidden GEM - absolutely amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2010

We have just returned from a short break at the Oceania for Easter, and it was just perfect. We have been twice to Sandals resorts and RIU resorts all inclusive, so our standards were pretty high, but this resort matched perfectly the standards of these highly-rated ultra luxury chains. The staff I must admit is the best I EVER encountered on an all inclusive - they smile all the time, they are extremely friendly and try to accomodate you in every way. We were very lucky to decide not to go anywhere on Easter SUnday and stayed at the resort-they had fantastic entertainment by the Olympus pool (not the main pool - the Olympus is higher up so you have amazing views!!), there were bands, dancers, free flowing champagne, Easter snacks buffet style (and this was before the big Easter official lunch!!) and all the management and staff were there going round the guests and celebrating with us. Then, they set up a fantastic HUGE Easter Buffet lunch in the restaurant which was simply amazing, everyone dancing .... They have this amazing night club which fortunately was open for two nights for Easter - they serve really good drinks and cocktails up to 3am! Also, what is amazing re the staff is that they seem to work all the time - we saw the same people from morning to night for all the 5 days we were there, and yes they were smiling all the time! Management?? - present from morning to night every day, even after Easter, as we left a couple of days after. We also have to mention some exceptional people - Adriana (reception), Suzana (Blue Bar) Maria (restaurants) - you couldn't have gone more out of your way to please us. We also celebrated our anniversary whilst we were there, and even though the hotel was at full capacity and they were super busy, they got us like FIVE gifts in our room include cakes, fruit, champagne, etc. And at our restaurant they set up a special table with flowers, a bottle of champagne, an anniversary cake and what have you. BOTTLES of wine keep flowing at the a la carte restaurants (Sandals never serve you with bottles) and drinks and whatever you can dream of ---THANKS MARIA! Oceania, we'll be back!

Oceania is a great idea gone wrong. When my family and I checked in on the Thursday before Easter weekend, we were informed that the rate for Easter would be a full 84 euros ($113) more for Friday and Saturday than for Thursday, due to their "Easter Program." We had travelled 4 hours by car with 2 small children on a holiday weekend, and were not in a position to search for alternatives, so we checked in.

After the first night, we all complained of having the worst night's sleep of our lives. We quickly learned that the "suites" -- the largest rooms they offer -- were in no way acceptable lodging for a family (there are 2 rooms, but the 'living room' is not reasonable for sleeping in -- a fold-out, spring-filled Ottoman and a short couch with sheets on it, small even for my 7-year old.

When I went to the reception to inform them that we wanted to check out one day earlier than our orginally-planned 3 nights, I was told by a manager contacted by phone from the reception desk that the hotel policy is to keep a 90% PENALTY FEE. In other words, in exchange for our aching backs and desire to get home early, we would be offered a paltry 19.40 euros ($26) and the hotel would keep 176 euros ($238)! OUTRAGEOUS.

I travel extensively for business and pleasure and have never heard of such an absurd policy. That, and the fact that the beds are terrible, the rooms are poorly insulated (it sounded as though we had a herd of elephants above us all night and early in the mornings), and the "ultra all-inclusive" package does not include many services, such as a glass of fresh orange juice (on offer for 5 euros/$7!), the cappuchino comes from a push-button machine like you would find in a university dormitory, the wait-staff is over-worked and unable to achieve efficiency, and the high price completely ruin this otherwise idyllic setting. Our kids loved the mini club, thankfully, so there was one thing we didn't have to complain about. We returned from our 'vacation' angry, un-rested, sore and feeling robbed and ripped off. NEVER AGAIN.

The hotel was just preparing for the season so maybe not the best of times to visit. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, can't fault them. Accommodation is situated in blocks of three floors, with good sized balconies from which you can see Mt. Olympus and the middle finger like peninsula. However the walls are very thin and all too many of the guests were extremely loud, brash and very noisy. As a result of our neighbours refusing management requests to turn down the music that played until 2-o-clock in the morning, we were upgraded and moved for free to a junior suite which fronted the sea. The only difference was that the junior suite had a settee and a put-u-up single bed. Very low water pressures and it took about half an hour to fill the bath. Central drain point in the bathroom with grilled cover allowed noxious smells to pervade the bathroom.
Standard repetitive euro-fare food, it seemed las thopugh the hotel had entered a competition to discover how many ways rice could be served. Cheap ingredients made to look attractive. Bread and local cheese was excellent though and plenty of fresh fruit. Coffee is dire and the milk is, well, nothing like milk as I know it.
Billiards, spa, plus cucumber hydrating therapies at 25 euros! Film room, entertainment programme, usual hotel type standard, but pleasant enough.
It's when you leave the hotel complex that the problems start. There is just nothing to do. The local town is dirty, rubbish strewn and walls are covered in graffiti. It's just full of broken pavements and pot holes. Stray dogs everywhere, local shops and that's about it really. We had hired a car but still didn't find anything of note to go and see.
Maybe if you just want to stay in the hotel, eat, drink and swim in a noisy environment then this might appeal, but it just wasn't for us.

Had a great week here with family, struggle to find good standard for all inclusive without the q's and lounger races....but none of this here. Lovely pools and great food, lots to choose from, all were fed very well. Some entertainment in the evenings but not every, shows we saw were very good. Kids have asked to go again!

Should have been a great holiday according to Saga's brochure. Whoever wrote about the picturesque fishing village of nearby Nea Moudania deserves a literary award for extending the boundaries of fiction. The place is a festering dump and so are the beaches. No wonder the Greek economy is in freefall if this is how they treat their tourism resources. As for the Oceania club, well make sure you take enough sleeping pills with you when you go, you'll need them. The rooms have paper thin walls that make a good night's sleep virtually impossible. The only good side to the place is the staff who have been whipped into being courtious and attentive. They were, in fact, the only Greeks we saw smiling during our whole stay there. Newsflash! Wife's just told me that ninety percent of the staff are from Eastern Europe. That answers that question then!First and last time for us.

The hotel has a lot of potential but is let down by the noise from neighbouring rooms. The walls are so thin that you don't stand any chance of getting a good night's sleep what with young couples partying till 2.am and pensioners awaking at 6.am and playing the TV at full blast. As for the surrounding area: forget it! The beach it's unbelievably filthy and the nearby town of Nea Moudania is not much better. To give an example of what our tour group thought of the place, they ran a competion offering one weeks extra stay as first prize and two weeks extra stay as second prize.
