The Balvenie Distillery
Ranked #3 of 13 things to do in Dufftown

Me and my dad visited the distillery on a drizzly September afternoon. David, our tour guide, made the day bright and sunny. With a very extensive and insightful tour David made sure we (group of eight) all left with a smile on our faces. This was not only due to the lovely tasting at the end, mind you. David has been at the distillery for years and his experience, knowledge and insight of the Balvenie whisky making process combined with the fresh, humorous and never-dull way of talking about every step of the production is a winning formula for anyone interested in whisky and whisky making. A chance to bottle your own Balvenie at the end (not free, but worth it) is the icing on the cake. Anyone who stops by Dufftown should take the chance to visit. Do book in advance to avoid disappointment and to guarantee a great time.

The contrast between the Balvenie Distillery and the Glenfiddich Distillery was immediately noticable. Here was a place where volume was shunned for sheer quality. The handcrafted process was made more apparent for the Balvenie, giving it its distinguished character.

Oh, and 'Monkey Shoulder' - it's coined from the term the workers of the distilery seem to get after years of turning the barley on the floors....

If you have a discerning whisky drinker in your life, this is the place to bring them as a special treat. It is a comprehensive look at the art of making fine Scotch. However, someone with a keen interest, but not the taste would enjoy this too.

The tours are kept small and intimate. They are limited to 8 people and you have to book ahead. While this might be frustrating to people who just arrive on the spur of the moment wanting to see the the different processes that are still practiced, the actual experience makes you appreciate why Balvenie has chosen to differentiate itself from its more ubiquitous touristy neighbour, Glenfiddich. Balvenie has chosen to be an experience over raking in the tourist buck. I commend them for that.

From the beginning to the end, the tour was intimate, relaxed and fun. David Mair, our guide, was patient with our endless questions (a few of us are real geeks) and our constant stopping to take photographs. He was an endless source of knowledge and passion for the craft of distilling.

We got sample the product at various points in the process, and one of us bottled their own 20cl sample in Warehouse 24.

The sampling/nosing at the end was a superb end to the tour, and Mr Mair, after hearing that I quite liked the smokey Islay malts, let me try the Peated version of Balvenie. (Though I must admit prefering the Single Barrel Balvenie above all)

Two uninitiated scotch drinkers thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and our Balvenie afficanado was delighted.

I loved it. I recommend it. You should go. But book first.
