I’ve reviewed Pinky before, but the restaurant has upped its game of late and I thought it reasonable to register an updated opinion.

First off, what I’d really like to be able to do is give a four-and-a-half out of five, but I can’t, so I’m going to stick with a four. The improvement is marked, but it could be even better within the price bracket the restaurant is aiming at.

Pinky is sticking with traditional French food – which is very wise in my view – but has made much more of the presentation. The food is now very attractive indeed.

We started with slices of goats’ cheese baked in filo pastry and served on a bed of nicely dressed salad. It arrived at the right temperature (just warmed) and was full of flavour.

The main course was slow-cooked spice pork belly. This can be a fatty, gristly, horror story if done badly, but Pinky gets it right, and the result was excellent. It was served with sauté potatoes and creamed broccoli, which might sound like a curious thing to do with broccoli, but it worked rather well.

The only faint disappointment was the desserts. There was nothing wrong with them – the plates were emptied – but I think they could have been better. I had chocolate mousse, which was just a little too sweet for my taste, and my companion had Charlotte aux fraises, which could have been bigger on the fraises.

The bread supplied with the lunch was excellent. Quite a lot of restaurants in France seem to be serving supermarket baguettes these days. These, of course, are very inexpensive. Unhappily they are also lacking in flavour and have all the gastronomic character of cotton wool. Pinky, happily, is still buying bread from a proper baker and this was very much appreciated.

Service was fast, efficient & friendly, and with a 50cl carafe of red plus coffee we got out for €36 for two, which is pretty good value. Pinky offers a children’s menu and has a nice little garden for eating out on sunny days.

Pinky is not my favourite restaurant in Fontenay – that place belongs to the incomparable Hôtel de Vendée – but it provides a nice change and I will be eating there more often from now on.

We've visited Pinky a number of times. This is a favoured lunchtime haunt of office workers in Fonteny-le-Comte and the menu reflects this. The food is no-nonsense French staples: steaks, chicken served with cream & mushroom sauce, confit leg of duck, etc.

Desserts include homemade tarts as well as icecreams, ile flotant and chocolate mousse.

The fixed menu options are very good value. Service is quick, efficient, civil but not effusive. Businesslike rather than freindly.

There is a very nice outdoor terrance for summer dining, though obviously we didn't use it on this visit in December. Open in the evenings, but really more of lunchtime choicve for us.
