I can’t think of a positive superlative strong enough to describe our several-hour walk through the preserve. Donald, our guide, had an eye for hidden creatures and flora and taught as we went. But more than anything else we realized how important this huge preserve is to the ecosystem of this part of Costa Rica and we are filled with gratitude for what the people who bought and preserved it have done.

We walked around for the best part of three hours and enjoyed seeing amazing plants and wildlife and were met on the way back by the owner who provided splendid refreshments and talked to us about his work on this amazing reserve.

I have lived and experienced nature tours in Costa Rica for 15 years (and my husband his whole life) and this is hands-down the best experience we have ever had. Guide-owner Donald Varela's expertise and passion, combined with the secluded, crowd-free (almost people-free! ;) setting, make for an extraordinary visit. The diversity of species and ecosystems makes every phase of the walk exciting, and the beautiful, carefully designed platforms provided the perfect spot for our young daughter to rest up when she needed a break. Tapir Valley is absolutely beautiful, and the best part is that by booking a tour, you get to be proud that you are helping a hard-working local family preserve a critical piece of land for Costa Rica's biodiversity and the survival of the Baird's tapir. I absolutely can't recommend this amazing place highly enough.

We met Donald for an early morning walk through Tapir Valley nature reserve. We are nature lovers and thoroughly enjoy seeing the small insects , plants, trees, mammals and birds. Donald is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about sharing his love for nature. We loved walking quietly on the trails and going up into the viewing platforms. We saw an incredible number of different birds. He took his time and we were out there for many hours. We were greeted with a lovely surprise at the very end. The platforms and reception area are beautifully designed with murals and clean bathrooms. This experience is ideal for people who truly love nature and are not just out to see big things. This guided walk with Donald was definitely a highlight of our entire experience in Costa Rica.

We arranged through Natural Discovery a bird watching trip from the Westin Hotel which is quite a distance from The Tapir Reserve.
Laurens was our guide, an expert birder, and we were picked up at 4:30 am at our hotel and we were off. Wanted to get to the reserve just after sunrise.
The Reserve is spectacular. Well groomed trails, super habitat and we managed to see over 90 species of birds.
The private Reserve is a special place . No commercial activity, we were the only ones there, and the hard work and vision of the owners have made this project an excellent habitat for future generations.
Would be well worth staying at their B&B. We dropped by for a visit and the property looked very inviting.
Loved it !!
