I had no clue of what i was in for when I walked in. The owner greeted me at the door and even moved "his" car to accommodate mine in this beautiful, medieval tiny square on top of Nocera Umbra. The appetizer even included a truffle frittata that was out of this world (and I don't care for truffles!), the second course of the Tagliata Chianina, the most tender meat I have ever tasted. I ended up eating way too much but it was well worth it! All for 23 euros including wine!

Our expectations were high given the high scores at Tripadvisor, but the food itself was average at best. The antipasti looked better than the actual taste of it. The assortments of ham, cheese and fried vegetables did not exceed the 'supermarket' quality. Main course was even more disappointing. Pasta with truffles was overcooked, which is a rarity in Italy. Pasta with meat was OK, but nothing special. Fair prices, friendly service, but not a restaurant we'll be visiting again.

Some chefs know exactly how to cook simple meat dishes so that they turn out superbly every time. This is the case with La Piazza Grande - if you can call a large fillet steak cooked in fresh Umbrian truffles simple. Try also the tagliata a pachino e grano, and certainly order the large antipastone, which presents a variety of excellent local salami and cheeses. This is a typical Umbrian family restaurant, with sincere friendly service, honest high-quality local ingredients, a maximum of quality with a minimum of frills. The restaurant is in the tiny historic centre of Nocera Umbra, itself an experience.

Date of Visit: November 28, 2011 While staying in Spello we tried to eat in a small place in Valtopina which happened to be closed on Monday. Rather than return to Spello we ventured up the road and promised to turn around if we found nothing within 15 minutes. We stumbled into Nocera Umbra which was the largest town beyond Valtopina and parked near the main road at paid parking. There was a small sign indicating a restaurant on the piazza so we walked and walked and finally reached what looked like a patio and nothing more. What a decieving surprise!

We entered into a cozy room escorted by two lovely waitresses. The room had only 5 tables and each once was nicely appointed. The plate sitting on the charger was named for the restaurant which was an introduction to a sublime meal. The menu was extensive and narrowing down the choice was quite a job. We decided on the antipasto which contained a slice of polenta attoped with a blue cheese slightly melted, prosciutto nicely and generously sliced adjoined to another type of salumi. The plate also contained a bruschettoa with marinated sliced herbed tomatoes, slices of cheese containing truffles and another with walnuts, bruschetta with olive oil and salt. A garlic glove stood on top of a toothpick to rub on the bread. To accompany the dishes were three spoons of a variety of honeys: lemon, green apple and cherry. What a clever and beautiful presentation!

My husband had the tagliatelle with truffles and I had the tortellini with a very generous helping of truffles, both sliced and shaved. Oh my! It was like diamonds in your mouth, a little crunchy but sparkling with every bite. I looked around to see if anyone was looking at the smile on my face as every bite delighted my senses.

My husband ordered the filet which was the star of the show. We have never eaten anything so tender, flavorful and so beautiffuly displayed. The filet was very large sitting on one side of the plate with a sagrantino wine sauce and small drizzle of balsamic vinegar to one little corner. The edible adornment was a sliced potato which was colored red and then formed into the shape of a delicate rose and deep fried. Neither of us could look at anything else because it was mesmerizing. How creative and beautiful and delicious! I am afraid to try this one at home for fear that it would never compare to this gem. The meat was so tender you could really cut it with a fork. Although we were stuffed we did not let a single piece remain. And the side dish was a chicory-like green sauteed and perfect. It was too bad we were so full becauswe we could not finish it.

The dessert was randomly chosen from a very large selection but we were so full that we couldn't pass it up considering the history the chef established with us and yet could not order two of them. It was a torte of apple and pear with a warm custard-like filling topped with a fine shower of powdered sugar. Chef must be an artist because he drew a picture of a pear and colored it with different sauces and then wrote Pere off to the side.

He was concerned about how we liked our meal and asked at the table if all was to our satisfaction. I wanted to kiss him but settled for a picture with him.

You must go here no matter where you are. We may return before leaving. The service was friendly without being intrusive. The waitress was informative considering our very immature Italian and she tolerated our inability to speak quickly. The atmosphere was charming, small and what you think of when someone says tipico D'Italia. The meal was a total of 58 euros with wine and all I described. It has been the best meal yet. We have a few more days in Italy and will be eating in more of the restaurants in Spello. Chef has raised the bar and I think it will be difficult for anyone to compare. I will post photos when I return to the states.
