Gran Caribe Club Villa Cojimar
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Cayo Guillermo
Reviewed February 21, 2013

My husband and I went on a last minute getaway to villa cojimar and thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather was great. We upgraded to an ocean view villa, it was inexpensive to do so and we had the ocean at our back door and the pool at our front door, what could be better. We left gifts in our room each day of toiletries etc and it was cleaned everyday and beautiful towel art of hearts and swans. The ocean was fabulous, pool was great with a bar and ham and cheese paninis, they made fabulous pinacoladas and monitors, very generous with the alcohol. There was also a bar in the lobby that made great Spanish coffees or whatever you wished. We changed our money at the airport and got plenty of pesos for tipping, but they also changed money at the front desk. There was a gift shop as well as a convenience type store where you could obtain anything forgotten and it was not expensive. Water wasn't an issue as they sell bottled and use purified for the ice cubes. We saw the odd chigger on us at the beach but was not an issue easy to flick off. The food was basic but we managed to mix it up, went to the Italian and cuban restaurants in the evening, you only had to reserve in the am, they were both wonderful. Also went to the lobster shack down the beach which was great also, had to reserve the day before so they knew how much to catch! If you are looking for a nice relaxing getaway I would recommend this resort, a little dated but very comfortable. I have to wonder why people go to cuba and whine so much, we thought it was fabulous!!!!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to an ocean view villa, very nice!

This is my 7th time in Cayo G I stay at all the other hotels twice. This hotel is the least fancy but it has some good things going for it. The room on the water was awesome nice and clean with a great view. The bar service and the grounds were adequate considering the great price. The food however is absolutely horrible even by Cuba standards. The valentine's day diner was fantastic they had everything and it was all very good. Every other day it's was terrible. So they are able to make good food but they don't I guess it's a budget thing. The orange juice was water with food colouring and sugar it was so clear you could see thru it. The bacon was 95% fat. There was nothing to eat for breakfast except the long lines for omelettes but I don't like omelettes. The few fruits they had were dried out and full of flies they probably recycle them from day to day. If they could up the quality of the food a little bit this place would be a great value. Between the 700$ dollar a week Cojimar and the 1400$ dollar a week Melia there is room for a middle ground. I would gladly pay a little bit more to get better food.

My wife and I went to cojimar from the 16th of January-30 January 2013.Its a smaller resort, but thats what we like, you really get to know everybody that works there.Great service,No BUGs as I was reading that there were a lot of bugs,no ants either, clean rooms, done beautifully every day.Cuban food is Cuban food,so if you pay very little for your trip, don't continually whine about the food. The beach is cleaned every day, grounds are being worked on every day,so over all it was good.Met some new friends from Austria,Ontario, and Manchester England who were just super to spend time with, they all enjoyed the resort too.10 minutes gets you to Pilar Beach, one of the best beaches in the world. This is our 23rd trip to Cuba,so you get used to enjoying smaller resorts. This was our 6th time to the Cayo coco/cayo Guillermo area.Did the boat excursion, and snorkeled which was worth it.The only problem I had was getting beer,or drinks served to me at the lobby bar, even if I was the only one standing there, but, all the ladies that we had met, walked right up and service was great from then on.Good people, good beaches, good times.Oh and when we walked up the beach,we went into Iberostar, and Melia and were served drinks,so overall it was a good trip.

Room Tip: We found that if you are going to Cuba, and you think there's going to be bugs, request before lea...

Came back Feb 11 after 2 weeks. If you like to relax, lots of sun and beautiful beaches/water, this is the place. It may be rated low but it exceeded my expectations. This my 4th trip to Cuba and have stayed all over and usualy in a 4.5-5* resort. This trip we took a chance on what they consider a 2.5-3*. At first I was not sure we had made the right decision...the hotel is old. We got a room in the new bungalows and was pleased. They are only 3 years old and clean, but a little dark(looks like a cabin). But we came for the ocean front bungalow and after a few days of checking at the front desk one came available. For 20 convertable pesos a day we up graded. Well worth it. Food is not great but always found something to eat...yummy cooked bananas. Lobby bartenders were friendly, entertaining and made a great cappaccino. Most of the staff was friendly and willing to help, in Cuban time. If you like to kite board or want to learn this is the place. Constant work was being done by the gardeners, new path lights were being installed and new 2 storey bungalows are being built. Not all rooms come with water to drink, so bring some or a container. Also there is no bank at this hotel. There is one is next door but, not open on the weekends, so the line up/wait on monday is long. The bartenders can make change, but at a cost. Interenet was not available due to the fact the did not have time cards to sell, the hotel next door didn't have any either.

At the entrance to the property you find the Flamingos and if you are lucky a crocodile or two. Across from the flamingo is the dolphins and a boating centre. The boat centre offers Jeep Safari, speed boats, snorkeling or the two combined. You can book with them or your rep, there was no price difference. We walked in and booked ourselves and it was great! We heard that the Catamaran trip and food they served was good. No bad things was said about any of the excersions other than the Havana trip was canceled. On the bridge you can watch locals fish. We spotted a barracuda just of shore.

If you need an outing you can catch the double decker bus for 5 pesos, which you can get on and off for the day. A trip to Play Pilar is only 2 stops away or you can rent a scooter for 32 pesos a day, which includes fuel and ride there your self. Food at the restaurant was good with fair prices. A lounger is available for 2 pesos for the day and drinks are also available on the beach. Playa Flamingo is the other direction on Cayo Coco. It too has a restaurant(it looked fairly new) and a beach, which I found to be a little rocky. This beach is in between 2 new hotels that are being built.

Yes some people had some issues. Our air conditioning didn't work, but this was fixed with in less than 10 minutes. Would I bring kids here, probably not. Would I go again? Yes I would.

People come for many differnt reasons, but we all came for the same thing, a great vacation.Take it for what it is and enjoy! Thanks to all the people we met on our trip, you made it great.

Hasta pronto Cuba!

Room Tip: Wooden bungalows are in the 300s, check map of hotel for other ocean front bungalows.

This was my second time at this resort and a very big deception. We had to change rooms twice because of bugs ( this year even with sprays it was hell), the doctor on the site spoke only spanish neither english nor french( i admit he tried to help us just he was not able to communicate). In the kitchen they served you with food from floor ,and at the reception they were making bad jokes about the tourists in spanish.(when asked them why are doing this the answer was that a lot of them does not understand it anyway). It is deceiving because is a good place for families with kids ( the entertaining staff is making his best that you enjoy your stay), the location is great and a quiet place where you could rest.

Room Tip: If you have bugs in your room dont' t hesitate to ask for another one or for exterminator servic...

Nice vacation, but quite different from when I went 6 years ago. Like the other reviews stated - don't expect much for fancy food when you go here. You go here if you want the gorgeous beaches and a cheap vacation! My husband and I went for $1200-cdn all inclusive from Sat to Wed and it was a perfect short getaway! Rooms are fine. They are clean, have nice showers and hot water. Our maid didn't make any fancy towel creations (like other pictures showed), and we even tipped AND gave her bags of stuff from home. The service at the bars and at the two Al a Carte restaurants were GREAT and there were no complaints there, but the service at the main buffet was TERRIBLE! If you don't put a tip on the table before you start eating then good luck getting anything to drink. We mainly got our own drinks the whole time or brought our own from the bar. I realize that tipping IS important and trust me, we weren't shy on that, but it shouldn't be EXPECTED from the Cubans for service. It's still their job, just like anyone's job in the service industry. Book early and reserve for 2 days at a time if you want to eat at the Al a Carte restaurants, they fill up fast. Re: currency exchange, you have to go to the next resort over (The Iberostar) for Cuban Tourist Pesos. This resort doesn't have currency exchange anymore - which was QUITE annoying! You MUST visit Playa Pillar Beach - it's absolutely AMAZING! We spent 2 days there! You can catch a bus from your resort for 5 pesos for a full day of travel. Lastly, be careful about eating the food off the resorts. We got sick (E-coli) from either the food or the ice on the Catamaran Excursion. It would be VERY wise to take "Dukoral" before you go to Cuba. We wish we had! Have fun!

Room Tip: Upgrade to an ocean view room if you can. It's a cheap upgrade and totally worth the view!
