“Lovely peaceful week on the beach”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

We just came home from a great week in this resort (April 5-12). This review comes from the point of view of a 52 year old couple from the east coast of Canada who love to swim in the ocean, relax in the sun, eat fresh fish and fruit, walk on the beach, and have a few cocktails while enjoying live music.

Overall, we have no hesitation in recommending this resort as a place to have a quiet, restful week. Not high-end, but great value for the money with lovely grounds and excellent service.

Rooms: We pre-booked an upgraded room for $40 a week, and it was worth it. Not fancy, but clean and well-kept with a comfortably firm king-size bed and wonderful balcony overlooking the beach. We specified king bed, balcony and higher-floor as special requests. Maid service was excellent.

Beach: The beach is narrow at high tide, with a wee bit of seaweed on windy days, but otherwise clean, and lovely for people who spend a lot of time in the water. A bit of gentle wave action but no undertow or rip tide.

Food: We ate lunch at the Ranchon Marina on the beach, which is smaller, less formal and less crowded than the main buffet restaurant. Less selection than the main buffet but wonderful fresh grilled fish. For breakfast and supper at the main buffet, we strongly advise the "cooking stations" where you can have your omelette, stir-fry, fish or pasta freshly cooked in front of you. Chill out and chat with the cook or other guests waiting with you, and you'll be happier with your meal than with items that sat under a heat lamp. Good selection of fruit and vegetables. We enjoyed our meals at the Mexican (try the fajitas), Italian (try the chicken) and Cuban (try the grouper) restaurants. If you can't get a reservation at any of these, drop by anyway and see if they have no-shows or cancellations. Worked for us.

Entertainment: The house band in the lobby bar is excellent, and play Cuban standards from early evening on. Dancers in the nightly shows are quite good; we enjoyed the Boogie Nights and Cuba shows.

Service: Was friendly and professional. This is a very hard-working staff who deserve your courtesy and patience as they try and meet everyone's needs.

Gym and fitness: There is a simple work-out room. Some of the cardio equipment is in need of repair- there is likely an issue getting parts and labour to fix broken Life Fitness equipment, but we did use the stationary bikes and elliptical machine. (Kind of crazy to go to the gym at a beach resort anyway, isn't it?)

Would like to add one note, based on some other postings.Try not to look at individual reviews as the absolute truth about any resort, and get your information from a variety of sources, based on your own particular needs. Haven't we all had a neighbour or colleague who always finds something to complain about?

We were there the first wk in April. Had a lovely renovated room on the ground floor facing the ocean. The beach was beautiful. The shows in the evening were really good...energetic staff! I did feel a bit isolated on this island, although it was not at all far from the airport. The food was good and the weather was perfect!

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 8&10 yr old kids) just came back from a week at Iberostar Daiquiri in Cayo Guillermo. (April 4-11, 2014) We had a fantastic week. The highlights were: hot sun, amazing beach, fun snorkelling around the pier, unexpectedly good food (a few dinners, esp at a-la-carte's that were exceptionally great!), great cappuccinos, pleasant staff, uncrowded pool, clean rooms and an ocean view from our Varadero 3rd floor room, plus great excursions.

I will re-highlight the beach again. It really was fantastic: a great variety in tides, depth, waves, sun or shade, places with other people or places more secluded. Fantastic for kids to play (and adults, too!) We brought our own snorkel gear and got good use out of it, as well as our frisbee, football, inflated tubes and sand shovels. If we were to return, I'd definitely look into kite boarding as 2 schools are within easy walking distance and looks like fun.

We enjoyed 2 great excursions: Catamaran to snorkel & visit Playa Pilar + Jeep Safari where we toured Moron, visited a beautiful mountain vista, did a boat tour through some mangroves, and then a lovely ranch for lunch and brief horseback ride - plus our tour guide was great at giving us insight into the Cuban way of life. We would highly recommend both of these excursions for people staying in the area. If we were to return, we would look into tailoring a tour ourselves - which we didn't know was an option.

As for the resort, we knew we weren't staying at a 5* resort, and expected what we got. Yes, it was a little 'tired' looking, the beds weren't the most comfy, and our AC wasn't working at first (but was addressed immediately when mentioned - we also found out that the maid for our room also reported it for us). There were some areas needing repair, but nothing that interfered with safety or our trips' enjoyment. The biggest thing for me was that some of the public bathroom stalls (ie - near the pool) could be messy (full-to-overflowing waste baskets) and some were missing the toilet seats - which my daughter wouldn't squat over. And there were times that the public washrooms were fairly smelly. This would be my biggest complaint about the resort - but I figured we were close enough to choose to use our own room and its cleaned-daily washroom if preferred. As the resort was small, it was great with kids to be able to run back and forth to our room easily.

We are not the type to return to the same location or resort, as there are simply too many places we wish to visit in the world, let alone the Caribbean! However, if we were, I would consider this place again, both as a resort and as a part of Cuba. I would recommend it to friends and family as well - although with some heads-up not to expect the same kind of attention to detail you may find in higher end resorts. For the price it is a great value in my opinion.

I took the time to fill in a survey while there to suggest a few things that require attention: 1 - more daytime monitoring of public-area washrooms. 2 - later out-of-sun activities (like the ping pong, games and pool table) as they closed at 5 pm, leaving little to do after dinner. 3- More variety in the evening shows. The evening shows were ok - the dancers were very talented (as well as beautiful to look at) - but we didn't feel like watching dancing every night. We did really enjoy the black light theatre show on our last night, and our kids enjoyed being in a small production while there.

We were all very happy with the food we had while there. Quite honestly, that was one of my bigger concerns with going to Cuba, as we are used to very good quality food and like to eat out at nice restaurants. We all found plenty to eat and enjoy at every meal. We often took advantage of the cook-in-front-of-you stations in the buffet. Good omelets, stir fries, fish, fajitas, etc. The seafood and fish were exceptional (and as someone who grew up by the ocean, I am particular about that). There were always vegetables and fruit to choose from - maybe not with as much variety as some would like, but we never were bored with our choices. And as someone who doesn't eat gluten and is very health-conscious with our choices, I had no problem finding choices that made us all happy and full and feeling great all week. We went to all 3 a-la-cartes, with our favourite being the Italian. (the calamari and seafood lasagna were delicious!) Even the wine was nice, particularly the red. Lastly, I'll make mention of the cappuccino's from El Mojito - they were our favourite drinks of the week by far - and served by a lovely staff.

We paid a great price for a family of four and feel the value we got exceeded our expectations. For us, the highlights outweighed the small pitfalls at least 10:1, if not 20:1. All in all it was a glorious week for all of us and we will all have amazing memories of our week at Iberostar Daiquiri and Cayo Guillermo.

Dear guest,

It’s a pleasure to hear you had such a great time at out hotel with you family.

Thank you for nice general comment about of our hotel, beach, staff… it’s nice to know we fulfill your needs regarding food, one of the most the feared aspect in a hotel as you said.

We appreciate also the advice you give us to improve in some area as public bathroom and the show in the night, we can say we are already working on them, it’s really important for us to hear the not so good things about the hotel to try to improve them.

We are sad to hear you normally don’t come back to the same place but we really hope you will change your mind.

We travel to Guillermo twice a year because we do kitesurfing. There is a designated area for kitesurfers on the right side of the beach. Good resort, pack lots of bug spray. Decent variety of food. Beach has seaweed, but kept very clean. Half of the resort has been renovated, so try to get a room in the new section. Entertainment is the best of 4 resorts in the Guillermo. Comparing to Melia we love it more, but if you compare the beach and kitesurfing area Sol has a better beach for both. We love this resort and will definitely come back soon.

Reviewed April 8, 2014

My wife and I stayed from March 29th to April 5th and have nothing but good things to say about the Iberostar Daiquiri.

Check-In
We arrived around noon and check –in was easy and fast. I’ve read comments from people who complain that their rooms weren’t’ ready when they tried to checked in. Note that the check-in time is 3pm so don’t expect it to be ready before that. What we did was packed shorts and sunscreen in our carry-on luggage just in case our room wasn’t ready so we could still enjoy the resort.

Room
We paid for one of the renovated rooms and were very happy with it. We always had lots of hot water for showers. My only suggestion for the resort would be to add a dresser as there are only two small bedside tables and one other drawer in the closest to put your clothes away.
The resort has repainted the buildings on the one side of the resort and they look really good. Some of these buildings also contain the renovated the rooms, (Camaguey, Holguin, Guardalavaca and Baracoa buildings). My suggestions would be to pay for one the renovated rooms.

Beach
I was down at the beach by 7am to save two chairs that were in the front row, but there was still shade in the other rows at 9am. No issues with swapping out our beach towels. Bring a mask and snorkel as there’s lots of fish that swim around the pier. The sunrises were beautiful and I captured some amazing photographs. It was very windy the week we were there so the bugs weren’t bad.

Pool
I read some comments that people thought the pool was too small, but whenever I walked by, half of the chairs seemed empty so I’m not sure there needs to be a larger pool.

Food
We both found the food to be very good, both at the buffet and the a la cartes.

Staff
The staff were amazing and always seemed to have a smile.

Excursions
I’ll post separate review on the two excursions that we took, but the power boat tour which is only 5 minutes from the resort was so much fun. We also went to Pilar beach using the shuttle and thought it was beautiful.

Flight
We flew with Air Canada Rouge and didn’t have any issues other than the fact that neither of the planes had TV monitors anywhere in the aircraft. This made for a long flight.

Special thanks to Raul in Public Relations at the Daiquiri. I e-mailed the resort ahead of time with some requests and he fulfilled all of them.

I would highly recommend the Iberostar Daiquiri.

Room Tip: Pay for the renovated rooms.

We stayed March 19-26. After our Canadian winter, Oboy did that sun feel good!! We chose not to upgrade to a superior (renovated) room as we knew we wouldn't be spending anytime there, other to sleep anyway. Our room, in the Varadero bldg, main floor, was a tad beat up, but what the heck. We were close to everything..minute's from the beach, pool, buffet, lobby bar. The Daiquiri is a small resort, and very isolated. Only 3 other's in Cayo Guillermo, but a couple new one's under construction near Pilar Beach. The food was exceptional!! We never suffered any type of stomach complaint. The sand flea's were terrible (not the resort's fault)! We were covered with bite's and no amount of repellent worked on us. Other's had none. We also had no AC. Blew air only, no cooling. The compressor was obviously *done*. Reported the problem, but it was never resolved, simply because it couldn't be. The elusive part(s) are on order, and we know how thing's go on Cuban time. It did not deter our holiday one bit. Half of the hotel was refurbished already, and the other half is scheduled to close the end of May, until it's completed. Had a great time and can't wait to go back for the 15th time!!
