We just came home from a great week in this resort (April 5-12). This review comes from the point of view of a 52 year old couple from the east coast of Canada who love to swim in the ocean, relax in the sun, eat fresh fish and fruit, walk on the beach, and have a few cocktails while enjoying live music.
Overall, we have no hesitation in recommending this resort as a place to have a quiet, restful week. Not high-end, but great value for the money with lovely grounds and excellent service.
Rooms: We pre-booked an upgraded room for $40 a week, and it was worth it. Not fancy, but clean and well-kept with a comfortably firm king-size bed and wonderful balcony overlooking the beach. We specified king bed, balcony and higher-floor as special requests. Maid service was excellent.
Beach: The beach is narrow at high tide, with a wee bit of seaweed on windy days, but otherwise clean, and lovely for people who spend a lot of time in the water. A bit of gentle wave action but no undertow or rip tide.
Food: We ate lunch at the Ranchon Marina on the beach, which is smaller, less formal and less crowded than the main buffet restaurant. Less selection than the main buffet but wonderful fresh grilled fish. For breakfast and supper at the main buffet, we strongly advise the "cooking stations" where you can have your omelette, stir-fry, fish or pasta freshly cooked in front of you. Chill out and chat with the cook or other guests waiting with you, and you'll be happier with your meal than with items that sat under a heat lamp. Good selection of fruit and vegetables. We enjoyed our meals at the Mexican (try the fajitas), Italian (try the chicken) and Cuban (try the grouper) restaurants. If you can't get a reservation at any of these, drop by anyway and see if they have no-shows or cancellations. Worked for us.
Entertainment: The house band in the lobby bar is excellent, and play Cuban standards from early evening on. Dancers in the nightly shows are quite good; we enjoyed the Boogie Nights and Cuba shows.
Service: Was friendly and professional. This is a very hard-working staff who deserve your courtesy and patience as they try and meet everyone's needs.
Gym and fitness: There is a simple work-out room. Some of the cardio equipment is in need of repair- there is likely an issue getting parts and labour to fix broken Life Fitness equipment, but we did use the stationary bikes and elliptical machine. (Kind of crazy to go to the gym at a beach resort anyway, isn't it?)
Would like to add one note, based on some other postings.Try not to look at individual reviews as the absolute truth about any resort, and get your information from a variety of sources, based on your own particular needs. Haven't we all had a neighbour or colleague who always finds something to complain about?
