Reviewed September 2, 2013

We just came back from a week at Iberostar Daquiri. This used to be a very decent hotel that held a special place in our heart. This was our 4th stay at this resort since 2009 and there have been some positive changes but unfortunately also many negative ones.

Positives:

- The hotel is currently being renovated. The lobby has been repainted and there is new furniture.
- Some palapas on the beach are new and others have been repaired.
- Beautiful beach with crystal clear warm waters that we love so much.
- Mature gardens with palm trees on the beach and palapas between palm trees.
- We noticed less beach erosion this year.

Negatives:

- Many palm trees on the beach have been cut and no new ones were planted to replace them. These trees are what makes this beach so special and dear to us. They also provide additional shade.

- Only two beers at arrival and no beer every two days as before

- Horrible service at breakfast. The buffet is supposed to open at 7h00 am and they are barely ready by 8h00 am. Even then, you have to stand there and keep asking for an egg or a piece of cheese. Otherwise good luck unless you do not mind surviving on toasts and old fruit form the day before. This was not the case during our previous visits. The food and service at noon and in the evening was OK.

- Very lax or inexistent security. We were unfortunate to be there during the two weeks of Cuban holidays (last week of August and first week of September). Over 50% of the guests at the hotel were Cuban. Also, there is a little Cuban restaurant between the two resorts (the Iberostar and the Melia) and everyday a busload of Cubans comes to enjoy the beach. The problem is that the Cubans not staying at the hotel completely overtook that part of the beach and the pier belonging to the hotel, came to the resort, were using the loungers and the boats from the marina, and were getting food and drinks from Cubans staying there. The result of this entire fiasco was a very loud and noisy beach. These people do not talk but scream even if they stand next to each other. We and several other guests had to go over the part of the beach were the hotel was closed for construction to get some relative quite and peace. Not an ideal situation. The beach was also not as nice there with more rocks and vegetation.

Overall, an OK holiday, but we are saddened by the overall downward slide of this resort and will not come back unless things improve.

We travelled as a couple in mid august. Yes, half the resort was closed but this actually proved to be a great thing as we felt that we had the place to our own. We never had trouble finding sunbeds, we never had to wait for drinks or food, etc... Yes, I do agree the rooms need to be updated. On the other hand, you only sleep there so it wasn't an issue. 2 things made this trip: the beach which is absolutely breathtaking and the staff which is amazing. They always smile, they work really really hard and I was disappointed to see that not many people leave tips. The food was always good (À la carte restaurants and buffet).

The negative points: housekepping wasn't the best and the hotel rooms and grounds need some renos (they are working on that, right now...).

I really miss our long walks on the beach....

Basically, good resort but will be awesome once the renos are done. Hopefully we will be back next year.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview room, as it is beautiful!

Usually we stay at the MCG, so I am afraid I have to compare the Daiquiri to MCG. Our room was very nice and everything worked fine. The beach is very narrow so there was'nt a lot of room when the tide came in, the sunbeds needed replacing IMO, they were very well worn. Now the food, it had got very good reviews, but I have to say this is were the hotel let itself down. The choice was very limited and of poor quality, in fact I struggled to find anything I wanted to eat each night. Maybe its because the hotel was closing the week after we left for refurb and they were running the stocks down.
The evening entertainment in the lobby was too loud for our tastes, you could not hold a conversation. As soon as it started converstations stopped, and this was every night. The actual bands were excellent but much too loud for the lobby, again IMO. I prefer a quieter hotel. I wish the Daiquiri all the best for its opening after its refurbs, but the MCG still is my favourite in the Cayos.

How we can understand the hotel didn’t met your expectations Sporting limited, let me make a clarification, it is true that this week we were at the last days before hotel closes for renovations, however the services were guaranteed until closing, limited the amount as it was very little the amount of guests remaining for those days .

We have reopened the hotel last August 1st, the hotel is working with all the services involved, if you return at another time to this place you're welcome to spend a day at our hotel, so check our product benefit in opting now.

We stayed at Iberostar Daiquiri from Aug.11th to Aug.18th 2013 and we were so happy that we picked that resort. It was close for renovation and had just reopened Aug. 1st so it was very quiet then it got busier towards the end of the week. The resort and the grounds are very well kept, the food was very good. There was a lot of variety in the buffet every morning, lunch and supper and we ate very well every time! The beach is beautiful, the pools are nice too. Lucy at the kids club was so nice with our boys, they loved the activities; ping pong contest, bowling, archery, etc. The staff was always happy and smiling; Rosa, Evelyne and Tita were our favorite waitresses their service was excellent. We loved our stay and we really want to go back next summer!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Varadero complexe (room 4235) with ocean view - stunning!!! VIP package (leaving C...

We have been returning to Iberostar for several years and last years was very disappointing, the food was not appealing and in two weeks we had bacon twice, one toaster, everyone complained about the change in the beer, the house keeping was not up to par but there seemed to be a lot of tension with the staff even thought they kept a smile on thier face. we have met many friends there and have kept in contact, our problem is to plan our vacation place even though we all liked Iberostar Daiquiri and would like to know if any inprovements have been made.

Thank you J Courtney

This resort is definately one of my favourites out of all the resorts we have stayed at. The beach was fantastic!! Beautiful, calm, clear water, you can walk out for long distance. Lots of palm trees and never had any trouble finding shade at the beach. This resort is great for small children. The grounds were lush and well taken care of. It is close to the airport.

The only negatives were the entertainment wasn't the best we have seen, and bug spraying was done at dinner time with open air restaurants.

We travelled here as a group of two couples in March 2013. We booked and travelled with Thomas Cook. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with cocktails. Check in was quick enough. Reception staff were ok. Didn't have a problem.

The room - they were not as bad as I thought it would be as we knew that it was due to be shut for renovations. The bathroom was the worse, the shower was always broken, hot and cold or no pressure or both. No plug in sink so hard for my partner to shave. Tiles were cracked and mouldy, grout was rotten and bath was stained. We had an engineer round several times for the shower but it was never fixed.

Housekeeping Service- One word. Poor! Sheets were not clean. Maid would take all our towels and not replace them. We had to go down to reception several times to get towels so we could wash. Toilet roll was an issue. Not so much in our room but in our friends (they were only in the next room though). They had to get toilet roll from our room, but about a week into the holiday we were all ill, so a lack of toilet roll isn't great. We spoke to other holidaymakers and they suffered the same. Still don't know what make us ill, we stuck to low risk food and we were still ill 2 weeks after we returned to the UK. Corridors were also a disgrace. They were not cleaned often and entertainment staff were using rooms under us and were very loud and one morning there was food thrown all over, a full catering size tub of ice cream was left and bottles of rum by the stairs. And they were there for 3 days in tropical temperatures. There were bugs all over them. We had to ask staff to remove it.

Pool - a bit tired but it was clean. Pool bar was good. Staff seemed to ignore you sometimes and looked like they couldn't be bothered. Drinks were always nice. Plenty of sun beds. We only struggled on a few days to get beds. Some of the sunbeds were broken and they were dirty but we didn't spend much time on them :) The pool was always freezing though. And I mean ice cold. I don't know why with it being in full sun everyday. Coldest pool I have ever experienced. Pool towels are a nightmare to get hold of. We only managed to change the towel twice. We just used our own.

Beach - Beautiful beach, stunning! Clean, quiet, long, crystal clear water. Cant say a bad word. It is small at full tide, but it didn't bother me.

Food - the first two days were amazing. Mexican one night and stir fry the next. And then everyday after that it was stir fry. Just got boring. same night after night. Raw food made an appearance a lot. Salad bar was nice and the desserts were ok. Breakfast was best. Pancakes, donuts, fresh cooked eggs, toast and fresh bread. Couldn't fault it.

Entertainment - only saw a few shows and they were quite good. Pool entertainment was just funny. They worked really hard and were always happy.

Lobby Bar - Drinks were nice. Mojitos and strawberry daiquiri. mmmm. Staff were nice. Sometimes you got table service and sometimes you didn't. Depended.

The Bank - Well, where to start. My partner and friends partner queued for four hours to change money which we needed for a trip. There was only one member of staff on to say that people from other hotels had to come here to get their currency. One couple behind them that they got chatting didn't bring their passports which you need to take, had to go back and get them and queue again. Me and my friend went to find them and there was nearly riots because the hotel was doing its banking their and it took two hours. Ridiculous. A waste of half a day they will never get back. Get more staff!!

Trips - we did the catamaran. Amazing. Highly recommend. We did the VIP one. (no kids) Its a brill day out. We also did the speedboats which was great fun. We did a trip to the mainland which was just a bit of a ploy to take you into shops. It was good to see some of Cuba but we just got dragged rounds shops that we were not interested in. Probably wouldn't do it again.

We had a fab holiday with great friends and made great memories, but the hotel was tired. We probably wouldn't visit Cayo Guillermo again as we have been twice now and its limited as to what you can do there. We would visit the mainland maybe next time.
