We enjoyed a very pleasant and relaxing stay at Miri-Joy. We had the ground floor apartment in the two-storey block which provided an outdoor porch area with table and chairs, a small living room with TV, a kitchen equipped with fridge/freezer, cooker & hob, plenty of crockery, cutlery and pans plus a small dining table - there is a washing machine in an adjacent outhouse, washing lines around the back of the property, and an iron and ironing board. The two bedrooms - one twin and one double - each have good hanging and drawer space along with modern air-conditioning units. The bathroom is compact but has a spacious shower area and the shower works well. The apartment is basically furnished and equipped but was spotlessly clean, plenty of towels (including beach towels) and spare bed linen were provided, the Wi-Fi works very well, the small garden space is well maintained and the property overall is very secure.
Miri-Joy is situated at the north end of the west coast, above Speightstown. This is amore 'rural' area of the island with a feel of local Barbados rather than the upmarket, tourist-focussed environment found further down the coast, and the apartment rental rates reflect this. There is pasture land around the property where sheep graze during the day and the local children fly kites and play 'street tennis'. The excellent Fish Pot restaurant is only 5 minutes walk away and has good beach facilities plus a spa in its adjacent property The Good Harbour Hotel. There are also good beaches in the opposite direction, slightly further but still within walking distance and close to Port St Charles Yacht Club which has a restaurant, sun deck and small beach open to non-members.
We would strongly recommend hiring a car for stays here, local buses do run along the road which is only two minutes walk away but the service is not regular and taxis are expensive so a car really is advisable to reach shops, restaurants, other beaches etc. Speightstown is less than 10 minutes drive away and has a good selection of shops and supermarkets, several banks with cash machines plus some bars and restaurants.
Property owners Pauline and John were very helpful in arranging a taxi from the airport and basic groceries on arrival, they are always available by phone to assist if required but are not at all intrusive. John works nearby and can be quickly on hand if needed. Overall we would highly recommend this property, and definitely look at returning there, however potential guests need to bear in mind this is comfortable but basic accommodation situated some distance from the main activities and amenities found lower down the west coast. If you are wanting a quiet, relaxing stay in an area which is more the 'real' rather than tourist Barbados then Miri-Joy is certainly a recommendation for you to consider.
