“Good location, friendly staff, happy with our choice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

We spent a week at the South Gap Hotel. We enjoyed our stay and I would suggest it to anyone who isn't sensitive to noise.

Good:
The staff! Everyone was very friendly and accommodating to our requests. They provided suggestions, directions, and were willing to help and prompt to do so when we asked. This includes not only the front desk, but the bartenders and other staff as well.
The location: There isn't a beach right in front of the hotel, but the view is still great (you won't get a good sunset shot though). It's within a short walking distance from two beaches Sandy (Worthing) and Dover. Sandy beach has a great sand bar and tons of sea turtles to see.

Not as good:
Again the location: This hotel is a very active nightlife scene and even has the portable police processing center in front of it (we never felt unsafe, but I think it was more so for the drunks). Every night there was some level of noise with it peaking on Saturday night until 4 a.m. We aren't sensitive to noise so we slept through it pretty well for all but that night.

Neutral, but noted:
The restaurant was one of the better values nearby for breakfast. The food was good and not terribly expensive. The Bajan bakes are a mix between a cinnamon muffin and a donut for reference :)
Amenities: Nothing at the hotel blew me away, but everything they had was sufficient for a nice stay. The bed was average, but not uncomfortable which is the most important thing to me. They had a microwave, fridge, tabletop hot plates, pots/pans, and cooking utensils. A nice balcony too.

fortnight vacation nearly finished. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you.The rooms are comfortable..maybe could do with upgrading in the future. All rooms open onto the ocean with balconies..views to die for....and the sound of the waves crashing against the terrace wall lulls you to sleep. The karaoke bar opposite is quite noisy, but shut your bathroom window and leave the balcony doors open if you don't like the noise. Not all rooms have safety deposit boxes...mine did as I requested one, having been burgled last time I visited and stayed on the West coast. Only downside is no direct beach access...but Dover beach is 5 minutes walk down the road. The hotel offers laundry service at a small charge, and the bar staff are great. Food is good and competitively priced. I wouldn't recommend above ground floor for older people or disabled as there is no lift. Very nice rooms on the pool terrace with no stairs to climb !!!Mostly couples and not many young people, but people return here year after year...so that says a lot.

We stayed at South Gap recently and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel, we generally do go with some pre-conceived ideas about what to expect as did I this time, we normally go All-in,
I have to say that for our first time self catering in Barbados we absolutely enjoyed our stay at this hotel an awful lot more than I thought we would.
The hotel is in the heart of the Gap which we know well and has a marvellous sea view...but no beach...,however as I said we know the place well and know that Dover Beach is only 5 mins stroll so no problem.
The room was quite lovely well equipped with fridge freezer, 2 hotplates and a compact kitchenette area, plenty of storage space and comfy beds everything was cleaned daily and to a very high standard room towels changed every other day which is more than adequate, beach towels can be changed whenever you need, these are on a refundable deposit.
All rooms with balcony overlooking the sea and the pool.... very beautiful
All the Staff were extremely nice and very helpful and would like to say a special thankyou the ladies who looked after our room
Some people have said this is a budget hotel I Disagree......its more than that
It has a family run feel about it and this shows though as more than just budget
I would also like to thank the manager who tried to get us to a meeting with a V.I.P. you know who you are!
Overall did I enjoy the experience? Yes I did it was as good as Sandals, Southern Palms, Turtle Beach.

Would we go back again? YES we would.... in a heartbeat

The noise levels from across the road at the different bars are down to a personal thing
Personally didn't bother us

We have just returned having spent 11 nights at the South Gap hotel. This hotel is centrally located in the heart of the Gap. We only ate here once and used the hotel as a base so cannot comment on the food.

The studios are well equipped with everything you require and refrigerator is big.

The view is beautiful.. right on the ocean, bed very comfortable and room is cleaned adequately.

Yes this hotel is subjected to noise until gone 3am due to the karaoke bar across the street which has no consideration for it's neighbors and other establishments with entertainers having to compete against it. We stayed on first floor and noise level was bearable. We had read other reviews so were expecting some noise. I packed ear plugs just incase but didn't need them.

Zola on reception was particularly helpful and very friendly.

Well done South Gap, we will definitely be back.

While US$175/night may seem like a fair amount in other cities, in Barbados during high season it doesn't get you much more than a basic room which was good enough for us as we spent little time at the property.

What we got for our money was nonetheless a very comfortable bed with good pillows, caring staff, incredible views of the turquoise sea and a convenient location for getting around the island. It is also handy that the room comes with a fridge, kitchenette and utensils as food in Barbados is very expensive for mediocre quality, so it turned out to be a blessing that we were able to keep a few basics on hand and eat take out which we did quite a bit. It should also be mentioned that the cleaning staff do an excellent and thorough job.

As others have pointed out the noise at night can be a problem here so take care and ask questions when booking. There are a number of repeat guests here so evidently it isn't a problem for many people but we asked for a quiet room nonetheless. Though we ended up in a room facing the water on the same floor as reception , we could hear the karaoke playing til 2-3am. It didn't bother us (I used earplugs) but I could see how it would be a problem for others in which case you need to stay further down the Gap away from the bars/restaurants.

The hotel doesn't have a beach but guests are permitted to go through the hotel next door to access their small strip of beach, or better still the very excellent Dover Beach is just a few minutes walk away. There is a swimming pool on the terrace next to the bar which is very pleasant but I would ask the hotel to do as other properties and put up the signs asking guests not to dump their towels on a lounger and then leave it there to mark their "property".

This was the only fault at South Gap Hotel and this sort of inconsiderate behaviour was rife: an empty pool, empty bar and empty terrace yet more than half the loungers "taken" by those who had left their towels to make sure no one else used it. Since so many South Gap guests lack basic manners it is unfortunately up to the hotel to ensure that their limited number of loungers are not used up in this manner.

Room Tip: Room 115-118 facing the water are, relatively speaking, more quiet at night but you'll still hea...

Lovely hotel , wonderful staff and a view to die for.
Then 9pm arrives and you are overwhelmed by noise from the bar opposite ! It's like trying to sleep in the middle of a nightclub and this goes on till 3am EVERY morning ! After 8 nights I got moved to the 1st floor for my last 2 nights where the noise was minimal!
If you want to get to sleep before 3am ENSURE you get a room on the ground or first floor. You have been warned !
