Hi, This is a quick review of south gap hotel and st lawrence gap as we have literally just got back. Flew out on Boxing Day and arrived at the hotel just before sunset. First impressions of the hotel were that it looked a bit tired from the outside and the rooms although clean and comfortable, could have done with a refit. The beds were comfy. facilities were very good with a full size fridge/freezer, powerful shower over the bath, adequate cooking equipment and very good air con.
The view was spectacular from the balcony, the pool area was small but never very busy as most people went to the beach for the cooling breeze. Although the pool bar served drinks and food during the day it closed most nights at around 10pm.
The location of the hotel was perfect, right in the middle of the gap, just a 5 minute walk to the beach in one direction and restaurants five minutes the other. The Harlequin restaurant next door was very good if a bit expensive. We had the tenderloin steak which was excellent and perfectly cooked.
The gap was generally very quiet, especially New Years Eve which was very disppointing. We had expected a party atmosphere but apart from a few fireworks it was dead. We were informed by the hotel receptionist that the Gap has changed considerably recently due to the closure of Mcbrides live music bar which was a main attraction. The couple of nightclubs nearby were mainly frequented by locals and even the karoke bar opposite was never very busy although still very noisy till about 3am.
Dover beach is to die for, absolutely perfect. Water sports were popular especially surfing and jetski. The men that run them were polite and didn't hassle you infact all the locals were friendly.
Service was slow in bars and restaurants and most food stopped at 10pm. For a late snack the street vendors selling BBQ burgers, chicken etc were always around, the one right outside the hotel was extremely popular. The Best Burgers!!
We didn't go on any trips but felt we hadn't missed out. You can spot turtles without going on the catamerans and I would suggest taking your own snorkel and mask as we didn't see anywhere to hire them.
Our stay at South Gap was very relaxing. Great for a no frills, budget option.
