“Loved the Southern Palms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2007

Southern Palms is a well run, comfortable, colonial style hotel on Dover Beach. The location is superb - a very short walk from St Lawrence Gap and all its restaurants, as well as from Dover and its shops and restaurants. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant except for getting a hot dog with fries for my daughter on the day we left which was good and not expensive. The staff were friendly and efficient. Our suite was very spacious, with a comfortable king bed as well as a single bed in the bedroom and a Queen size sofa bed in the sitting room. There was a microwave, toaster, kettle and large fridge with freezer. The air conditioner was efficient and quiet. Our balcony looked directly over the beach and sea which was lovely. The room was cleaned and beds made every day, although the washing up was not done (but we did not expect it to be). Only clear surfaces
were cleaned so if you want it well cleaned you need to be tidy! The grounds were extremely well kept and clean. The beach in front of the hotel was virtually empty (unlike the hotels either side where the beach was fairly crowded). We stayed at the Divi next door last year in an ocean front suite (would not advise anything else there) which was fine and very cheap but we preferred the SP and it was definitely worth the extra expense. There is building work going on at the southern end of the beach which was noisy on a couple of days but far enough from the SP not to bother you too much. It rained on 2 to 3 days whilst we were there which is very unusual for March but we still got burnt - sunbathing in the cloud is very deceptive and almost more dangerous than the strong sun - any time between 11.30am and 2.30pm and you will burn even through thick cloud unless you have factor 30 on. We ate at:

Bellinis - good and not too expensive, but portions are huge so be warned about having a starter and a main.

Jumbies which used to be the Jam Rock Cafe - good for children and food good (except the hamburger which was a bit processed) and fairly
reasonable.

Harlequin which was excellent but again large portions so beware. We
split one main between two 12 year olds and it was still plenty. Slightly more expensive but worth it.

Aquapisce - we ate there last year and it was just as good this year and fairly good prices for really good food - very quiet so not the place to go for a rave.

Cafe Jungles in Dover - really excellent food but service very slow -still, a nice fun place and excellent value.

There were 4 or 5 turtles in the sea on Dover Beach the whole time we were there and you could snorkle over them in just a few feet of water which was fantastic - no need to pay for an expensive catamaran
trip. One turtle laid its eggs on the beach one night which we didn't
see but we saw the trail and the Turtle Protection man was there to mark where the eggs were laid for keep them safe.

We went up the West coast to Mullins beach for waterskiing as the sea was rough at Dover at first, but for the last 5 days or so the sea was much calmer than last year and there were watersports guys offering banana boat rides, jet skiing, windsurfing etc on the beach. Usual offers to buy aloe, jewellery and more suspect substances but a simple no thanks always suffices and they don't pester you. If you do have problems, always say you've been coming to Barbados for ages and you've got all the stuff they're selling already!

In conclusion, if you want fast, super efficient service in glitzy surroundings go to Sandy Lane. If you want to chill in a relaxed atmosphere and don't mind a bit of peeling paint and limescale on the bath then SP should do you fine.

We'll be back next year.

Just returned from a relaxing family vacation to Southern Palms Beach Hotel. Wanted to provide perspective;

Positives:

1) Good location on a beautiful beach with good swimming. Sea Turtles are clearly visible form the beach in front of the hotel. 2 pools One large and one small. Both pools cleaned daily-plenty of loungers at both pools.

2) Hotel is dated, however is well maintained with clean hotel rooms and facilities. Grounds are in good overall condition with daily maintenance.

3) Hotel Room (OF room 204) was equiped with basic needs including mini safe (3$/day fee), tv, a mini fridge and kettle. Added bonus on arrival was a bottle of Barbados rum and two Coke's.

4) Good quality and variety of food in restaurant.

5) Close proximity and easy walking distance to area restaurants and shopping.

6) Friendly hotel Staff.

Disappointments;

1) Hotel room bed was very uncomfortable -worn out and in desparate need of replacement. Was unable to get a good nights sleep.

2) Hotel Restaurant food was very over priced-good news is you can go directly across the street and pay approximately 40% less for your meal.

3) Local Beach pests-2 legged rodents selling necklaces/coconuts/aloa /boat cruises...you name it you can expect to be bothered several times each day- saying no thanks seems to send most but not all away--they don't bother you on the hotel property.

4) Could hear garbage pick up and removal at approximately 3:30am each morning-Street nosie becomes elevated Frid/Sat nights to 3 am.

Overall this hotel provides good value for the money and is in a very good location-

After seeing some poor ratings for Southern Palms, we decided to look at the positive ones and hope for the best! We were 4 adults with 2 children aged 8 and 11 years old.
We were not disappointed and just loved our stay at the Southern Palms! This is not a four star hotel, but all the basic ammenities were there! We had been to Barbados 10 years ago, and this place made our second visit just as we were going back home. The beach was ideal and the kids had a great time.
I agree that the hotel restaurant is expensive, but as recommended by other reviewers, you can go across the street to Happy Days or Latte Love for some excellent breakfast and lunches. All other meals should be enjoyed at the other great restaurants within walking distance.
Hotel staff was friendy, helpful and courteous; we met so many guests that have been returning for years and years. I now know why! And we cannot wait to go back

We just came back from two weeks in Barbados and stayed one week at the Southern Palms. This was our seventh visit to Barbados but the first time at the Southern Palms. Here are some of our feeback:

Positive:

1. Beautiful Beach. We have been to many beaches in Barbados and I would say this is the best one for swimming. You don't get pounded by the waves (like we did when we stayed at Bougainvilla). It's a good beach for kids as well.

2. Fantastic location. You can walk to many restaurants. We tried the Restaurant at Southsea (next door) and it was fantastic. It's pricey but I highly recommend it. I also recommend Josef (also in the Gap) and Acqua (new Restaurant in Hastings).

3. Good friendly staff.

4. Nice size pools with toys for kids.

5. Spacious one-bedroom suite with all amenities (large fridge and microwave)

Negative:

1. Our one-bedroom suite had a double bed and a single bed. Single bed was perfect for our daughter but double bed was terrible for my husband and I. A week is long when you can't sleep well. I am 5,7 and my feet were hanging off the bed so you can only imagine my husband who is 6,2...The Souther Palms should really consider upgrading its beds to at least Queen size beds.

2. The furnishing of the room needs upgrading. However, the positive points listed above outweigh this negative.

3. The buffet breakfast is ridiculously expensive. It's US $20.00 plus tax and service charge per person. US $50.00 for breakfast for two does not make any sense to me. We stayed at a different hotel the first week that served a similar buffet breakfast for Bajan $19.50 (tax and service charge included).

4. You get charge $3.00 per day for safe. That's nothing but with the high cost of breakfast and this added charge, I felt nickled and dimed after I had paid approx. $3,000 for a one-bedroom suite for a week.

5. No "free" umbrella on beach. There are some palm trees and everyone settles under the palm trees but they don't provide the same shade as an umbrella would. With a 2 year old, shade is appreciated. You can rent umbrellas from some kids on the beach. Again, this is something that should be provided free of charge.

Having said all of this, I would go back for the location and the beach only if Queen/King size beds are available.

My partner and I were so frazzled after Christmas and a frantic start to the new year, that we were really looking forward to our week away. Our high hopes and expectations could so easily have been disappointed - but not at Southern Palms....

The guests were a real mix of young singles, golden oldies and families - which made for a great atmosphere. And it was obvious that well over half the guests were people on second, third - or tenth visits.

We thought we'd be in a garden/pool view room - so were delighted with our sea view. The hotel was so close to the beach it WAS the beach - and the most exhausting thing we had to do in the mornings was pick which palm tree would provide our shade from the blistering midday heat. Sun beds were free - and beach towels in the hotel's signature shade of pink (!) also provided.

We'd deliberately chosen not to go all inclusive, so we could explore. And we had no hesitation in wandering around on our own. The Southern Palms was the in the nicest part of 'The Gap' with a fantastic diner opposite that we used for breakfast every day (and sometimes lunch too!) .

We were a bit astonished at some of the restaurants prices along the 'Gap', which actually made the hotel (which we'd been warned might be expensive) seem quite reasonable. but eating out is expensive in Barbados - be prepared.

Definitely no quibbles with hotel staff, service, food or rooms.
In fact I've just had a 'thank you' email from the hotel, which is also part of the service it seems once you're home.

My bloke and I are already wondering when we can go back - we might even take the teenagers this time!

Fabulous hotel right on the glorious beach. Escape at the gap and Divi Southwinds used the beach area either side and seemed rather packed together. Southern Palms beach area was really quite so you could choose your position either next to the sea or under a tree or hire an umbrella. Lots of umbrellas on the hotel terrace.
We started off in room only which was awful. The rooms vary a lot. Ours was tiny. We were lucky to be able to upgrade to a suite. This was excellent and well worth paying the extra. We were a couple of yards from the beach and in a nice quiet area of the hotel.
The restaurant and bar are very good. We did happy hour every night then either ate in the terrace bar or went out to one of the great restaurants nearby. Some bar staff were really friendly - others were quite serious.
We had mixed weather with heavy showers quite often though it didnt effect our holiday as it was always hot.
Went up the west coast where most of the beaches have dissapeared. The south is now definately the place to stay and I think our beach - Dover Beach - is one of the best.
The best trip of our stay was the Tiami. Wonderful day out and swam with the turtles - although there are turtles in the sea at Southern Palms.
Cant wait to return.

  • Liked — The space and comfort of a suite, some ocean view rooms were ok tough
  • Disliked — Room only garden view was tiny.

We have just returned from a three week vacation in Barbados, the 3rd week being spent at Southern Palms. It was by far the nicest in every way, even though the other hotels had a higher rating with Virgn Hols. Location is peaceful, beautiful beach, watersports if required by lovely, friendly non harassing guys.
We had a one bed suite, very spacious, clean and comfortable. The only thing I could advise anyone to do if you do not have the preferred view you want, is to do what the Americans do, be firm but polite, and request rather than demand. Anyone who knows "Bajans" knows that they do not respond to rude demands. As for resident cockroaches, this is to be expected in the caribbean.
The bar is nice to start off the evening, friendly staff, easy to access local restaurants etc.
All inall Ido not see howit could be faulted.
Also, good security staff. Very friendly and definately take their job seriously. Try it, but remember" Chill" its the caribbean!
