We stayed in Southern Palms from 11th - 18th March 2012. We got married there on 15th March. I could sum this place up and ALL the staff as absolutley amazing. The hotel is situated on a beautiful beach with palm trees and golden sands, step out your door to the pool then onto the beach with free beech towels, sun beds and water sports and someone always at hand to help you. We met a number of couples all had been back here many times so I think that says a lot.
The hotel is only 3 storey high and covers a large area with beautiful pink blocks of rooms with balconies looking over the sea. The room was basic but was clean and had hair dryer, iron etc. all you need for a fab holiday. We did have to pay 3US$ per night for our safe but no big deal. All charges for drinks, food etc. bought in the hotel are put to your room which means no money needed when your on the beach (just worth keeping an eye on how much your spending so you know approx. how much you bill will be). The grounds are very nice and well managed.
Our wedding was aranged by Jenni. We e-mailed her prior to going and told her we were planning to get married there. She booked the day for us, sent us the info and told us to just arrange everything on arrival which we were slightly worried about, nothing was paid till we got there. As it happens there was no need to worry, Jenni met us the first day, sat down and simply explained everything we had to do and pay, really simple. There was only two of us there so nothing to worry about, she arrange a taxi for us with Michael, a really nice guy who took us to the ministry for a certificate and waited to bring us home. Then we sat back, enjoyed our holiday, then got married. Flowers, photographer, minister, amazing setting, free cake and champagne. Out of this world. Later that evening I asked for a candle lit dinner on the beach for us..........Jenni was on it and there it was, beautiful with the steel band playing at the hotel in the background and Donna a fab waitress came out and looked after us like we were the only two people in the hotel. Everyone spoke and wished us well and a few small children ran over to give my wife flowers as we had our photo's taken on the beech.
The area around the hotel is clean and plenty of places to eat and drink. We found it safe but best just to keep your wits about you as you would anywhere in the world.
Jenni, Donna and all the staff at Southern Palms we can't thank you enough for making our stay so amazing. O and also Manty Cooper took our wedding photo's, she is a lovely person with reasonable prices and an amazing photographer, I would recomend her to anyone.
We WILL be back!!!!

Room Tip: Maybe ask for a sea view, but not sure if most are already.

Friendly, courteous and helpful .... what wonderful staff they have here at the Southern Palms
Food ... excellent both in the bar (all day) and in the Restaurant in the evenings for something just a little more special
Entertainment second to none (although you need to reserve your table on Sunday lunchtimes and Monday evenings because of the large number of visitors)
Accomodation ... first class ... we had a large balcony overlooking the beautiful beach ... this is the way to live :)
Location ... perfect ... just a stroll from bars, restaurants and shops in the Gap
Free internet access
This was our second year to visit this wonderful resort, and we were not disappointed
Roll on next year :)

We were disappointed with our stay at this resort. The location is lovely but the hotel is in dire need of an upgrade...and it seemed a little mean to pay for the use of the room safe. Our room was adequate .. a tiny shower room..and "tea and coffee facilities' are just that ..a kettle and two cups ..but no coffee or tea. Complimentary "high tea' consists of a cup of tea and a bun. We felt that staff morale wasn't very good...St Lawrence gap is a great location ..but we would certainly not recommend this hotel and we are quite amazed at reading all the positive reviews.

This was our 7 trip to Southern Palms. Rooms havn't changed in this time. Five Star Prices and third world accommodation. We will not be back. Staff are very good. Charles, Linda, Shirley, Monica, Clifford, Dale are all very pleasant and are good at their jobs. Management is a different story!!!!!!!!! Anyone in Barbados (natives or travellers) appear to be able to use to facilities (especially the main pool and lounge chairs at the pool) at any time. We paid "big" dollars to be able to enjoy the pool and sun bathe only to have outsiders take over the area each and every day. One person told us they were staying at the Divi Southwinds but they didn't like the pool at that resort so they came to Southern Palms to use the pool. Our room was clean but needs lots of tlc. Our TV was about a 15 inch. Could not read the ticker unless you were right up in front of it.

Barbados is a beautiful island and we would suggest that Southern Palms get with the program and do upgrades immediately or they will not be in business for much longer!!!!!!!

Two Canadians who will not be back to Souther Palms. February 2012

Room Tip: get a room with ocean view

I booked this hotel based on the fact that it has a gym and in some reviews stated as a Fitness Suite.A rusty bow flex, a tread machine and a 1kg and 2 kg dumb bell do not meet my requirements for a gym or fitness suite.
The hotel is in a great location, the staff incredibly friendly and the food and drinks all great but this one issue will prevent me from returning.

Room Tip: sea view is a must, the sound of the waves at night was great but watch out for mosquitoes

My wife and I just returned from our third stay at Southern Palms in St. Lawrence Gap, Barbados, West Indies. We were there Feb 11-19. The great thing about this resort is that it was built before it became customary to put up high-rises. Therefore, this resort has only three floors in most of the buildings; there is a smaller area that has five floors. The result is that there are relatively few people on the enormous beach. The white sand also extends far out into the water, very pleasant for swimmers. Right next door is Charles Watersports [--], where you can rent wave runners, Hobie Cats, body boards, and the like. This resort is consistently populated mostly by people over 50, and I would guess the average age at 65 or higher. Very few children are seen here. I am 57. Lots of people sit around and read most of the time; that's what we did. Lots of great restaurants within an easy walk or short cab ride. Champers, Waterside, Harlequin, Bellini's, and Pisces, to name a few. We only saw two panhandlers, and both are elderly, probably in their 80's. They station themselves on the sidewalk between the resort and the restaurants, but as you can imagine, they are not aggressive. Barbados is civilized and safe. Everyone speaks English. Hundreds of years of British rule set the tone for the culture. However, the roads are narrow and cars drive on the left. We always use cabs entirely, we do not rent a car. Also, we discovered that the island's restaurants are on "Caribbean-time", which means that we would arrive with reservations at 6 p.m., and leave at 8 p.m. Service is that slow at most restaurants. One of the outstanding features of this resort is the ocean-side restaurant. We enjoyed a typical American breakfast there every morning, not more than 20 yards from the surf. That was the exception to the slow-service rule. It seems that breakfast at Southern Palms didn't take long at all. They have live outdoor music at the restaurant several days a week, and free teatime every day at 4. Also a couple of nice freshwater swimming pools. Soft wonderful beds, good air conditioning, DVD player built in to large flat-screen TV. Quiet location. We both sleep great here, and my wife can't stand most hotel beds. If you want plenty of space on perhaps the nicest beach in the world, and want to just relax without feeling that you should be doing something, this is the place.

Stayed here 4 years ago and chose it this time as part of a cruise and stay holiday. We were pleased we went back. The hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. Our room was air conditioned and clean -and cleaned daily. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the freedom of eating out but equally food in the hotel was good value too especially the theme nights. The bar menu was comprehensive and was available for the evenings too if you did not want to eat in the restaurant.

Getting up, putting on a swimming costume and going straight onto the beach for a swim before breakfast is brillliant! I'd recommend it!
